Hi, I would like to ask you about land military symbols. Are the colors that you use a common standard or they are your own invention? I mean, e.g. armoured unit - indicated pink, mechanised infantry pink circle plus green and so on. I will be really grateful if you respond to my question - piotrekm@stud.umk.pl (I need this information for scientific purpose and maybe I could ask some more questions connected with indicating army units if you were so kind)

Lo scudetto del Comalp si trova in CoA_mil_ITA_cdo_Comalp.jpg. A proposito di questo, non capisco perché alcuni altri scudetti simili (quelli della B, Pinerolo e della B. Aosta ad esempio) sono stati cancellati. Potrebbe essere cancellato anche quello del Comalp e non so se sarebbe possibile ricaricarlo. Per il materiale mancante, cercherò di recuperarlo. US 1st Infantry Division

I will do it, as soon as I know what units will made up the Div. after the ongoing reorganisation .There is no info I found about it (not on on wiki and no on the Div.s homepage). The same problem has the 1st Armored Div.- no info whatsoever about the future units... The source is a document from the US Army Center of Military History called "Unit designation in the modular force". I have it in PDF format, you may be able to find it on the internet. It does not give precisions about which AVN unit is Attack or Transport. Besides, as far as my intel is exact, all BCT in 1st ID are Heavy BCT, as in 1st AD. Keep up the good work.

US military division OrBat graphs

I noticed you placed single stars over every one of the brigades of the various Order of Battle graphs for the U.S. military divisions. For instance, the 101st Airborne Division Order of Battle graph has two stars for the Division Commander and then a single star over 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Brigade Combat Teams, 101st and 159th Aviation Brigades, and 101st Sustainment Brigade. This seems to imply that the brigades are commanded by single-star Brigadier Generals, whereas they are not; brigades in the United States Army are commanded by Colonels. Brigadier Generals serve in the posts of Assistant Division Commander, two posts, one designated "Operation" and the other "Support", but Brigadier Generals do not command tactical formations. I thought you might be interested in knowing that.--SOCL

While I have searched through various websites including those of the Bundeswehr and Heer and found some information on the organization and disposition of certain units after the transformation I have not found a source that covers the organization of every unit in the army. 3rd US Infantry Division & 25th US Infantry Division

There is no Division Fires Brigade for the 3rd ID. The unit no longer exists (1-39 FA) In the 25th ID the 1st SBCT has D Co 52 Inf as the antitank co. and the 2nd SBCT has B-52 Inf as the anti tank company. Great work by the way, very good graphics. U.S. 4th Infantry Division

Can you update the 4th ID ORBAT chart? The reconnaissance squadron for the 3rd BCT is now designated as the 4th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment (4-10 CAV), nicknamed "Black Jack". The squadron recently was "re-flagged" from 2-9 CAV to 4-10 CAV. Du irrst - die Grafik ist überkorrekt, denn es handelt sich um die neue Struktur, welche die Division mit Beginn des heurigen Jahres einnehmen wird. Als letzte Division der US-Army wird die Division heuer mit der Rückverlegung nach CONUS in diesem Fall Ft. Bliss, Texas beginnen, wo die Division innerhalb der nächsten Jahre (unterbrochen durch Irak Einsätze) - jedoch noch innerhalb 2010 - diese Struktur einnehmen wird. --Noclador 22:09, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

VDV

Good job on the organization charts! One question remains regarding the restucturing of the VDV: are the paratroops that parachute from helicopters such as the mi-8 now organic to the "air-mobile" 7th and 76th, or "airborne" 98th or 106th? It seems in the past that those who parachuted from the IL-76, parachuted from the mi-8, and those who air-assaulted, would be made up as distinct battalions within each division.Ledboots 14:51, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Slight problem with one of your Military structure diagrams

Hi Noclador, I was just looking at your very nice diagram of the Swiss Military here [3](Image:Swiss_Army.png) and I noticed that some of the sections are in French, but presumable the entire thing is supposed to be in English as it's the English Wikipedia. For instance near the top, one section is called "Region Territoriale" whereas all the other sections are called "Territorial Region", I assume that it is just a slight translation mistake, I would correct it myself if I could, but I'm not so sure of the other translations. At least 20 boxes have French names, do you think you could translate them? (BTW I don't have an account on Wiki Commons so I'll just sign with an IP address, but I am User:Hibernian[4] on the English Wikipedia, so use my talkpage there if you need to contact me). --86.42.214.209 04:01, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Organizational Diagram of the German Army

Hallo Noclador, es ist schön, dass Sie eine solch detaillierte Grafik über das deutsche Heer veröffentlichen. Leider benutzen Sie aber einige Übersetzungen von Truppenteilen, die nicht mit der englischen Terminologie übereinstimmen, die vom Bundesverteidigungsministerium festgelegt und benutzt wird. Vielleicht hätte Sie mal in die offizielle Übersetzung des Weißbuchs der Bundesregierung schauen sollen. Es ist schade, wenn sich Terminologen, Übersetzer und Militärs bemühen, für die Bundeswehr Terminologie zu etablieren und dann über ein Forum wie Wikipedia falsche Übersetzungen weit verbreitet werden.

Richtig wäre zum Beispiel:

Heeresführungskommando - German Army Forces Command Luftbewegliche Brigade - Air Maneuver Brigade Luftbewegliches Jägerregiment 1 - Air Assault Infantry Regiment Division Luftbewegliche Operationen - Airmobile Division (schon vor Jahre so festgelegt)

Auch die Übersetzung für die Division Spezielle Operationen ist umstritten. Spezielle Operationen sind nach der Definition der Bundeswehr keinesfalls mit 'special operations' gleichzusetzen. Dafür hat die Bundeswehr den Ausdruck 'Einsätze/Operationen von Spezialkräften' geprägt. Daher wäre die richtige Übersetzung 'Division for Specialized Operations' oder 'Specialized Operations Division'. Damit wird dem Missverständnis vorgebeugt, die Bundeswehr hätte eine ganze Division für 'Special Operations', was keinesfalls richtig ist. Dies geht übrigens auch aus einer Weisung des Heeresamts hervor. --Hacktranslator (talk) 11:32, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Argentina Army

Vedo che nell'organigramma dell'Esercito argentino molte unità definite Reggimento (Rgt) hanno invece il livello di comando da battaglione (due barre verticali) e non tre, come di consueto. Croatian Army

Hi, Noclador, you are doing great job with structural graphs of armed forces. I just saw thar you changed the graph of Croatian ground army. Excellent work, but you have few mistakes:

1. Presidental guard Btn, and Special operations Btn, don't fall under the army command, but directly to General Staff (and not MOD). They are so-called General staff units.
2. The Motorized guard brigade and its command is not based in Gospić, but in Knin, and Tigrovi and Gromovi are based at Petrinja, not Gospić and Benkovac. Engineer Btn is based in Sinj.
3. Tank Btn Kune will be armed with M-84D, not (at this point) M-95 (M-95D doesnt exist).

Can you make the graph for whole Croatian Armed forces (for Navy and Air Force)? The current structures of Navy and Air Force on english Wikipeda are correct. uh - that was almost a month ago - the Italian Army changes its pictures every other day,... I got it from the main page of the Army homepage, where they put sometimes links to photos/information, when something special/unusual has happened (i.e. currently there is a link to the June 2nd, Republic Day Parade); after some days these links disappear, along with the pictures. Romanian Land Forces

Hi Noclador, I was wondering if you had time to update the structure of the Romanian Land Forces at [9]. The changes would be:

DIVISION 1 "DACICA"

1. Change the 495th Inf. Battalion CLICENI from a paratrooper battalion to a regular inf. battalion (the paratrooper companies in the battalion have all been disbanded)

DIVISION 4 "GEMMINA"

2. Change the 4th Engineer Battalion "DEVA" to the "53rd Engineer Battalion "DEVA"

3. Change the "69th Mix. Art. (Ter) Brigade" to a Regiment.

4. Add to the "4th Logistics Brigade"(which now has no units under it) the following units 1) 41st Transport Battalion "Bobalna", 2) 43rd Transport Battalion "Roman I Musat" and 3) 88 Maintenance Battalion (Cluj-Napoca).

5. To the 15th Mech. Infantry Brigade, the addition of the following units (some of them are there already but without any names or with a different name like in the case of the 33rd battalion):

1. 631 Tank Battalion (Bacau)

2. Replace 33rd Battalion "Alexandru cel Bun" with 634 Mech. Inf. Battalion "Petrodava"(Piatra Neamt)

3. 635 Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion (Bacau)

4. 335 Artillery Battalion (Botosani)

5. 198 Logistics Battalion (Iasi)

RE:Addition of watermark to Divisional organization charts

Why did you add watermarks to your wonderful divisional organization charts? Among other problems (most notable that it goes against established policy, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WATERMARK#Watermarks.2C_credits.2C_and_distortions ), the watermark doesn't represent the license fully; it's a share-alike license, forcing any work incorporating WP into a similar license. I'm not writing this to insult you; you've done wonderful work with these charts, but I just wanted to alert you as to the conflict with WP policy, and see your reasoning. I get where you guys are coming from; that must be incredibly frustrating. You do, I believe, have the right to legal action here, and it may be a useful opportunity to extort some moolah out of a dying industry (publishing).

