Estrella
[edit]was Panama registered -- Haubi (talk) 22:30, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
- I wasn't sure of her number, as I found at least three old ships with that name. If you have more details, we can find her Lloyd's Register number and add the IMO number according the Miramar system. The only use is grouping the images of certain ships, so that we can create a category by name if there are more images of that ship. Thank you for your help. --Stunteltje (talk) 08:33, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
You removed Category:Parachuting and added Category:Parasailing. I have to disagree. Although it looks like paraglider (not even parasail), it is definitely special parachute for speedflying (speedriding/speedgliding/ground launch). Speedflying parachutes to evolve from hi-speed cross-braced cell parachutes, not paragliders. ~ ☭Acodered (talk) 20:52, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
- It was long ago that I was parachuting (1966 - 1973), see File:710531 Landing.jpg, and the sport is still growing. So feel free to correct mistakes. Make an extra category when needed. --Stunteltje (talk) 23:59, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Hello Stunteltje!
Is this file your own work? Are you the photographer/author of this file? If yes, please insert {{own}} as source instead of "E:\Mijn afbeeldingen\Wikipedia Gebruikt\Watertaxi".
Thanks in advance. And thank you for your contributios. --High Contrast (talk) 18:48, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
- I made these pictures on board of the Aqualiner in the harbour of Rotterdam. Changed as asked. Added Category:images by S.J. de Waard too. --Stunteltje (talk) 11:37, 12 February 2010 (UTC)
category
[edit]Why did you remove the category crane ships conserning http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hamburg-090612-0140-DSC_8237-Heros-I.jpg. There seems to be a crane on it, isn't it? --Mbdortmund (talk) 14:02, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
- No special reason, other than that i created a category for the ship on her own. That made it possible to categorise her in category:ships by name. The category:Heros I has the category:Crane ships. In due time i hope somebody will find her IMO and/or ENI number and in that case we have all her pictures categorised together. --Stunteltje (talk) 14:57, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

undercategories
[edit]can you please help me in creating undercategories, f. e. under the maincategory "Thasos", or under the undercategory "Mining in Thasos". Please by instruction! I cannot find any hint under Commons Categories. Thanks! -- Haubi (talk) 08:11, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
- Not so very difficult. Just add || Category:xxxx || to an the image, you create in this way a new daughter category. (Without the ":", this is just to show the category.) The category shows up in red, after saving. When you click on the red, new created, category opens an blanco page. Add || Category:yyyy ||, the mother category. That's all. Please read ]] and [[for ||.
- By the way: Had a lot of work to find the category Category:Ships of Panama for the ship on an immage where you deleted this. Why did you delete? --Stunteltje (talk) 09:38, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for solution of underkategorizing! I deleted after indicating names and charter places of the ships. Please another problem: Is there a chance for a proper sequence of the pictures within a category? -- Haubi (talk) 20:06, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
- I don't understand the deletion of Category:Ships of Panama as the s/s Estrella was from Panama. Found the name of the ship on another picture.
- The sequence is by alphabet. If you want to change the sequence, use |zzzzzz after the description. So the sorting sequence of File:S/S Estrelle is under the S, but with S/S Estrella|Estrella she is sorted under the E It works the same way within category names. --Stunteltje (talk) 22:24, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

question
[edit]I saw you made made some edits to Category:Lakers_(ships) I know that some people refer to freighters on the North American Great Lakes as "Lakers". But it seems to me this term is a parochial localism -- one likely to be misunderstood by those who don't live near the lakes. The Lakers sports team may be more well known outside the region than this term for lake freighters. I prefer the term "lake freighter" which is unambiguous, and can be understood without knowledge of local idiom.
I created a Category:Lake Freighter, and, IIRC, someone who was a fan of the term "lakers" stripped it of all its members, without any meaningful discussion.
Would you support a formal initiative to retire the parochial and ambiguous Category:Lakers_(ships) and formally replace it with Category:Lake Freighter or Category:Lake freighter or Category:Lake Freighters or Category:Lake freighters.
