Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:59, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

File:Manuel Botelho CAM FCG 2005 installation view 1.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Copyright issues
[edit]I am sorry for the nuisance of this, but although your user name is the same as the artist, Manuel Botelho, we have no way of knowing whether User:Manuelvbotelho is actually the artist Manuel Botelho. We frequently get people who open accounts in notable actors or artists names in order to upload copyrighted material.
In order to protect the artist's copyright we require that he give Commons an appropriate license to use the various images of his work that you have uploaded. Please use the procedure at Commons:OTRS for this. The e-mail should come from manuelvbotelho(at)fba.ul.pt or another address connected with the artist. E-mails from accounts at g-mail or other anonymous places will not be acceptable.
Also, I note that you uploaded File:Carlos Botelho, Lisbon, 1957.jpg after the same image was deleted as File:Carlos Botelho, 1957.jpg. This is a serious violation of Commons rules. If you believe that an image has been incorrectly deleted, you may post a request at Commons:Undeletion requests, but you may not simply upload it again with the same or a different name. It appears that the first time you uploaded it you said that it was an old photograph and the author was unknown. The second time you said it was your own work. Since the artist Manuel Botelho was age 7 in 1957, that seems unlikely. It is also a serious violation of our rules to deliberately misstate the history of an image.
Finally, I assume that there is a family connection between Carlos and Manuel. Neither Carlos Botelho (painter) nor Manuel Botelho mentions the connection. It would be a good addition to both articles if it is correct.
Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 17:04, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
- Dear James
- Yes. I am Carlos Botelho's grandson. I am an artist: Manuel Botelho. I was very close to my granfather. We lived in the same building since I was 5, and I believe I was present when the 1957 picture was taken. I can't remember too well or who else was there!:Manuelvbotelho (talk) 17:19, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
- OK, thank you for a quick reply. First, as I said above, you will need to send a license for the images of your own work to Commons using the procedure at Commons:OTRS. I know this is a nuisance, but I hope that you understand that that is the way that we confirm that you are actually the artist -- we do it to protect your copyright. If you intend to upload more images in the future, it can be a general permission:
- "This license covers all images of the work of Manuel Botelho uploaded in the past and the future by User:Manuelvbotelho."
- If you want to cover only the past uploads, then you should list them individually:
- OK, thank you for a quick reply. First, as I said above, you will need to send a license for the images of your own work to Commons using the procedure at Commons:OTRS. I know this is a nuisance, but I hope that you understand that that is the way that we confirm that you are actually the artist -- we do it to protect your copyright. If you intend to upload more images in the future, it can be a general permission:
- As for the images of your grandfather, unless you can get licenses for them from the actual photographers, we cannot keep them.
- Finally, you should clarify the author of the images of other artists that you have uploaded. Are you actually the photographer of all of these?
- Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 17:41, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
Dear James. I am the author of the photographs of my own works I uploaded. An also of Sá Nogueira (my former teacher and friend), João Abel Manta (former father in law), Abel Manta and Clementina Carneiro de Moura (my first wife's grandparents). An I certainly took the 1971 photo of my grandfather: it was actually published, during his lifetime, in one of his books and my name is mentioned - Botelho. Artistas Portugueses: Ed. S.E.I.T. (it is not a very important publication, and for that reason I didn't include it in Botelho's bibliography. In any case, there is no reaso whatsoever for you to delete this photograph. I am a serious contributer to wikipedia and wikimedia, although I'm still trying to find the right way of dealing with this highly confusing universe.Manuelvbotelho (talk) 17:49, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
- OK, so I think we will delete the 1957 photo and keep the 1971 photo of your grandfather. What about the other artists?
- As for your own artwork, the issue is not the copyright in the photos, it is the copyright in your artwork. I know it may seem silly, but our rule is that we Assume Good Faith when you say you are the photographer, but we require OTRS confirmation when we are hosting images of the copyrighted works of a notable artist.
