Welcome!
[edit]Welcome!
Hello, Lar, and welcome to Wikimedia Commons. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
- First steps
- Babel guide - Commons is truly international, here's how to handle some multilingual issues
- Commons FAQ - has some answers to common Commons questions
- The Community Portal - has plenty more helpful links
I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Commoner! If you haven't already done so, you might also want to open an account on a Wikipedia in your preferred language, or one of the other Wikimedia projects. By the way, please be sure to sign your name on Talk and vote pages using four tildes (~~~~) to produce your name and the current date, or three tildes (~~~) for just your name. If you have any questions, drop a note on the village pump, the help desk, or ask me on my Talk page.

CheckUser
[edit]Hi Lar,
Per the CheckUser Policy, I have been granted the checkuser permission. Thankyou for supporting this request. Requests for checkuser can be made at the Administrators' noticeboard. Thanks, Alphax (talk) 01:24, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
Re: thanks
[edit]No problem. I think CommonsDelinker will go well. Here's to a sweet thing.
And thanks for the lovely flower. :) --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:40, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
No, it is not too late
[edit]Hey, thanks for the welcome. I was wishing that someone would give me one of those, better to get that one than one of the other templates you're working on. And about those, it is nice to see you refining experience and things such as templates from en:. May the problems not move over here though, that's one of the reasons I'm here, it is quieter, not as much vandalism and commotion. See ya around, DVD R W 02:56, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hear you about the quiet.. part of why I'm here too! ++Lar: t/c 03:01, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
Some template questions
[edit]Hi again Lar, I created this template en:Template:Architecture_SI to use with the architecture portal, en:WP:ARCH. When the images are images at the Commons, though I can leave it on the file in en: space, it seems to me to be better to place them over here and I've been doing this lately. Should I link the page on the Commons to the en: template as I've done already or re-create the template here? Can I just create a template here, just like that? Is the markup the same? Would it go at Template:Architecture SI? Thanks, DVD R W 03:39, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
- Well, I'm new around here myself and certainly no expert. So asking on the Village Pump might be a good idea. But my take is that this template is a talk page template, and specific to the en:wp. That is, it has little or no signficiance to, say, de:wp, they may not even have an architecture portal or if they do, don't have a portal specific featured image process. Can you give an example image that comes from commons that was selected, I want to check how things work (I think http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Image:Millennium_Dome.jpg is an example), but my understanding technically is that the image description comes over from commons, but I don't think the talk page does. This image has a blank talk page on commons, or did till I created one. Since the template would be placed on the talk page?? it wouldn't come over anyway I don't think.
- contrast that with, say http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:CedarPoint_EastView_DSCN9499.JPG which points to http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:CedarPoint_EastView_DSCN9499.JPG. All the templates placed on the commons image page come over to en. But you still can edit the en page and add more stuff, it goes below what gets shown from commons. Were you thinking you'd place the portal notice on the image page rather than the talk page? That might work. But again, I don' tthink other wikis necessarily care about en. That's why asking on the pump is a good idea. I hope this was of some use though. ++Lar: t/c 09:12, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hi DVDRW,
- I strongly agree with Lar that this is an enwp-specific process that is not relevant for Commons (and all the other wikis that use Commons).
- Look at w:Image:Sahara satellite.jpg for example compared to Image:Sahara satellite.jpg. This image is a featured picture on enwp - but not on commons. The FP and POTD templates go on the enwp page only.
- cheers, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:53, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the replies, and after reading them I realize I probably should have been putting these templates on the image pages rather than the discussion pages to begin with. I just put them on the talks because that is where those templates go for articles. Putting them on the image pages is a good way to go around making a new template here, which you two don't seem to think is a good idea.
- Though selected images at portals are an enwp process-- I would like to know of other similar processes from other wikis, and would like to read or see what they have written, featured, and selected in the areas I'm interested in. So from the perspective of the reader, I think we should have these kind of templates here, mostly to draw readers into different local wikis. Concerning the author or uploader of the image, however, suppose they don't use en: (or substitute local wiki) but use the Commons-- they might want to know that this kind of recognition is being granted on a local wiki.
- The format for the template is now a little severe (it is the same clipboard image and format as is used for AfD reminders) so I'm trying to get some help re-designing it so that it is more obviously an award.
- Anyway, that's what I think about this. I might bring it up at the VP, but it is not really pressing. Thanks for your time, regards, DVD R W 15:59, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
Image deletion warning | Image:Mumbleimage.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

