Hello, Selfstudier!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Conformal Embedding.jpg

[edit]

Hi, thanks for adding this image. It was requested that an SVG file be created, so if it's ok I did so. Is it ok to use in place of the JPG? Thanks again. Maschen (talk) 23:06, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This media may be deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Pre WW1 Turkish Administrative Districts.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Jcb Sorry, I'm a bit confused now, I thought that UK gov docs are covered by OGL so that's what I put in the license box. What other info is needed besides that?95.210.109.49 22:41, 23 May 2019 (UTC)Selfstudier (talk) 22:42, 23 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You must add a license template. Jcb (talk) 22:43, 23 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
JcbUm, I think it's this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:OGL-3.0 but how do I "add" it, I used the upload wizard but it didn't ask me to add any template.Selfstudier (talk) 22:52, 23 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This is done by adding OGL3 to the image description page. Jcb (talk) 22:54, 23 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Jcb OK, I think I did it right, it shows the licnse now but the tag about the file not having enough info is still there?Selfstudier (talk) 23:05, 23 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this is how it works. I have removed the problem tag. Jcb (talk) 23:07, 23 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Jcb OK! Thank you very much for helping me, hopefully I have a better idea next time:)Selfstudier (talk) 23:10, 23 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, speaking of the image about the Allon and Drobles plans. I'm doing a GA review for the article. As far as I can tell, the image should be public domain per Template:PD-UN-doc, which says that the materials that are "official records (proceedings of conferences, verbatim and summary records, periodic supplements, compilations of resolutions, etc.)" should be in public domain. The two maps additionally appear in the original (French) version in a UN-titled document published under its logo where the UN does not assert copyright. Thoughts? Szmenderowiecki (talk) 12:07, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Szmenderowiecki: Thanks for letting me know, I changed it.Selfstudier (talk) 12:17, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

On a similar note, I noticed that all of the excellent OCHA uploads you have made have the wrong licence. They risk being deleted unless the right copyright tag is used. For most of those I would suggest Template:PD-UN-map. Onceinawhile (talk) 20:29, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Someone is removing the category for archeological sites in West Bank and moving it over to archeological sites in Samaria. There’s a discussion on the user’s talk page. Raquel Baranow (talk) 23:55, 2 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Updating an image

[edit]

I noticed File:Data on demolition and displacement in the West Bank.png could do with updating; I tried to do it myself based on the cited source but as I'm not the original uploader I don't have permission. Could you update it? It's an important graphic as it is, and the new stats would make it even more useful. Richard Nevell (talk) 20:08, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