- Finally, please reply here -- it is almost universal on Commons that we keep conversations in one place. This page is on my watch list, so that I will see anything you post here, at least for the next week or two. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 17:56, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
Yes. I am the author of all the photos of my own work. I'm writing a new e-mail, and I just hope it will solve all this.Manuelvbotelho (talk) 18:01, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
E-mail sent. Please let me know if it's ok. And please let me know why you deleted Carlos Botelho's page on wikimedia. I don't mind, but this puzzles me. Because on top of it all, there is someone else using that very same name on a wikimedia page.Manuelvbotelho (talk) 18:21, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
- I deleted Carlos Botelho, (painter), as I said in the edit comment, because it was a gallery with only a single image in it. Do I understand correctly that Carlos Botelho is not related to you?
- I must leave my desk now, so please do not expect more before tomorrow. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 18:27, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
The other Carlos Botelho born 1964 is not related to us.Manuelvbotelho (talk) 18:30, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
To avoid any further misunderstandings, I am the author of the following photographs:
- File:Carlos Botelho, 1971.jpg

- File:Rolando Sá Nogueira, c. 1977.jpg
- File:Manuel Botelho, Slow March, 2012, installation view, Laboratório das Artes, Guimarães, Portugal.jpg
I am also the author of all the works of art pictured in:
- File:Manuel Botelho CAM FCG 2005 installation view 1.jpg
- File:Manuel Botelho Inventário Inventory installation view Elvas Museum 2008.jpg
- File:Manuel Botelho, Slow March, 2012, installation view, Laboratório das Artes, Guimarães, Portugal.jpg

- I have added the appropriate OTRS reference to each of the files and closed the DRs. Thank you for your rapid response to this problem. If, as you are "still trying to find the right way of dealing with this highly confusing universe", you have more questions, please do not hesitate to ask. We appreciate it very much when notable artists license their work to Commons and would like to make it as easy as possible. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 23:33, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
A million thanks. Regarding Carlos Botelho 1957 photo, let me explain. I started taking photographs systematically around 1968; my grandfather is in many of them, but he was 69 already. I wanted his image as a younger man on the Wikipedia pages. No one knows who took the 1957 photo and it has been published time and again; for what I know, it might even be in the public domain in Portugal (?). The copyright issue is a nightmare. It is killing the Wikimedia and Wikipedia art section. Something should be done to avoid this (in the Portuguese Wikipedia they don’t even allow the fair use of images!).Manuelvbotelho (talk) 08:26, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
- I sometimes have mixed feelings about copyright, but usually come down on the side of the artist. Remember that we are careful with copyright in order to protect you, the artist. How would you like it if anyone could take a photograph of any of your works in a museum, upload it here at high resolution, and then have posters of it selling all over the world with no royalty to you or the museum and no attribution? Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 11:08, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
You are right. I know. But there might be a way to circumvent this (Fair Use seems better than nothing). You are so kind to offer your help! I have a few further questions:
- 1 - Is it possible to create a new page on my grandfather (or reopen the old one)? Can I do it? Can you?
- 2 – Since there is already a page entitled Carlos Botelho on Wikimedia (which is very confusing, and doesn’t match what happens on Wikipedia), how should I name the page so that people can find the original Carlos Botelho (1899-1982)?
- 3 – It would be very important to have images on the Carlos Botelho Wikipedia pages (particularly the Portuguese one), but this copyright problem is preventing me from doing so. What can I do? My father is nearly 89 years old knows nothing about the Internet, and this licensing business seems like Kafka to me.
Many thanks.Manuelvbotelho (talk) 12:24, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
1) First, start with a category. I have moved
- Category:Carlos Botelho to
- Category:Carlos Botelho (1964 - ), and created
- Category:Carlos Botelho (1899 - 1982).
Commons:Galleries are intended for collections of images. Policy requires at least two images on a gallery page, but generally there is little point unless there are more. For very small numbers, the category should be fine. So, I think there should probably not be a gallery page for your grandfather, at least until there are more images.
2) I have moved
and left a redirect at the old page. If and when you have enough images to create a new page Carlos Botelho (1899-1982), you can change the redirect to a disambiguation page.
3) USA copyright is like Kafka. We do not have a section in Commons:Licensing on Portuguese copyright law, but I will guess that it is simple -- it runs for 70 years after the death of the author. So, we need permission from the copyright holder for anything created by someone who died after 1941. Whoever owns the copyright to your grandfather's work must give permission for images of it on Commons. I assume that is your father. If that is correct, I think we can accept an e-mail permission, signed by your father, that comes from your e-mail address. Of course, if the work is not 2D, then we also need permission from the photographer. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 15:12, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
A MILLION THANKS.Manuelvbotelho (talk) 15:32, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
Dear James My grandfather Carlos Botelho had 2 children: José Rafael Botelho and Raquel Botelho (please check Carlos Botelho's portuguese page; my father is an architect and there is a page on him also in the Portuguese Wikipedia). Raquel died a few years ago, and Gabriel Botelho de Lima Paula, her only son, is her heir. I spoke to both of them, and they both agreed to upload 9 images of Carlos Botelho's works to Wikimedia. I just sent an e-mail with the licence to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, and I hope it is the right licence (I'm still highly confused about this licensing business; I'll never understand how to deal with it properly). Now I´ll wait for your ok to upload the images. If there is anything else I need to do please let me know. I don´t want any trouble with my grandfather's work (it means too much to me).Manuelvbotelho (talk) 12:55, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Great. I've read the e-mails and they are good. For clarity, please use the following file names (the same names as in the e-mails):
- File:Carlos Botelho, Com Carnavais como este, Ecos da Semana, 17 Fevereiro 1938.jpg
- File:Carlos Botelho, Ecos da Semana - Em Paris, Maio 1929.jpg
- File:Carlos Botelho, Lisboa - Lisbon, 1962.jpg
- File:Carlos Botelho, Lisbon - Lisboa, 1936.jpg
- File:Carlos Botelho, Lisbon - S Cristóvão, 1937.jpg
- File:Carlos Botelho, Lisbon Bouquet - Ramalhete de Lisboa, 1935.jpg
- File:Carlos Botelho, My Father, 1937.jpg
- File:Carlos Botelho, Nocturnal - New York, 1940.jpg
- File:Carlos Botelho, Velho Casario, 1958.jpg
and put "see below" in the permission line and "OTRS tickets:2012022010005609, 2012022010004824" anywhere below. Be sure to put them all in Category:Carlos Botelho (1899 - 1982). You can also put them all in Carlos Botelho (1899 - 1982) with appropriate captions.
Drop a note here, and I'll put the appropriate OTRS template on them. It's possible that between your uploading them and my being back at my desk, someone will hang a "no permission" tag -- don't worry about it. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 14:24, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Jim. I uploaded the 1st image but I must have done something wrong for in the second I can't see the uploaded image. Here is what I´ve done. 1) I clicked "The copyright owner published this work with the right ..." and "Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0". 2) Below "another reason not mentioned above", I Wrote "OTRS tickets:2012022010005609, 2012022010004824". I'm very confused, and I fear I won't be able to do this right. HELP! Please!Manuelvbotelho (talk) 15:25, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
- I haven't done many uploads in the last two years and the process has changed a little, so I can't be very helpful. Try simply uploading them as "own work" with the licenses CC-BY-SA and GFDL and then after you're done, let me know. Once they're on Commons, I can deal with the exact way to show the licensing. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 16:39, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
I keep forgetting to log in. I realised later I could keep doing it the way I did it before; I'd rather do that then upload the images as my own work (this might be easier but somehow I just can't do it). Now that you are around I'll try to upload everything and I'll be in touch as soon as its done. Hope all goes well. Manuelvbotelho (talk) 17:00, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Dear Jim. I've done it. But the page layout isn't right and I have no idea how to fix it. And it is necessary to create the disambiguation page, so that Carlos Botelho (1899-1982) doesn't get confused with anyone else. Can you help? I hope everything is ok. Looking forward to hearing from you.Manuelvbotelho (talk) 17:44, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
I think I solved almost everything, but finding the new page remains a bit tricky and confusing. And there is a disturbing notice in the discussion page - Carlos Botelho (painter) - relating to the deletion of the 1971 photo. Can it be removed? I'm having a new text translated so that Botelho'e English page is as complete and well written as the portuguese one. I really want to do a proper job. And again, many thanks for your precious help. Without it I would be completly lost.Manuelvbotelho (talk) 18:29, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
I have:
- corrected both DAB pages: Carlos Botelho and Category:Carlos Botelho
- corrected the name of the cat from Category:Carlos Botelho (1899 - 1982) to Category:Carlos Botelho (1899-1982), removing two spaces, fixing my own mistake.
