Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel irc:wikimedia-commons #wikimedia-commons (direct access). Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 14:20, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

Suggestions
[edit]Hello. Thanks for all your recent uploads. Just a few helpful suggestions:
- For images from the Library and Archives Canada, please use LAC in the source field. It automatically links the image in the LAC category, and it provides a link back to the LAC website. It also saves someone else the trouble of adding it later. There are similar templates for other image sources in Canada - see the relevant subcats in Category:Image sources of Canada for information.
- One shouldn't be using PD-US, and preferably not PD-old, for Canadian historic images. Please use the more specific PD-Canada, typically paired with PD-1923 if the image was clearly published before 1923 or PD-1996 if the image was PD in Canada prior to 1996 (Commons requires that media be public domain in both the source country and the U.S.). Usage for PD-1996 is as follows: Canada
- Please try to use date categories when uploading historic images (and a date is available). If you have a precise or approximate year, use [[:Category:[year] in Ottawa]]; if you only have a decade or a wide year range [[:Category:Ottawa in the [decade]s]] is usually a good option.
- Major photographers like Topley typically have their own categories, so try to include images in the relevant subcats (e.g. Category:Photographs by William James Topley from the 1890s). Similarly, one can use William James Topley in the author field.
I hope that helps. Sorry to be a nag. Cheers, --Skeezix1000 (talk) 21:05, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
