User talk:Leifern
Hello - thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects - this is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should either place the images on topic pages (galleries), or put the images directly into a category, or do both. Which of those possibilities is preferred is however a matter of debate, see here.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now, see Commons:Really unused. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do! Thank you. -- Duesentrieb 00:53, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Lister over gårder i Oppland (Lists of farms in Oppland)
[edit]Articles which parallel a Norwegian Wikipeda series on Lists of farms in Oppland have been proposed for deletion; the Norwegian series is no: Kategori:Lister over gårder i Oppland. I believe that such material has both historical and genealogical value, but as always will support the position of the Wikimajority. If you have an opinion for or against deletion, I’d appreciate your commentary on en:Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lists of farms in Oppland. You’re welcome either in favor or against deletion. Image Tagging Image:Johan_Gunder_Adler.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Johan_Gunder_Adler.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-3.0 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Hello Leif,
Having lived in the Galillee for many years, the picture Image:Qiryat Shemona Israel 1978.jpg that you took 30 years ago looked a bit strange to me. After checking carefully and cosulting with my parents (who still live there), I came to the conclusions detailed in Image talk:Qiryat Shemona Israel 1978.jpg.
Please turn the image and reload it with the correct details. If you need more information, I'll be glad to provide. Amnon s 19:43, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Amnon - I've flipped the picture. What would you suggest that we call the image? I should probably try to delete the one that's there, as it's misleading. Thanks for the correction - I relied on notes that I took all those years ago. I'll take the blame, but it could be that the guide misled me as well. :-) I really liked the Galilee - got a strange idea I'd live there one day. When I came back to volunteer at a kibbutz the year after, I ended up at Palmachim. Before they cleaned up the beach. --Leif 21:09, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- I think it should be named after the main components: Hula Valley and Mount Hermon. However, Hatzor Haglilit is quite apparent too, so the image can be listed also in Category:Hatzor Haglilit (I'm not sure this one exists yet), and added to the relevant article. I guess the description of the picture should include as many details as possible - you can use my description from the image talk.
- Since it is used by several other wikipedias under their "Kiryat Shmona" articles, I suppose we should make some announcement regarding the change. If you wish, I can do this once you move the image to it's new name.
- I'm working now on the Hula Valley article in Hebrew (which surprisingly did not exist until 2 months ago), and I am going to use this picture - it's beautiful. I'm glad you liked the Galilee - do come again! For any assistance do not hesitate to contact me. Amnon s 16:37, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
- It looks like I have to delete the image and upload it with a new name. And that apparently requires administrative action. Of course it's possible to keep the name but have it refer to something else, but that's just too obtuse for me. I'll request the deletion tonight when I'm home. Glad you like the picture - another one I took on the same trip is Image:Israeli soldiers and Arabs .jpg. --Leif 17:26, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:02, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Missing licensing information
[edit]Hi Leifern! A file you have uploaded, File:Golani Brigade insignia.jpg, is missing licensing information, and I have tagged it accordingly. I believe it's a copyvio anyway, but if you can find a place which permanently displays this image, please make sure to add the licensing information :) Thanks, Ynhockey (talk) 11:06, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
Copyright status: Image:Jeger kompani.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading Image:Jeger kompani.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Please help replace this outdated license
[edit]Hello!
Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.
The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.
Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

Use of picture in historical journal
[edit]Hi, the article East end and West end in Oslo (Norwegian bokmål version) will be printed in Oslo Museum's journal Byminner this autumn. Here I would like to use your picture File:Diversity of youth in Oslo Norway.jpg, as I have done for the wikipedia article. Would you like to be credited in the journal? If so, Leifern or Leif Knutsen? best wishes, Helge Høifødt (talk) 19:02, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
- Sure, and thanks for asking. "Leif Knutsen" is fine. Can you let me know when it's out?
- I will, sometimes before Christmas. Helge Høifødt (talk) 20:08, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
