Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:49, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

Categorisation
[edit]Hi and happy hols. Quick note on the OVERCAT guidelines. I note that you made a few changes to add some sub-categories directly into the parent category for Ireland. This isn't strictly necessary and doesn't follow the typical standard. For example, you placed "Writers from Ireland" in the high-level Ireland cat. This is an example of OVERCAT because that category is already a member of Category:Literature of Ireland, Category:Artists from Ireland, and Category:People of Ireland by occupation. All of which are inherit membership of the main parent cat. The top-level Ireland cat should remain relatively "clean", and doesn't need to list every possible sub-cat. (Per the OVERCAT guidelines).
Also problematic from an OVERCAT perspective is this change. It's fair enough having Category:Politicians of Ireland as a sub-cat of Category:History of Ireland. However Category:History of Ireland should not then (in turn) be a sub-cat of Category:Politicians of Ireland. This kind of "reciprocal" categorisation is unnecessary, adds-complexity, and doesn't follow the relevant standards. (Categories as not for "interlinking" related topics. They are for logically categorising topics/files in a logical/structured manner).
Hope all is clear. Guliolopez (talk) 13:55, 27 December 2010 (UTC)
- Ok fully understood, had been taking regard of OVERCATS elsewhere (I hope), and should have corrected myself in these cases. Excuse. GreetingsOsioni (talk) 11:43, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
Upload my own work snag
[edit]Guliolopez hi again, problem resolved and deleted Osioni (talk) 11:43, 28 December 2010 (UTC)Osioni (talk) 13:48, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
- forget it, I think I know why, I was using {{own} as licence rather than{{PD-self}. Osioni (talk) 12:17, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
A completely different problem has arisen. My image file gets uploaded for a while, then is rejected with the folowing notice:
Upload warning
• File name has been changed to "Heuston_Station_Plaque,_Dublin.JPG".
Please modify the file description below and try again.
The file name is identical to the file name at my PC source. Source name and destination description name are identical as above.
Its quite exasperating that after many attempts the file gets repeatedly rejected on the grounds that it was modifed, when it was not (even though this is permitted).
Is there any way of getting around this, Guliolopez ? Appreciate any tips. Osioni (talk)
- Hi. Not sure if you're still having this problem. I've never seen the above problem before, and it could be something else, but I note that you've got a comma (",") in the file name above. This could be causing a problem. Recommend that you avoid using anything other than letters and dashes in file names. Could cause problems. Guliolopez (talk) 16:20, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- This has now suddenly surprisingly uploaded, and even appears on my gallery, so hope this is a good omen. Osioni (talk) 20:22, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Blank image
[edit]A) On the [[Category:Irish National War Memorial Gardens] there is a blank image. How do I remove it please? Is my use of the "badname" template the way?
- Hi. Again, not sure if you're still having this issue, but when I view Category:Irish National War Memorial Gardens all images show OK to me. Guliolopez (talk) 16:24, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
B) Then the second image Memorial Rose-Garden 008.jpg does not show up on my Gallery. How can this be resolved? Thank you, Osioni (talk) 12:12, 28 December 2010 (UTC)Osioni (talk) 16:58, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
- Also not sure if you're still having this issue, but when I view the Toolserver gallery that image show OK to me. Perhaps it was just a delay in propogating to the toolserver service. Guliolopez (talk) 16:24, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
Files missing in my Gallery
[edit]Sorry to bother you again Guliolopez, but the following three images I uploaded do not appear on my Gallery:
Here the Gallery of my images
Appreciate if you could resolve, and how I can be sure my images appear on my Gallery (there may be others). Greetings and thanks Osioni (talk) 18:33, 1 January 2011 (UTC) + further missing image. Osioni (talk) 15:37, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- I think I have found the problem, they were not originally uploaded to the Commons by me (although I'm the originator). Am re-uploading "cleaned up" versions. Osioni (talk) 19:34, 6 January 2011 (UTC).
- That was the trick, all three are now in my Gallery. Sorry for having bothered you. Cheers. Osioni (talk) 20:04, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
Renaming file blocked
[edit]Hello Guliolopez, I still have not overcome files being blocked and rejected. The issue this time is re-naming files where the instruction under MADE A MISTAKE? above reads:
Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}
However when I first try to upload the file under a new name, it gets rejected with the following message:
Upload warning
• File name has been changed to "All-for-Ireland_League_MPs_1910.jpg".
This file is a duplicate of the following file: 618 074A.jpg
• Please modify the file description below and try again.
It is nauturally a duplicate with a new name, but request to modify file description back to the old name is completely contradictory.
How can this be overcome?? Thanks for your help.Osioni (talk) 18:17, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
- Now resolved with "Template:Rename". Great, thanks Osioni (talk) 20:13, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
Repeatedly Blocked Uploads
[edit]Hi Guliolopez, I really need a solution to the fact that all my uploads are being blocked at present because the file name is changed at source in my hard-disc file. Both Wikipedia and Wikimedia recognise this and come back with an upload warning that I need to change the renamed file description and upload again. This is unacceptable. I am not on broadband, so that after 15 minutes of uploading when I get this message back, I get totally exasperated. I have four or five images in the Commons I need to rename, and even with my new images all of which have altered file names, Wikimedia and Wikipedia reject them for that reason. Please, I need a solution to this problem. If you cannot help whom can I turn to?. I am trying to keep calm, excuse me if I sound irritated. Greetings Osioni (talk) 19:45, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
- Hi. To be honest I'm not familiar with the issue you describe. Probably best to post a note to the Commons:Help desk. A more informed user than I (or an admin) might be able to help. Guliolopez (talk) 13:17, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- FYI. I notice that your upload of File:618 074A.jpg actually worked. I might be misreading what you were trying to do. However, if you were trying to upload the high res version AND also rename the file in the same action, then that's probably not going to work.
