Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 13:31, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

MAKS Airshow 2011
[edit]Hello Nockson!
Do you have more images of the MAKS Airshow 2011? Greetings, High Contrast (talk) 12:15, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
Hi! Yes, I have photos of mostly all aircraft from static display. I've just uploaded pics of some unusual planes. Do you need anything special? James R. Nockson (talk) 17:06, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
Well, we have a certain lack in the "category MAKS Airshow 2011" of the radars and air defence vehicles that were on display there. Do you have any photos of them? --High Contrast (talk) 21:10, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
Sad, but no. They were showing just the same stuff as two years ago (at least I thought so) so I passed by without making photos. However I will contribute with photo of Club-K missile system in few minutes. James R. Nockson (talk) 21:54, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
Bummer! But no problem. Your images are very good and I hope you will keep on contributing - not only photos from the MAKS airshow. Thank you and greetings, High Contrast (talk) 20:03, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, I surely will! James R. Nockson (talk) 13:23, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
- Heya man, do you see anything interesting in amongst Category:Photos by Ralf Manteufel? Check the template, there might be more. Also, the Yak-141 photo I will have some news on before long, I am in correspondence with Wolodymir in relation to it, and hope to have an answer over the weekend for you. Cheers, russavia (talk) 19:36, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
- Hi! Yeah, I've uploaded to my notebook 5 of his photos (one of them you've uploaded here already with An-225 and Buran). Gonna upload them here very soon. And good to hear about Wolodymir! What about other two photographers (Javier Rodriguez and Ken Videan)? James R. Nockson (talk) 20:10, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
New photos
[edit]Dunno if any of these are of interest to you, Category:Photos_by_Alexander_Mishin, but I thought of you as I am looking thru Sasha's photos. I will get unwatermarked versions of what I can in the near future. I need to make up a list of Sasha's photos which could be FP or VP, if you can see any of his pics that you think could pass these criteria, let me know and I'll have a word to him. Cheers russavia (talk) 22:14, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
- WOW! That was sudden - he's my old classmate from school times! I knew he was fan of planes but I haven't seen him in years. Heh, he's still obsessed with aviation as I do. :)
- Well, I don't see any Yakovlev VTOL aircraft photos in his collection or pics of other interested for me rare soviet planes as for example An-71. Still, he got a lot of great stuff there that surely will be used in articles. Thanks for link, gonna follow his LJ from now on!
- Ah, and sorry but what is FP and VP? Also, I write down some of photos I needed for wiki articles - you can check this list if you want. :) James R. Nockson (talk) 13:11, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
- FP and VP are Featured Photos and Valued Photos. Refer to, for example, User:Bushman787 who has already provided quite a few higher res pics for us to use and has gotten several up to those standards. Perhaps you can get some of Sergey's already uploaded photos onto articles in ruwiki? ;) I'll show him this thread, perhaps you can ask him on his talk page if there is anything you need, he may or may not be able to help. You never know. russavia (talk) 18:35, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
- Hmm, I've looked at all photos I've uploaded and these three are the finest however they're not big enough for FP:
- * MiG-29K by Leonid Faerberg
- * Dornier Do-31 by Ralf Manteufel
- * An-70 by Oleg V. Belyakov
- Can we get Hi-res versions of them? Last one is big but not enough. Especially a pic of Do 31 - it's the only photo of it in flight here. I've also wanted to promote rare Yak-36 photo to VP. Gonna try to do that soon. James R. Nockson (talk) 19:18, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
- BTW, in regards to Max Bryansky, I did approach him but he can't release his works under a licence that allows for commercial usage, even if it is restrictive. I am in semi-regular contact with Max anyway, I'll ask him about the specific photos you need. russavia (talk) 19:07, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
- Ah, that's sad - he surely has a lot of great stuff. Can he provide photos that I will upload directly to ruwiki? Most valuable are these: [1], [2] and [3]. Especially the first one. What license did he want to use? James R. Nockson (talk) 19:18, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
- And one more! Can you get this image [4] without watermark? It's by Dmitriy Pichugin. James R. Nockson (talk) 20:38, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

Aviation Wikiproject on Commons?
[edit]Hey mate, I've had an idea of starting an Aviation WikiProject on Commons. I have created a page at User talk:Russavia/Proposal where I hope that if other editors think this is a good idea, we can all come up with ideas, etc. Please keep all comments on that page for time being, and if you know of other editors on Commons or on other language projects who might be interested in commenting, coming up with ideas, etc, please let them know of the discussion. Perhaps you could let ruwiki project and editors know? Let's see if this could be a workable project. russavia (talk) 23:36, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
- I totally support your idea and just commented there! I will make an announcement on Russian WP:Aviation. James R. Nockson (talk) 11:58, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
T-50
[edit]Hi! I too thought about splitting T-50 into two, but rejected. Just two minor questions: File:Sukhoi T-50 Pichugin 2.jpg has bort no 51, but the rear radom looks like the one on the T-50-2 at MAKS 11. Did you sort tem strictly by bort no or other criteria? Do you have taken photoshopping and possible changed bort numbers into account? --Markscheider (talk) 10:52, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
- Hello! Well, I was acting mainly by numbers. But, there're some other ways to identify two first T-50s and I took them into account too. Talking about this photo - both T-50s had the same looking rear radome (just how it looks on this pic), but later T-50-1 received special upgrade (I dunno how it called in English) and its rear radome now looks different. Other way to distinguish them - T-50-2 has a little different canopy (its rear section is not divided into two pieces like on T-50-1). And I don't think that someone have photoshopped this photos, there's no reason for that. As far as I know bort numbers haven't been changed yet. James R. Nockson (talk) 15:43, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
- Comparing File:Sukhoi_T-50_Maksimov.jpg File:Sukhoi T-50 Beltyukov.jpg - there's no difference at the canopy. --Markscheider (talk) 16:33, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
- Too bad the size is small. Here, I made a rough compare pic for you: link. There's a metal thing dividing rear portion of canopy into two sections on T-50-1. On the T-50-2 the rear portion of canopy is single. James R. Nockson (talk) 16:49, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks, i think i got it now. --Markscheider (talk) 18:25, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Hello!
Can you write short descriptions for the categories you have created (for example for Category:Sukhoi Su-39)? According to COM:CAT, this is supposed to be done. Thank you! Regards, High Contrast (talk) 18:23, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