It's also a very unobtrusive watermark, one that can be removed in minutes, and that's assuming they don't check the old revisions. So I wonder if it'll really stop them. For reference, I removed the watermark from 1ID. Took all of 2 minutes, and I'm a casual user of photoshop. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/734502/1st_US_Infantry_Division.png . I suppose it does serve to prevent unknowing use without attrib, though, so it's your call/the call of the milhistory project guys.

So far, I've found en:APP-6A, which is kind of prolix but includes the necessary info,especially at en:APP-6A#Unit icons, and which I've linked in the image caption (at en:Home Front Command#Units and districts). I also found this interesting chart of WWII symbols, which was more like what I had in mind. If you know of anything better, I'd still appreciate your telling me. Reverting crops

Hi Noclador, why did you revert the cropping on images like File:Bundesarchiv Bild 101I-567-1503E-34, San Felice, Inspektion von Fallschirmtruppen.jpg? The usage of watermarks is discouraged, see {{Watermark}}. Multichill (talk) 09:27, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

Because the Deutsches Bundesarchiv (German Federal Archive) has donated these images and as far as I am aware of the agreement between Wikimedia Germany and Bundesarchiv nothing must be changed about the images! neither the images itself as uploaded nor their description, even if the description is originally from an Nazi Propaganda unit. Now to crop the images and remove the Bundesarchiv name, the inventory number, the year the photo was taken and also the photographers name... I am pretty sure that the Bundesarchiv will objects, if it would be aware, that some user came along and removed their watermarks randomly from some photos! After all this was the biggest photo donation to wiki commons and a special license was agreed upon for the use with the Bundesarchiv photos. The Bundesarchiv released the images under a free license (the {{Cc-by-sa-3.0-de}} to be exact) allowing reuse and modification this includes cropping the images. Well, lets put it this way: The Bundesarchiv has canceled the cooperation with wikimedia, because of the cropping of images on wikicommons!I was just made aware of this discussion here User talk:Bundesarchiv-B6#Reverts of Imagen clean ups, where it states "Wenn der weiße "Quellenstreifen" nicht entfernt würde" (if the white "source stripe" wouldn't be removed) as the main reason for freezing cooperation with wikicommons. Therefore actually we have to revert all cropped images to their original state! and revert any further cropping from happening. in short: We need a bot to revert ALL cropped Bundesarchiv images asap. Well, let's put it this way: If you revert another cropping, you'll get blocked.

The partnership ended because of multiple reasons, reverting the crops won't make a difference. The images are released under a free license and intended to be used on Wikipedia. For this usage the white bar is cropped up per Commons policy and practice. They'll have to live with that. Multichill (talk) 10:26, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

US 50th Infantry Division Insignia

In Thaddeus Holts 'The Deceivers: Allied Military Deception in the Second World War', the US 50th Infantry's insignia is described as:

A shield bearing a monogram of the Greek letters Delta & Gamma. No colors assigned. The US Quartermaster notes the Gamma goes first.

This bears no resemblance to the insignia you created and I was wondering firstly, what was the source you used and secondly, would you be willing to attempt the version I have discovered as a replacement.Graham1973 (talk) 12:45, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Unlikely, Holt was working off primary source documents (In this case the 50th Infantry Division files at the US Army Institute of Heraldry) and all the other US divisional insignia he describes are correct. Also the online information I've seen about the US 14th Army is just plain wrong. I have a copy of the Official Report as written by one of the officers in charge, which makes it quite clear that many of the divisions shown online as part of the 14th, while they were phantom divisions were in fact used in other theaters. It is thus conceivable that the online material is based on erroneous information. BTW I've done a number of British 'Phantom Division' articles, British 4th Airborne, British 5th Airborne & British 58th Infantry, all of which have the unit insignia described, but are lacking in graphics would you be interested in attempting to do them?Graham1973 (talk) 15:26, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

It seems strange to me that all the various online sources should be based on erroneous information. Especially as they have all other units DUI and SSI correct. As for the units that we only have a description but no actual example of their insignias: I will not do them. If I create an insignia based on how I read the description and we put it into wikipedia - this is clearly a violation of wiki policy as it amounts to original research (meaning that I take something and draw my own conclusions and put that on wikipedia). Therefore I can not help you with your request and unless you can find an example of the insignia in question from an official source I suggest you should also not attempt to create such insignia.
