Imagecopy on speed

I implemented threading and this speeds the bot up *a lot*. Please test drive it! Multichill (talk) 16:44, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

File put over another file

Someone has uploaded one file over another file at File:Female Loten's Sunbird.jpg. I would be grateful if you would repair it. Snowmanradio (talk) 20:05, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

✓ Done --MGA73 (talk) 19:36, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
The single egg seems to be from same source as the 4 eggs (and therefore also PD) so I do not think we need to delete that. --MGA73 (talk) 22:34, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

This image cannot be kept from my read of your interaction with the author...is this right. Maybe its better if you file a DR here then since its just used on 1 wiki page sadly. Goodbye, --Leoboudv (talk) 00:07, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

What do you think? Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 10:25, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

User did give a permission to cc-by-3.0. But also changed the license on panoramio to cc-by-nc-nd-3.0 and that is the only reason I made that extra comment. The user did not respond (like "No, then it is not ok") so I think that the user do not mind that the image is now free. So my plan was to wait a few weeks (could be on hollyday) to be sure that user has read the note before I passed or started a DR. --MGA73 (talk) 15:10, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
  • OK. I won't do anything but please note that other users here could nominate the file for deletion based on the conversation on the panoramio link. Nard has been doing this recently. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:03, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
I know and they are welcome to do so :-) And I think we should nominate all images soon if they do not have a good permission. --MGA73 (talk) 19:07, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:09, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

  • Thanks for your help on the first image. There is some communication between the uploader and the copyright owner but the photo was not used anyway. There was no reason to keep it, I thought. Best regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 00:14, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah the 2 other files was deleted before I read your notice so it was easy :-) Anyway the category is soon empty. Great! --MGA73 (talk) 07:04, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Michael, my name is Milton Beychok and my email address is mbeychok@cox.net. I am an Editor on the Citizendium online encyclopedia. We would very much like to use your photo of a Russian Blue cat in one of our articles. However, our policy only allows us to use images from Commons (or Flickr) if we can determine the real name of the author so that we can properly credit him/her as the author.

Would you please be so kind as to email me your real name?

Thanking you in advance, I am

Milton Beychok

Wow, really? So you're not allowed to credit artists by the name they wish; everyone on Citizendium - even the people not on Citizendium - have to use their real name? Adam Cuerden (talk) 04:23, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
If we accept a pseudonym claiming to be the author of an image and he/she is not the author, then the real author might sue Citizendium for not crediting him/her as the author of the image. To protect ourselves from that possibility, remote as it may be, our policy is that we must obtain the real name of the author for images we obtain from Commons, Flickr and similar sources. I am sure that most image authors would prefer that we attribute the image to his/her real name.
Milton Beychok
And why are you asking MGA73 this? He's clearly not the author of File:Russian Blue 001.gif. Multichill (talk) 11:07, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Nope, that is not my photo :-) --MGA73 (talk) 15:03, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
The file history indicates that MGA73 redirected the File:Syt300.gif to the File:Russian Blue 001.gif and I assumed that MGA73 was the author of File:Syt300.gif. Evidently, my assumption was incorrect. Can anyone tell me who was the original author of the photo and how I might contact him/her ? I would really appreciate the help.
Milton Beychok
The author is User:Ruskis. You could obtain her real name from her official website or facebook page linked from her userpage in de-wiki. Better to ask her if she is ok to be attributed under her real name, attribution not in the way the author wants (i.e. under a real name instead of pseudonym) not only is not very fair to the author, but also could violate moral rights in some jurisdictions. Trycatch (talk) 20:37, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Thank you, Trycatch, for being so helpful. I do appreciate it.
Milton Beychok.

Dear MGA,

You should ask another Admin (anyone you trust?) to close this DR you nominated as delete on July 25. I told the person who failed the image to make a response....if he could. Luckily he could. The image cannot be kept and the DR is more than 14 days old now. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:30, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Dear MGA, I have a confession to make. In 2008, I did upload 1 and only 1 copy vio. to Commons. I just remembered it here. I was sad that there were no objects on A. Egypt in Canada at the time. Please delete it:

I did take these images in an Egyptian exhibition near where I live in 2008 and they are my photos but the photo of the Egyptian bracelet above was taken from a book and is a copy vio. I did not upload any other copy vios. Since then I never uploaded any other copy vios and all the photos on my userpage were taken from a museum at UBC where I graduated. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:28, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Only the version you uploaded or the whole file? --MGA73 (talk) 19:43, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
✓ Done No problem :-) --MGA73 (talk) 20:03, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi MGA73, do you happen to have a script to regenerate the subcats of Category:Caerphilly County Borough? Also see Commons:Batch_uploading/Geograph#Conwy. Multichill (talk) 14:58, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

I found something but it is not complete. --MGA73 (talk) 15:54, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

This DR

Would you wish to make your opinion known in this DR. Personally, I think I gave a good reason to delete. The uploader was new. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:14, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

  • PS: If you have some time, please try to mark some of the many images in the picasa review needed category. I marked 30+ images here but the section still has over 80 images remaining. That's too much for me. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 20:17, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
I asked Dcoetzee to start the bot - lets hope that works :-) --MGA73 (talk) 20:47, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
  • OK. Normally, there is only 4-10 or maybe 15 images to mark on picasa. But then a few days ago, I saw the category had 126 images...mostly from 2 different uploaders. I thought that Lupo or Die Buche would mark a few but maybe they are away. At any rate, I cannot mark this many. If you want, plesae mark a few like 10 or 15 images. But a bot would help...a lot. On the DR above, I doubt anyone can expect a newbie to know what license is OK and what is not sadly. Best regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 01:29, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
I closed the DR.
As for the review I reviewed 30-40 images a few days ago in I think it was the panoramio category. I think that sometimes a user finds some good pictures and upload a lot and then nothing happens for a few days and them there is a lot of images again. If the bot is not started very soon I'll review some. Reviewers should focus on the images the bot(s) can not fix so it would be nice if the bot runs regular. --MGA73 (talk) 08:23, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
  • Today I'm busy so I don't know if I can review many but I see the count at picasa review is 130+ images now. At this rate, DCoetzee is welcome to create a bot sadly. I had brought the number down to 80+ yesterday. That is too much. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:35, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
He has a bot. Just needs to "run" :-) --MGA73 (talk) 20:05, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
  • I hope he will let it run. As an aside, what do you propose to do with the license for this image below? The uploader was once warned by Polarlys to stop uploading copyvios but he has uploaded many other images since and I don't see anyone questioning them. Polarlys is not very active here nowadays. If this is not a copy vio, the license must be 'fixed' as it is wrong. This is not 2D art. Its 3D art.
  • File:Forgotten Empire Exhibition, (Room 5).1.JPG

Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 05:47, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

There is no source so a nsd is normally what we do. But it is robably own work - same camera as here. If we asume it is own work the problem is that we do not know if uploader wanted the image to be PD-self or GFDL+CC. Too bad it was not found right after upload. Well, I really do not know what to do here... Start a DR as no source and bad license and let others comment perhaps? --MGA73 (talk) 06:38, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

I was thinking maybe type in pd-self here since the author has done this for a few of his images. As for panoramio images from the 'Claudiofsc' account, I doubt that any can be kept. I haven't seen any typed permission anywhere for any of them. It may be best to create a DR on them. The uploader seems to be away. --Leoboudv (talk) 18:58, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

  •  Comment: Is it worth the risk to E-mail the copyright owner to get a license permission (say CC BY or CC BY SA) for this image: File:Arnold potts statue kojonup.jpg? He gives his contact address. Maybe he does not know how to change the license or what they mean. Many people on flickr have told me that it is easier to upload images than to change a license. But I have no panoramio account anyway...and I would be a stranger to him unlike you. If you contact him about the photo, it would not really be a cold call since he knows the photo is here on WikiCommons/Wikipedia. But he can see that I failed the image since the license is 'All Rights Reserved.' I leave it in your hands to decide. Its your call. If you want to protect you privacy, perhaps its best to send macjeffrey a second panoramio mail though he may/may not reply. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 05:15, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
For this and the other remaining photos we have a permission - it is just not very good. But I would like to wait a few weeks more to see if we can get a better permission. After that we need to decide what to do with the images one by one (case by case). --MGA73 (talk) 09:47, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
  • That's OK. A few wiki Admins and one major Commons contributor in Toronto have my E-mail address but I trust them and they trust me not to 'shop' their E-mail address around to spam web sites. But in this case, no one knows anything about the copyright owner. I just thought it was an idea. Best regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 20:30, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Do you want to mark some of the 17 images here in panoramio review? I have to deal with the 55-60 in picasa review? Its only 17 images...and I don't understand why some images files here are blank. Just an idea. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 08:59, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Yes I will have a look later - it is easier when you can see what is on the image :-D There should be a text in the top saying "There is currently a problem with the creation of thumbnails, and some may not appear at all. Please sit tight, do not remove the images from articles, and hopefully the technical wizards will get it fixed soon.". That is the reason for the blank files. --MGA73 (talk) 11:26, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
File:Aishgrnd1.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Avista_Stadium.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Avista_Stadium.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

This DR

Some strange things happened in the past at Commons like in this DR which High Contrast suggested I file. I, too, was thinking of filing a DR here but that would mean Commons cannot trust the original reviewer who passed the photo. But in this case, filing the DR was correct in my view since the original photo is still on the flickr link...and was never deleted. This is getting creepy. --Leoboudv (talk) 02:54, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Dear Michael,