FWIW ,I think, since Africa also has a set of comparably large Great Lakes, it is parochial to refer the North American Great Lakes as the Great Lakes. I dunno how large the largest freighters on those lakes would be.
Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 15:21, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
Being just a Dutchman, I don't know the implication of your suggestion. My suggestion is to put it in Commons:Categories for discussion. All I did is making a start to devide the "Ships of" for categories with "Ships of" and the "Ships in" by category "Water transport in". A ship of the Netherlands can easily be a ship in Georgia. --Stunteltje (talk) 15:33, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
IMO number request
[edit]Hello Stunteltje!
Can you obtain the IMO numbers of those two ships: Category:Kosmonaut Yuri Gagarin and Category:Akademik Sergei Korolev? Greets, High Contrast (talk) 19:39, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
- As far as I can find:
Name: Kosmonavt Yuriy Gagarin
- IMO number: 7116286
Name: AKADEMIK KOROLEV
- IMO number: 6707301
- Call sign: UHQS
- Port of registry: Vladivostok
- Flag: Russia
Finally, most of the vessels of the Marine Space Fleet were struck off because of the disintegration of the USSR. The vessels "Kosmonavt Yuri Gagarin" and "Akademik Sergei Korolyov", registred at the sea port of Odessa, became the property of the Ukraine, and in July 1996 they were sold out as crap metal to India.

Thanks, ZooFari 15:33, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
- I myself prefer a filename for a ship that includes her IMO number for seagoing ships and ENI number for European barges, as these numbers never change and names and port of registration can differ from time to time. On the other hand, your filenames include her present name and I don't have any problem with these filenames. A hell of a lot of other filenames don't have any relation with the ship shown. That's worse. --Stunteltje (talk) 05:51, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
"Most Valued Image review" about pusher boats
[edit]Hello Stunteltje, I've seen you are interested in boats and river transport, so I take the liberty of contacting you to ask you some advice and opinion about a "Most Valued Image review" about pusher boats: Commons:Valued_image_candidates#Pusher_ships. The purpose is to select the most illustrative image among those available on Commons for this topic. If you feel like it, feel free to give your opinion on the review pages or on my talkpage; of course, you can also propose better illustrative (and geocoded) images if you know some. Best regards, --Myrabella (talk) 09:09, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
- A question in English and one in Dutch. I start with the Dutch.
- And in English: I have my own barge, but only for recreation as I couldn't afford myself a yacht. Barges end sixties in the Netherlands were sold for scrap and I bought one. Very fond of my Stella_Maris. I'll have a look at the suggested pictures. I myself made a lot of images, perhaps some are fit for your projects. Ships of Antigua
[edit]Hello, why did you remove that? What have I done wrong? Cheers,-- Darwin Ahoy! 07:40, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- Just because it was a category that doesn't work on categories by IMO number. So I moved them to the images with the ships. IMO numbers work on the hull and stay with the ship. So you don't find nationalities in the IMO categories. A ship can move from country to country. That's why. You also don't find images in the main category. Happens from time to time, no problem. I correct it when I find it. Regards, --Stunteltje (talk) 07:47, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks! Just one more question, is it OK to add the info to the cat with the ship's name? Regards, -- Darwin Ahoy! 07:56, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- More explanation. There are more than 3000 IMO number categories in Wikimedia Commons, none by registration by country. I choosed not to categorise IMO numbers by nationality, because not everybody has knowledge of this number and will understand where it stands for. These categories were created to group images per ship and from there to a category by name, when more than one image was found. It works fine this way, I was able to create a lot of categories by name. Most users look for shipnames, only relative experts of the subject for IMO numbers. To these categories by name I added the current and former nationalities, where the name stays the same. You'll find sometimes by IMO number different categories by name and in many cases these ships changed registration by country. This is how I did it so far and it works, because I find a lot of work this way done by other contributors. So in my opinion it is very good to add the country of registration to the categories by name. --Stunteltje (talk) 08:06, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks again for your explanation. If I understood it correctly, I should now remove "IMO 9373199" from the images of M/V EMS, since that cat would be redundant, right?