Hello

thanks for your uploads

Unfortunetaly, when you uploaded pic in reference, you forgot license and by this way this one runs risk of deletion. Could you tag it with a valid license as your other pics.

Hi, thanks for the message. I'm afraid that if you get the file name wrong, all you can do is upload it again with a better name and ask that somebody delete your first try. You can tag failed attempts with speedydelete and add a short reason why it should be deleted. Thuresson 22:03, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Padraic. I think I've accidentally duplicated some of your work. I see you've already created a template for media from the Library and Archives of Canada. Alas, I had the same idea, only a couple of days later: Template:LAC-image (I modelled the template on one I had created for media from the City of Toronto Archives, Template:COTA-image That was my fault: I didn't do a thorough-enough search before creating Template:LAC-image (which adds images to the category Category:Images from the Library and Archives of Canada.

I had just begun tagging images with Template:LAC-image, so it's no big deal to retrace my steps and revert. However, I had a couple of ideas to run by you before doing so. First, I notice you've created the category Category:Media from Library and Archives Canada. I think this is a particularly good idea, because, as you point out in your edit to Category:Library and Archives Canada, media in this latter category should probably include only images of Library and Archives Canada, not media from there.

It strikes me, though, that Category:Media from Library and Archives Canada might be subcategorized into Category:Images from Library and Archives Canada, on the model of Category:Maps from the Library of Congress, Category:Images from the Library of Congress etc. That might be premature now, as the overwhelming majority of media files from Library and Archives Canada on Wikimedia Commons are images, but it might be useful to make the category as specific as possible to avoid having to go back and recategorize later when the category might become too miscellaneous and have to be forked.

Finally, if you look at Template:LAC-image, you'll note that it incorporates the urlencode feature, which allows a direct link to the bibliographic record page at Library and Archives Canada just by adding the MIKAN ID.

What do you think?

--Dutch Uncle(talk)/(On English Wikipedia) 14:05, 10 November 2007 (UTC) (or you can reach me here: w:User talk:Rrburke)

Looks great. I have a further idea which I'll try to incorporate if I can find another template to steal from that does what I have in mind: I could add toggleable parameters like type=image, type=map or whatever, which will then both display the appropriate file type on the tag and then add the file to the category Category:[file type] from Library and Archives Canada. This will allow one template to serve for all file types, rather than having to create a separate one for each with, as you point out, a cumbersome filename like "LAC-image" and so forth. --Dutch Uncle(talk)/(On English Wikipedia) 17:24, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
OK, so it now accepts parameters. If they are both blank it returns only This image is available from Library and Archives Canada . If the first is entered and the second is blank it returns This image is available from Library and Archives Canada under the reproduction reference number X. If the first is blank and the second entered it returns This image is available from Library and Archives Canada under the MIKAN ID number Y. Lastly, if they're both entered it returns This image is available from Library and Archives Canada under the reproduction reference number X and under the MIKAN ID number Y.
There ought to be a way to urlencode the reproduction reference number as well. I'll keep experimenting. --Dutch Uncle(talk)/(On English Wikipedia) 02:22, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi Padraic,
though your name is given as author of Image:MintoParkMemorial.JPG, I assume that you (only) made the image, but not the memorial itself. Could you kindly add the name of the sculptor/artist who made the memorial or at least the center stone. Also it would be interesting to have the date of creation or erection of that memorial. Thanks. -- Túrelio 14:38, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi Padraic, thanks for your efforts. I did already some online research, but did only find the year of dedication (1992) and the name of the women's group who cares for the memorial, but still no name of the sculptor. -- Túrelio 19:20, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

PD-Canada

If lack of feedback from other editors is preventing us from resolving this issue either way, perhaps the solution would be to propose the same change to the corresponding template over at the en wikipedia. Not only would we presumably get more discussion, but it would also remove one of my main objections to the change (lack of consistency with the corresponding template at en wiki). What do you think? --Skeezix1000 20:25, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Something like eight of the images in this mess are actually PD - note that some of the LAC pages say "copyright expired" rather than "restrictions on use: nil", and are governed by either crown copyright or the crazy photographs taken by corporations exception of Canadian Copyright Law - I made a list there, but I thought I'd call your attention to it. Otherwise, the rest are probably hosed. WilyD 18:58, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for letting me know this book was published! One of their assistants contacted me last year to ask about what attribution to use, but I just reminded them that I'd put the image in the public domain so they didn't need any attribution. Still it's pretty cool... I've ordered a copy from Amazon. Thanks again for letting me know!

Hello, Padraic!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Toronto Public Library

Thanks for the note! I did see that - I think there may have been a link on Torontoist or something a week or so ago. But I only skimmed it at the time, didn't bookmark it, and frankly might have forgotten completely about it had you not left that note on my talk page. It looks like they've posted more images since I was last on their Flickr page. I'm slightly annoyed that they are not completely freely licensing the public domain images -- it doesn't matter for Commons' purposes, but it is somewhat misleading to the public at large. Other than that, it's a great initiative. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 22:45, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
