You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account. There are several tools to upload files. Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful. Made a mistake? Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it. Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

What is the name of the street in your photo of Jackson Wardm Richmond, Virginia?

I also grew up in Richmond, Virginia! I wonder if your photo was taken on l9th Street downtown, near Main Street Station! It looks a lot like the Street where my Dad grew up! He was born in Baltimore, Maryland,like my Mom, but his family moved to Richmond when he was young. His Dad was a Horse & Mule Auctioneer. My Dad's first job was standing in the Tower of Main Street Station, near his house,and announcing the arrival of the train! Later,he was Copy Boy, Sports Writer, Sports Editor, and Copy Editor of the Richmond News Leader. He was also the Amateur Softball Association Commissioner for the State of Virginia. He was very active in Richmond Sports circles, first by playing Basketball with the Rotary Boys Club Team that won 62 games in a row, and then by writing Freelance Sports Publicity for many Richmond-area Sports Organizations,and his newspaper column and articles. He died in 1981. His house and street looked a lot like the one in your picture, and it was on the National Register of Historic Places! I am just wondering--- is that his street and his house? Also,your last name is Riley. A boy named Henry Riley was in my grade at school. He had red hair and freckles. Are you related? I will be in Richmond at the end of October for the 50th Reunion of Thomas Jefferson High School's Class of 1962! It would be fun to meet you!

Your photos are excellent! I wish my camera was as good! I made a movie of Richmond in 2000, but I missed some good shots! I had to get out of the car to get really good pictures! However, we did make a video for the family!My Dad lived a block from Main Street Station.He also lived near the Edgar Allen Poe House and St. John's Church. Our 4th grade class at Westhampton School toured the area, and I knew about those places, because my Grandpa's house was there! We used to visit on weekends, look at the old Victorian Furniture in the Dining Room, sleep upstairs in the Guest Bedroom,and bathe in the tub with legs on the floor. My Uncle owned a Poultry Shop down there too, and we used to visit him and the Farmer's Market! My Aunt ran the house and cooked the meals, because my Grandma died when I was 3. (I don't remember her!) I wish I had photos of that time, but I didn't have a camera until age 10! My Mom only took photos of us at our house,or when we went swimming at Moore's Lake,or at my Cousins' house! We all lived in the West End. My Sisters and I moved away after we grew up! My Cousins still live there though, and the oldest one will be 75 in January, for which I will also come for a visit! I do have photos, however, of my Grandma sitting on the front porch in her rocking chair, and there are wrought iron columns on the porch! my Sister also took photos of the street and it may be in my video, as well! There is no brick in Arizona; they import it from Mexico! Most houses here are stucco! Southern Architecture is still the best!

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. Hi Morgan; Thanks for noticing our interests overlap. I could use help learning what is wrong with an image I uploaded. There is a notice on my commons user page and I do not know what is wrong.

I added a few categories to a couple of your images. I still am uncertain about categorization. I have been accused of over-categorization on Wikipedia and read the policies, but I just do not understand where the line is between categorization and over-categorization. I have been looking through images on commons and as I see good images in my areas of interest/expertise I look to see the quality of images in the relevant Wikipedia articles and have, in my own opinion, made good contributions to many articles just by adding existing images. Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

Dear Morgan Riley,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

• In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
• In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.

Regarding the validity of the image entitled: "File:Rees's Cyclopaedia Chappe telegraph.png"

Good afternoon, Morgan Riley!

I was led to the page on semaphore line by one of the "This Day in History" links, and clicked the image you provided, originally scanned from Rees's Cyclopaedia. I had fun following the image from letter to letter, deciphering how the pattern was constructed, and ultimately realized that the image portrays the letters "B" and "S" to be the same...

Upon retracing my steps through the pattern, I believe that the "B" is represented incompletely, and should include a similar visual construction to the other letters in its "family" (A-H): two upturned "pegs" on the same side of the "crossbar." Upon reaching this conclusion, I wanted to reference the original document you scanned from, and indeed, this could potentially be a 200-year-old "typo!"

I would love to hear what you think about this possible centuries-old misprint, and even your explanation as to why it may NOT, surprisingly, need an edit.

Category:Inverness to Kyle

Thanks for your cleanup work on these. There's also a maintenance category for them, Category:Inverness to Kyle (fixed). Thank you for pointing that out. I'd merely been working on clearing out the files in Category:British Rail Class 37 into subcategories, so I hadn't even noticed the specific Inverness to Kyle one.