An Invite to join Aviation WikiProject
[edit]
Hi, you are cordially invited to join the Aviation WikiProject! We're a group of editors working to improve Commons' coverage of aviation. This includes aircraft, airports, airlines and other topics. |
As you have shown an interest in [[Category:Aviation photographs by author]] we thought you might like to take an interest in this new WikiProject. |
We look forward to welcoming you to the project! russavia (talk) 23:50, 5 December 2011 (UTC) |
- I have begun a discussion on airline/aircraft fleet categories at Commons_talk:WikiProject_Aviation#Airline_fleet_categories. Could you provide input there, and if possible, perhaps let projects on other wikis know, because this will assist them in finding relevant materials as well. russavia (talk) 13:49, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
- Just've responded there. As for informing Russian WP - I don't think that anyone will join the discussion soon. The problem is - we have too many material to work with and too small number of active editors. James R. Nockson (talk) 14:29, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
Hello!
By doing this edit you have removed the valid Category:MiG-29 in Moldovan service. This is not correct. Please be more careful with adding/removing categories. Thank you in advance. Greetings, High Contrast (talk) 11:18, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
- Well, I was thinking about creating category Category:MiG-29UB in Moldovan service (and same for other countries) but we have too small amount of pics related to MiG-29UB and I think that it's not necessary. James R. Nockson (talk) 11:21, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for your work on Commons. I must tell you that there are quite many Commons-users that see a problem with a too specialized category tree like variants of a vehicle in a country category-tree. There is a user that blemishd vehicle-categories that are hardly navigatable (example). --High Contrast (talk) 15:05, 25 December 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Hi, I am a Wikipedian who specialises and takes a great interest in Russian aviation history. Several weeks ago I stumbled past a photo that you've uploaded, and, given it high-quality and a certain degree of uniqueness, I decided to have a deeper look at what you are doing. What I discovered was amazing. I would like to express my appreciation for the uploads that you are performing and the trouble to which you need to go to be able to upload such great snaps. Your photos will certainly help if I wonder decide to resume my expansion of Russian military aviation articles. I would just like to know if you would be kind enough to reply to this message at en:User talk:Sp33dyphil, because I would really like to talk to you and possibly collaborate on a Russian military aviation project between the two of us. Thank you Sp33dyphil 10:50, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry for my delayed response; I haven't been on WP lately. It doesn't matter if you've taken the pictures or not, the fact that you've gone to great lengths to obtain these images demonstrate your commitment to Wikimedia Commons, and for that I thank you. There are a lot I would like to talk to you about. My mind is blank about what I'd like you to do; but, if you dont mind, I'm more often than not online at [5], so plz visit it. Be warned, your IP may be disclosed if you do not get a cloak. If you're not comfortable with that, it'll be good if you can talk to me directly on my En.WP talk page. The red exclamation marks
[edit]Hello Nockson!
I have seen that you are not yet a patroller on Commons. Because your edits are great contributions for the project, I have switched on unbureaucraticly your autopatroller-rights. Kindest regards and happy editing. --High Contrast (talk) 21:21, 21 April 2012 (UTC)
- Hi! Oh, thanks! I was wondering if patrolling exists here too. I don't see anything related to patrolling in my watchlist or anywhere. How to turn it on? James R. Nockson (talk) 21:36, 21 April 2012 (UTC)
- Autopatrol means that your edits are automatically patrolled by yourself quasi. Are you interested in patroller-rights, too? This includes that you can patrol edits of users who are neither autopatrolers nor patrolers. --High Contrast (talk) 21:43, 21 April 2012 (UTC)
- No, I just meant that I'm not able to see clearly which edits are patrolled and which are not. No exclamation marks, no yellow highlight, nothing. Maybe a glitch. Dunno if I'm capable to be patroller, but at ru-wiki I'm a patroller for half a year already. James R. Nockson (talk) 21:54, 21 April 2012 (UTC)
- By the way, could you please pay attention to this deletion request. I'm really tired of a lot of pseudofree files here. Thanks in advance! James R. Nockson (talk) 21:54, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject Aviation now on Twitter
[edit]Hi, as mentioned here, Commons:WikiProject Aviation is now on Twitter. I will be using the feed to tweet photos from our now extensive repository of aviation imagery, and will also use it for outreach activities. If you have any suggestions on how to get the maximum use out of Twitter feel free to leave suggestions on the Aviation project talk page. You can follow the account at http://www.twitter.com/commonsaviation. Cheers, russavia (talk) 14:11, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
Prototypes of aircraft has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |
