Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:11, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
bird images
[edit]Hello, welcome to commons.. Please give your images a precise category : "Birds" is not precise enough. You can (and should) use the scientific name as category, such as Picus viridis. Yours, Frédéric (talk) 10:34, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
- By the way, thanks a lot for all these nice pictures. Cheers, Frédéric (talk) 10:37, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
So, how's it going? Have you been figuring out what particular contributions you want to make, and the methods? I figure first priority should be bird photograpns, building on your proven expertise. Describe your pictures more fully, add categories to those that call for more than one cat, and so forth. Or you can instead work on small articles and learn how to do infoboxes and such. Or if youy short term ambitions are very great you can study the guidelines connected to en:wp:article and get into long complex discussions in the talk pages of big articles like en:culture or en:bird about the directions in which those articles should develop, but I figure no, learning how to make improvements in the handling of your bird pictures and those of other photographers will probably keep you busy awhile. Larger projects can wait, seems to me.
Incidentally I noticed you corrected your own typo in the description of your excellent File:Least Sandpiper On Bowman's beach, sanibel Island, Florida.jpg picture, and in the edit comment said something about "foul play". What's that about? Jim.henderson (talk) 03:16, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
