[edit]Please be more specific .'numerous factual errors' is too unspecific to comment.Am a final year student of medicine. And,i made the image so that all hepatitis viruses can be compared in a table. There are no errors of any kind in the image to the best of my knowledge. It has already been published after moderation by clinicians at http://medicalpics.lifehugger.com/img/hepatitis-viruses

- Discussed here. While it has some future potential, the web site you reference is not a reliable source by Wikipedia standards. --scray (talk) 04:19, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
Hi, I moved some of the stuff around in an attempt to make it clearer what each text label (Proteasome, peptides, protein) is referring to. As I am ignorant in biology, I might have messed things up. Please check and revert if I totally screw your plan up.
I have also converted the text to paths; on systems without the necessary fonts, the SVG, when viewed at a reduced size, renders blocky text. Jappalang (talk) 22:42, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
- This looks fine - thanks for improving it. I am still learning how to make Wikimedia-friendly SVGs, so your pointer about paths is helpful. Thanks again! --scray (talk) 04:37, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
fonts in SVG
[edit]So on Xth_root_of_x.svg you "changed the font" from Arial to Myriad Pro? Let's see about that....
Here's what the original had: one single instance of <g font-family="sans-serif" text-anchor="middle" font-size="20" fill="#000000">. I didn't use Arial. I specified "sans-serif" to allow the user's browser to use whatever default sans serif font it wants. I didn't (and don't) think it particularly matters what font this basic graph uses.
Here's what yours has: ten instances of <text transform="matrix(...)" font-family="'MyriadPro-Regular'" font-size="18.9202">. In the event that the user doesn't have that font, he gets a default font anyway. And he might even get a serif font, which is clearly not what you intended!
If you want to enforce a particular font, two things: 1) have a good reason for it, and 2) consider converting the text to paths so people actually see it as you intended.
Oh by the way, your new file is twice the size of the original :P. -- Jalanpalmer (talk) 17:59, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback - clearly, I have more to learn. It would have been helpful if you'd cited the image to which you're referring, but I looked back and see that it's probably File:Xth_root_of_x.svg. My primary change, as suggested by another user on the talk page for E_(mathematical_constant) on en.wiki (linked from the file page), was relocating e below the abscissa. I was simply trying to be helpful. My initial attempt using Arial did not match other uses of e so I changed to Myriad Pro. I use Adobe Illustrator CS3 (I realize many use Inkscape, but I am working with tools at hand) and (i) selected all text and used the Illustrator menus to convert fonts to paths, (ii) selected the text to ensure it appeared as paths, (iii) while saving, checked the box to convert any remaining text to paths, and (iv) while saving specifically did not check the box to "preserve Illustrator editing features" or whatever that choice is - because I've heard that Illustrator will embed a binary version of the image that bloats the file and causes mischief. Per recommendations I found here on Commons I really did intend to convert fonts to paths - my edit summary was referring to how I generated the image, not what I meant to embed. I obviously failed - and I really appreciate your letting me know. In future I'll review the SVG code more closely prior to upload. I might start using Inkscape, though I really don't need another piece of software installed on my computer... -- Scray (talk) 21:18, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
- ? I did cite the image, in the first sentence of my post. Anyway, I just thought I'd reply to let you know that I don't see anything wrong with using your favorite tools. You don't need to switch to inkscape, and you definitely don't have to be able to manually read/edit SVG. That would just be silly. -- Jalanpalmer (talk) 18:18, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 17:35, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
