Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:04, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

File:Opera10.10.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Hi, please don't nominate a PD-textlogo for speedy deletion. Jcb (talk) 16:07, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
- Hello, I tought the logo of Verisign was not purely textual. I am wrong? If so, than I'm sorry. --MichielDMN (talk) 16:50, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
Vriendelijke groet, --MichielDMN (talk) 17:47, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Logo SKEPP
[edit]Dear,
I am the designer of this logo: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Macetaria#File:SKEPP_vzw_logo.svg I can prove this with design screenshots, a blogpost and mails from SKEPP directors.
Macetaria (talk) 10:48, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
- Dear Macetaria, I will answer in Dutch, because I suppose you speak it as well as I do - if not, I will translate the rest of my answer. [edit]This media may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Één.svg, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

- I see someone else has removed the nomination because it has the license for basic geometric forms. So I suppose nothing has to be done anymore, isn't it? --MichielDMN (talk) 08:00, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
Notification about possible deletion
[edit]Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.
If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Copyvio
Thanks. Lotje (talk) 04:50, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
M.v.g., MichielDMN (talk) 07:38, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
Vysotsky (talk) 07:45, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
M.v.g., MichielDMN (talk) 07:47, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
- Dank. Vysotsky (talk) 07:49, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
Vysotsky (talk) 07:51, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
MichielDMN (talk) 07:51, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
MichielDMN (talk) 07:53, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

[edit]Ìt may seem odd that I uploaded this video after you proposed a speedy deletion of a still. That's because it took video2commons 14 hours to upload it (so I started the process before the request.) I will of course delete this video file if the speedy deletion request is granted. Vysotsky (talk) 07:37, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
Verwijdering category
:-) Thanks. Lotje (talk) 15:43, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
- Dag Lotje. Wat bedoel je? Die categorie bestaat toch? MichielDMN (talk) 19:28, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
The Windows Media Center
[edit]Hi! I didn't really know much about what you put on my file. I got these files in the Windows Media Center app. I screenshot them in the app on my computer. Can you help me now, because I really don't want my files deleted? Ari Qasm (talk) 11:55, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- The problem is that screenshots can contain content that isn't freely available. The logo of Windows is copyrighted by Microsoft, so using it without permission is not allowed. Maybe even other items in the screenshot could be protected by copyrights.
- If screenshots would have been allowed in any circumstances, one could copy entire books, photos or even movies from a screen, but that's obviously not permitted. The same applies here.
- Let me add that these rules are the law, it are no Wikipedia or Wikimedia rules. MichielDMN (talk) 12:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