- If that's what you wanted to do, then the best thing to do is either:
- Upload the high res version, replacing the old version. And then use Template:Rename to request that the file name be changed.
- Or, upload the high res version at the new (better) name. And then use Template:Superseded to tag the old file as being superseded by the new one.
- Hopefully I've understood the issue correctly and am not contributing to frustration levels. Guliolopez (talk) 13:25, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
Thank you Guliolopez, I actually uploaded the higer resolution version with update 23 Dec. 10, but a repeat upload with a new name was rejected. I'll try the Template:Rename proceedure which I was not aware of. Please don't forget to look at those files above missing from my Gallery. Thanks. Osioni (talk) 16:33, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- "Template:Rename" worked fine, has been renamed. Thanks for the tip. Osioni (talk) 20:10, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
Blocked uploads
[edit]Sorry to have to bother you again Guliolopez, but my last three image uploads do not appear in my gallery. Further, the Parnell image does not appear at all. It is a portrait trimmed from a larger full body painting, which I took an image of. Why should that be a problem? Thank you. Osioni (talk) 10:32, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
- two have now appeared ok, however the Parnell File:Charles Stewart Parnell in 1885.jpg image remains blank even after a fourth upload. Wonder what the reason is? Osioni (talk) 12:21, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
Just another attempt to ask if there is any reason for this upload remaining blank? Who can I turn to for help? Thank you. Osioni (talk) 18:42, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
Uploaded image remains BLANK
[edit]Msg to Help Desk copied to here: I have uploaded the image File:Charles Stewart Parnell in 1885.jpg four time. The upload gets confirmed and it is licenced correctly, but image remains BLANK,
What can the reason be. Have asked on my talk page, but get no reaction. Thank you and Greetings.Osioni (talk) 16:30, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
- I have no problem seeing it. Maybe try en:Wikipedia:Bypass your cache (Ctrl+F5) while on the image page File:Charles Stewart Parnell in 1885.jpg? --Martin H. (talk) 16:33, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
RVed deletion request
[edit]Copied from Túrelio Talk page:
Hi there Túrelio, I guess you meant it well but your RV of my request to delete File:Charles Stewart Parnell in 1885.jpg is not ok, because it genuinely does not open on my screen for some technical reason (the advise from the Desk on my Talk page did not help). I then uploaded a similar image with File:Charles Stewart Parnell, portrait 1885.jpg which opens fine (for me). Therefore please understand I do not want a blank image in my gallery. Kindly reinstate my request for speedy deletion for said reasons. Thank you for being understanding, and Greetings. Osioni (talk) 19:44, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
- Ok, I have put the now deleted original version through the jpg-optimizing function of IrfanView (a superb freeware) and uploaded it as other version to your new upload and thereafter reverted to "your" version. I did that in order 1) not to loose slightly larger image, and 2) that you could test whether the old display problem is still true for this "cleaned" version. --Túrelio (talk) 19:56, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
- Good work Túrelio, cleaned version works fine. I down-loaded it, and re-uploaded to have it re-appear in MY Gallery (it had moved to yours!). Copying all this to my Talk page. Thanks a million, Osioni (talk) 11:50, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
Personal gallery data base error
[edit]Hi Túrelio, need your help again because for quite some time I cannot access my gallery, there is a permanent data base error notification. How can this be resolved? Greetings and thank you, Osioni (talk) 10:37, 14 August 2011 (UTC) Today the link to my personal gallery doesn't respond at all. Osioni (talk) 08:54, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Osioni, I know the problem :-(. As of the last weeks there are a lot of problem like, which don't seem to go away. You might take a look at Commons:Village pump, whether there is already an entry about that and, if not, open a thread. Our coders do read that page. If that leads to nothing you might considere filing a bug report at Bugzilla, try here: Commons:Bugs. --Túrelio (talk) 09:02, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
My gallery has not functioned for weeks
[edit]Only my last upload appears, the previous 60 odd images no longer appear. The following (strange) notification appears above in bold red:
A database error has occurred Query: SELECT cl_to as cat FROM categorylinks LEFT JOIN u_daniel_cache.commonswiki_nontopics ON namespace = 14 AND title = cl_to where cl_from = 15958565 AND id IS NULL Function: getCategories Error: 1146 Table 'u_daniel_cache.commonswiki_nontopics' doesn't exist (sql-s4)
I see a similar problem was notified 7 August but I cannot relate to the solution offered. Where can I go from here please? Thank you. Osioni (talk) 10:16, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- I have the same problem, and cannot see the August 7 notification. Help help please! Mr.choppers (talk) 13:59, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- That's probably associated with a killed database server on the Toolserver, as we heard from Magnus on COM:Forum (sorry, in German). --Túrelio (talk) 14:01, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- The non-toolserver option ( http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:ListFiles/Osioni or http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:ListFiles/Mr.choppers ) almost always works when the toolserver is down. If the toolserver is showing problems for more than a few hours, then the responsible people very likely already know all about it, but may not be able to fix it immediately... AnonMoos (talk) 16:11, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- Excellent! Thanks a lot for the assistance. Mr.choppers (talk) 21:58, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
Not so excellent in my case, gallery remains down, (List File is a consolation though not the solution) Osioni (talk) 11:24, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- Would an admin edit the interface to link Special:ListFiles/Osioni as long as toolserver is down/slow? -- Docu at 12:02, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- Fixed the link. – Adrignola talk 14:22, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