Why was not this image OTRS'ed? Was the permission lost in one of the periodic Commmon's blackouts in the past? (where permission messages got lost) This is an image of an important Star Trek personality. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:31, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

  • As an aside, maybe you should delete this image. The uploader seems to have typed in a possibly false OTRS ticket...I think. This is the uploader's only image here and the resolution is supertiny. But maybe you can check. I doubt this needs to go to a DR since it is the uploader's only photo here.
  • File:Thebh.jpg

Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 08:25, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi! There was a permission with a list of images. This one was not mentioned in the list but in the text below the list so I think OTRS-voulenteer missed it. I deleted the small one. It claimed own work but it was unused and had a bad description so I doubt it would ever be used. --MGA73 (talk) 16:06, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

From you closing rationale: The proper way to nominate images for deletion is adding a template on the photo and notify the uploader. That was not done in this case! Therefore these files are not deleted. I did notify the uploader and I did tag the photo. Or did you mean the other ones? Even so, a copyvio is a copyvio and should be deleted regardless of if the uploader was notified. I'm not saying these are copyvios but if they were that would be a terrible reason to keep them. Anyway, are you going to delete the previous version, the one with unblurred text, the one I nominated? Rocket000 (talk) 19:25, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

Yes this file was properly tagged. I meant the other ones that was added later. The reason I did not notify uploader etc. about these is that I'm not convinced that they are copyvios. I think they were drawn into this DR by the uploader of the first file as an attemp to save the file. As for the previous version I did not think that it was a big problem because it was just a part of the "history" but now that you ask I'll delete it. --MGA73 (talk) 20:07, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
Ok, thanks! Rocket000 (talk)

Is taking a photo of a company's actual product and posting it on Commons a copyright violation? I think it may be (that is what MBisanz once indirectly told me though I am rarely in contact with him today). If so, this should be tagged as a copyvio and deleted ASAP. I've seen this uncatalogued image 6-7 times already but I don't know the rules here. But maybe you known the solution. This is a straight on shot and De Minimis does not apply. What do you think? The uploader left Commons in 2008 it appears. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 01:28, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

  • Secondly, Michael, I have an Emergency request: Can you ask your bot to order flickr reviews to images uploaded by this User here He uploads many flickr images and does not order flickrreviews. I marked 2-3 images but its 11:45 PM in Canada and I have to leave soon. Please ask your bot to order the the flickr reviews soon before someone changes the license. Help. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:48, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

It is ok to show a package if there is nothing or very little that is creative work. Text and simple chapes etc. are ok to show. In this case it is mostly text.

I will make my bot ask for Flickrreview. --MGA73 (talk) 17:39, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

Yeah I know that the quality is not good. But it seems that 3 famous people was together - that might be special. --MGA73 (talk) 19:13, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

  • File:Bebe12.jpg

Yep. Cleaning up is a very good idea. Problem is that if images are not categorized then it is hard for users to find them and use them. The reason I did not nuke was that the three persons was famous. I do not know how many pictures we have of these three persons. --MGA73 (talk) 19:20, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

Final photos

These is my final batch of tagged photos--tagged 1-2 or more days ago. Please check them if they have not been deleted. If you agree that they are CSD candidates, please delete them. If not keep them. There are just too many vanity and unnotable images here sadly...or the single upload photo only.

I honestly cannot say here who is the real original photographer. Both images are perfect duplicates and yet one cannot be the original and one is the original picture. The original picture should be categorised and used like the other image that has the proper cats. Maybe you can check which image was the original one...and delete the derivative copy. For one of this photos must be a copy of the other. Either the person here 'stole' this photo from wikipedia and uploaded it as his/her own to Commons or else Snowmanradio accidentally transferred an image that was already on wikipedia to Commons but did not know that the uploader on wiki was not the real author. But Snowmanradio is a good uploader and wouldn't intentionally make errors. So...as I said, there are 2 images and I have no idea who is the real author. One of this images is a fake. (just kidding!) Hope you can help.

  • I thought you just type in the 'save' button for the cat and it is created. But nothing happened. It was the same for Dirk Benedict's category here: Benedict acted in the A Team and BSG (1980). Aqueduct

I left a message some time ago here to an uploader about an aqueduct and he made a response. According to his wiki talkpage, he is somekind of reviewer. You can tell him the problem if you wish. Have done what I can as I have no panoramio account....but he's not very active this September. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 01:59, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

Does Commons need to keep this orphaned image or is there a scope for it? I ask this question because this uploader's talkpage is totally full of deleted image warnings. The resolution is also low. --Leoboudv (talk) 02:12, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
