Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel irc:wikimedia-commons #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:13, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit]May I ask you which software did you used to generate an image such as Image:SDS3_const.png? Tom Paine (talk) 13:26, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
Hi Tom: I used the open source software "WinORSA" by Pascale Tricarico Marcoaliaslama (talk) 13:48, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
Launch patches
[edit]PD-self is almost certainly the wrong license, but many or all of them should be under a specific PS-US-Gov license... AnonMoos (talk) 14:22, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
Hi AnonMoos,
I indeed was and am not sure what is the proper license. The patches are US-government in origin and hence public domain, but the photographs are all made by me (these are patches in my patch collection).Marcoaliaslama (talk) 18:35, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
Starlink train
[edit]Hello Marco, would you be willing to contribute a suitably-licenced still/video of the Starlink train? —Sladen (talk) 11:10, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
Wolfe Creek
[edit]You now have me totally mystified, as to what is on the plane route between Perth and Darwin that would have something like this in the vision out of the plane to the east in the late afternoon?
Good point, i have checked google earth, and comparing with the features of the wolf creek site, you are correct, and I was mistaken as I was looking out the window of the plane in 2017, thanks for your question... I now have no idea what it is.
Please also note when leaving messages on talk pages we leave them on the bottom of the talk page, thanks. JarrahTree (talk) 00:02, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
