Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 06:13, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Copyright violations
[edit]
Hello Rikimaru123,
You have uploaded several images that are copyright violations and you have done so despite our requests not to do so, and despite our instructions. If you do not stop uploading pictures that are not free, your account will be blocked. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Image casebook useful. Please leave me a message if you have further questions. Martin H. (talk) 21:33, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
- Please do not copy images from other websites and claim, that you are the photographer. --Martin H. (talk) 21:34, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Rikimaru123, Wikipedia is a source for free texts: All text is licensed under the GFDL, everyone can use the text for every purpose: You can take the text from Wikipedia, copy it to a book and sell the book and become a millionair as long as you fulfill the terms of the GFDL.
- The same with photos or images: Commons is a archive for free images: Everyone (not only Wikipedia) can use the photos for every purpose including money making purposes. Only the holder of copyright can permit this, so you need his written permission. He must allow everyone to use the image for every purpose under the terms of a free license without future requests for permission. In many cases it is realy hard to find an image whos author allows this, in most cases it is impossibel, but Wikipedias mission is to provide free knowledge without restrictions, so we are only accepting free images only. So illustrating an article is fine, but illustrating an article with unfree images is much worser than no image. --Martin H. (talk) 16:43, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

File:Robert-wadlow.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Your account will be renamed
[edit]Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Rikimaru123. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Rikimaru123~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
Community Liaison, Wikimedia Foundation