-- Darwin Ahoy! 08:27, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- IMO categories were intended to be a tool, but they are very useful now. To be in line with the policy not to add to much categories in the tree we have to delete the IMO category from the single images, NOT from the category by name. But there are many contributers who find it useful to find an image under the IMO category, so I myself sometimes "forget" to delete every image there. --Stunteltje (talk) 08:36, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks again! Best regards, -- Darwin Ahoy! 08:49, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- It might be better to add the image to the category page itself (as to an article). That way it is clear that it is not forgotten. --LPfi (talk) 15:48, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
- Not a bad idea. --Stunteltje (talk) 18:51, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Duke of Normandy
[edit]It's the States of Jersey tug, and I notice that Category:Tugboats is categorised under both ships and boats. We always describe the Duke as the States boat, not the States ship, but then we call our ferries boats, not ships. Perhaps there's some cultural difference in use of English? Thanks for your work with the classification, though! Man vyi (talk) 15:20, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
- Might be. I am from Rotterdam, so we speak at least "Steenkolen Engels" (coal-English). It is a known problem. We also have boten (boats) we call schepen (ships) vice versa. A Dutchman calls every submarine a boat, all tugs are boats, even the biggest ferry is a boat, all steamers are boats and so on. So I use in categorising "ships" for all vessels with IMO numbers, "barges" for all vessels with ENI numbers and so on. My only problem is: consistency in all categorising is difficult. So that's why I think it is not a good idea the categorise the Duke under boats, but I understand very well why you did it.
I have another problem with the ships fron Jersey and Guernsey. And I know that it might be a political problem. (I was on Guernsey at the parliament and court and learned a few details of the legal system. England belongs to Guernsey, because William the Conqueror came from there !!) I plan to make daughters Category:Ships of Guernsey and Category:Ships of Jersey with mother Category:Ships of the Channel Islands and grandmother Category:Ships of the United Kingdom. But as not native speaker I don't know wether or not this is a good idea. Do you have an opinion on this scheme?
By the way, I made the other two pictures of the Duke, when she left the Damen Yard in Hardinxveld-Giessendam for sea and I passed with my own barge. --Stunteltje (talk) 15:47, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
- The United Kingdom, Guernsey and Jersey are three countries with separate international identities, and the "Channel Islands" isn't a country at all (it's a geographical region containing different countries, like "British Isles" or "Scandinavia"). So there's no need for anything like "Ships of the Channel Islands" (the non-geographical categories already created under Category:Channel Islands make about as much sense as Category:Ships of Benelux would, for example). Category:Ships of Guernsey and Category:Ships of Jersey should be under Category:Ships by country. Thanks! Man vyi (talk) 11:55, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
- It solves my problem, thank you very much for your clear answer. --Stunteltje (talk) 13:19, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
You moved the category to one of boats. However this is definately a ship. --Stunteltje (d) 3 août 2010 à 12:40 (CEST)
- Hi,
- thanks for your input. There are a two reasons that might explain this:
- I don't really know what the difference between a boat and a ship is because in French we tend to use the same word for both kinds of vessels.
- In the category of boats in France, we have only categories with boats so I thought it would be nice to standardize the names of the categories.
- Please let me know if you think this has to be changed, I will gladly revert my modifications. However if you think so then lots of pictures need to be recategorized and new categories will have to be created.