- removed the DR message from Talk:Carlos Botelho (painter) -- you could have done that, since it covered a DR that was closed as keep.
- added the Commons media template to Carlos Botelho (painter)
- changed the references in Carlos Botelho (painter) to conform to wiki usage, which makes it easier to add more. The citations are not in strict wiki style, but I was not sure whether we were citing books or journals, see Template:Cite Book and Template:Cite journal.
I don't understand "But the page layout isn't right" -- which page? What do you want to do? Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 00:23, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
The page layout is fine; all you've done seems PERFECT to me! I'm really happy. Yesterday I uploaded 7 images and this morning one more, from the approved list of 9 - File:Carlos Botelho, Lisbon Bouquet - Ramalhete de Lisboa, 1935.jpg. When I make my mind perhaps I'll upload the last one - if I do that I'll let you know immediately. Thanks for the tip about how to make the notes according to wiki usage. I'll try to adapt. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks!Manuelvbotelho (talk) 07:44, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Hello Manuel, and thank you for uploading the paintings by Alvarez Dominguez. Please note though that the "date" parameter in the description template is for the original date/year of creation of any artwork, not for the date of uploading to Commons. Cropping images
[edit]By way of information for the future, when you want to crop an image I suggest you use the CropTool that can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appears in the left side of your screen. It saves everyone a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, licence, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa. That way all the proper information is there and does not need to be manually reviewed by volunteers. You did not add a source to 3 images, so I had to tag them individually, you then added sources, but did not leave a backlink in either the crop or the original, and you also changed one of the licences to something different from the original, so they needed to be reviewed again. I've now re-reviewed them and all has been fixed, but I hope you can see how both of us could have saved a lot of time and frustration in the first place. Good luck. - A million thanks for your help. I still find this somehow confusing! Most of the time I make several changes to the images, some very subtle (not just cropping but also lens corrections, contrast, and so on), and this makes it all more difficult. Sorry for all the trouble.Manuelvbotelho (talk) 16:22, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
- No problem, there are many ways to do some thing and some are way more efficient than other and take a while to learn or find out about. If you are doing some retouching, you can consider making the crop first and then upload a new version adding a filled in Retouched template with details of what you did (click on the template link to see how to use it). If not cropping, just overwrite the original image but add the "retouched" template, especially if the work is minor. Ww2censor (talk) 16:30, 27 February 2017 (UTC)

Imagens do Políptico da Sé de Évora
[edit]Olá! Suponho que pode ler em português. Desculpe estar a maçar. Desculpe a impertinência.Saudações! GualdimG (talk) 19:01, 31 March 2017 (UTC)
Saudações, GualdimG (talk) 15:59, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

Tríptico da Igreja Nossa Senhora Pópulo Caldas da Rainha
[edit]Boa tarde Manuelvbotelho!

- The photograph in this book cover (File:Carlos Silveira 1995 2.jpg) is my work; I uploaded it in Wikimedia and used it in Carlos Silveira's page in Portuuguese Wikipedia (in the book cover a symmetrical version was used, but the photo is the same); this is the reason why the book cover's photograph has been uploaded as my own work and I can see no reason for this image to be deleted.Manuelvbotelho (talk) 12:42, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
- Dear Les; actually, although I am the author of the photo, the copyright of the book belongs to "Ordem dos Farmacêuticos" (I just looked it up). I could easily get their permission since I provided all the book's images, but I can't waste any more time with this unimportant question. So, please apply the rules. Greetings.Manuelvbotelho (talk) 13:30, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