- Regards. /Badzil papoter 3 août 2010 à 13:19 (CEST)
- You are right. To make a clear difference between boats and ships is difficult. A working solution is: Fishing ships are able to store the fish in a hold, fishing boats in a well. Also the size differs, but there are no clear dimensions that make the difference. Only few fishing ships are made of wood these days, but in Africa huge wooden ships exist. Have a look at Category:Fishing in Belgium. There you'll find both categories, ships and boats. That is the way I did it for a lot of countries. I missed France, I presume. It wil always be a discussion, but File:Bateaux de peche Loctudy.jpg and File:Moules débarquement.jpg are ships, File:Un ligneur.JPG very difficult to say, and File:Une vedette de plaisance pour la pêche de loisir.JPG more a boat for angling than for fishing. A lot of pictures under fishing are in fact of angling. Fishing: large scale, professional. Angling: with rods, small scale, hobby, leisure. --Stunteltje (talk) 14:10, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
OK. You seem to know more than I do and I will trust your judgement. Please put this vessel in the correct category. Regards. Badzil (talk) 15:18, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Sorteren
[edit]Even een vraagje. --[[User:Stunteltje|Stuni
- Groetjes.. de reden : Een persoon benoem de filename Yamato.jpg, ander IJN_Yamato.jpg, ander Diagram-Yamato.jpg ensovoorts. {{DEFAULTSORT|Yamato}} en [[Category:Abcdef|Yamato]] sorteer al as "Yamato". Rod. Rcbutcher (talk) 07:16, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
--Stunteltje (talk) 07:23, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
- Daar is een meer probleem... "Yamato.jpg" word automatisch gesorteerd op de filename File:Yamato.jpg i.e. by "F", niet "Y". U moet {{DEFAULTSORT|Yamato}} of [[Category:Abcdef|Yamato]] gebruik as u wil "Yamato.jpg" met "IJN-Yamato" sorteer. Rcbutcher (talk) 08:32, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

Thanks
[edit]For identifying the ships! I love seeing all that added info on my watchlist :) --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 02:29, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
- You're welcome. It it is a hell of a job to find information on ships, if one didn't shoot a simple detail as IMO number or name and port of registration. I have done a lot of work on adding IMO numbers to each of the 5000 individual ships on Commons, so I have a number of sources to look at. --Stunteltje (talk) 07:26, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
Just when I looked for the ship name and a good category for it I saw that you already found it. Thanks! -- Ies (talk) 18:58, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- You're welcome. Please add the name of ships if you know them or, preferably, her IMO (seagoing ship) or ENI (inland waterways) number. Realise that every West-European barge has a ENI-number and is identified with that number. If you cannot find a name or number, also add category:ships, because I try to find these numbers for each and every ship there. --Stunteltje (talk) 19:17, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
ship naming conventions
[edit]Hi, at Commons:State Library of Queensland/Subjects we are building a mapping between a library's subject headings and our categories. For ships, we have used '<ship> (ship)'. I see Category:Cooma (ship) has been deleted as a duplicate of your Category:Cooma (ship, 1907). Should all ships be disambiguated by the year? John Vandenberg (chat) 02:29, 24 December 2010 (UTC)
- My intention was to do so, because a lot of ships have the same name. I categorised more than 3000 ships by name on Commons myself and found out that some ships were numbered without any system. On the Dutch version of Wikipedia we have the Rotterdam (IV), Rotterdam (V) and Rotterdam (VI). Examples on Commons:
- Category:Rotterdam (ship, 1908)
- Category:SS Rotterdam, according my preference: Category:Rotterdam (ship, 1959)
- Category:Rotterdam (1969), according my preference: Category:Rotterdam (ship, 1969)
- Category:MS Rotterdam, according my preference: Category:Rotterdam (ship, 1997)
That is the reason why I categorise every newly found ship in a category according this system. (I started this only a few weeks ago). I wondered how to make this a naming convention, no idea. But I found it so logical, that people will follow it automatically. --Stunteltje (talk) 08:19, 24 December 2010 (UTC)
- It seems sensible to do this, but I also have no idea about naming conventions on Commons. I've raised this at Commons_talk:State_Library_of_Queensland/Subjects#ships. --John Vandenberg (chat) 08:30, 24 December 2010 (UTC)