Ack! did NOT mean to nom this, was just testing quickdelete.js ++Lar: t/c 18:12, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
- In User:Lar/monobook.js, somewhere after you include MediaWiki:Quick-delete.js, insert the following:
nfd_autosave = false; mnx_autosave = false;
- Or, you could put them in User:Lar/switches.js and include that somewhere after Quick-delete. Alphax (talk) 11:01, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! So set now. I guess I don't have to hack after all. ++Lar: t/c 12:17, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
South Tyrol Images
[edit]redacted to Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/Attention#PLEASE_HELP and answered there. ++Lar: t/c 16:38, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
Lar, my dispute on English wiki is done. The only thing that is spilling over is that Gryffndor doesn't want to respect my requests here and keeps reverting my image and removing the deletion request (and trying to report me on Commons, threatening to 'block' my user status and to 'lock' the image for 'protection'). I have put in the proper requests to delete two images:
I would like to replace these with:
This satisfies the proper name with the germanic alternate name included. Please note I am not trying to bring this argument over here, I am actually trying to update my image and improve the quality and accuracy of my image on Commons (which happens to be linked to articles in the English wiki). I understand my actions, and while I have tried to apologize at times, it doesn't seem as if Gryffndor is being held accountable for his bullying actions either. I just want to delete those two images and to leave the third (properly titled) image. Thank you! Rarelibra 16:54, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- I'd really like to talk about this in only one place. I will see it if you post where you were posting, it's on my watch list. Answered at Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/Attention#PLEASE_HELP, and please keep further discussion there. Thanks ++Lar: t/c 19:12, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
Lar - I want to start by apologizing for all of this. In reality, there should have been a very easy way to compromise and negotiate neutrality of some sort. So I am, from here on out, done. I cannot waste any more effort and resource on this, because it is quite obviously going to remain one-sided. Gryffndor went and locked the image, so we cannot make edits or updates to it - even if a consensus agrees on the naming convention of the provinces (which, they have an agreement of naming it "Bolzano", not "Bozen"). So to let you know, you won't see me anywhere near this mess again. I apologize again, and hope you are understanding. I don't want to deal with such abuses of power and POV again. Rarelibra 13:37, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
- You're a valuable contributor, I'd advocate you let this lie for a while and come back... remember eventually we'll be farther along than we are. Meanwhile there is no rush. I just admonished you on the main thread, but the advice bears repeating, pleaes remain calm. There are a lot of other maps that need creating, a lot of other images you could contribute, maybe take a break from this and do something else for a while? All the best and happy editing. ++Lar: t/c 13:41, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Etiquetando imagen Image:Mumbleimage.svg
[edit]
Gracias. Alphax (talk) 14:59, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

your offer
[edit]Thank you for offering to mediate on the Wikipedia about the Trentino-South Tyrol issue. However the tone of the discussion by two users (Taalo, Rarelibra) has become so heated, I am not particularly interested in participating in such a mediation, you can just take a look at the talk pages [1] where other users such as Markussep and Olessi have voiced their dismay at the tone of voice. I guess I could participate in the mediation, but trust me it would just bring in another torrent of verbal abuses and hysterical reactions from Taalo and Rarelibra, I am not quite sure that would be in the best interest. Unless you want to convince me otherwise... cheers. Gryffindor 08:44, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
- Ya after offering I haven't actaully started because there's a lot to do to make it work. I'll take your conditional acceptance as an accept though. :) Hope that I can help keep things collegial. ++Lar: t/c 10:40, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
- I hope so too. I don't understand what is so difficult to understand under "Use English" in the English Wikipedia, but I'll keep an eye on that discussion. Congratulations belatedly from my part for becoming a sysop :-) If you need help or assistance in any admin. issues, feel free to drop a line, I'll see what I can do. Gryffindor 13:53, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
Hey Lar, what do you think about this? Why didn't you tell me about it before? Do I have to go back and add it to all my uploads that qualify? Sorry for questions, DVD R W 00:42, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
- Cool. I hadn't seen this license, didn't know it existed! I don't have it on mine, I don't think. I expect once AWB works here easily, changing all your uploads that qualify would be quite easy. See COM:VP for more detail on AWB I think. (or mabye just here: AWB for commons I haven't tried it here myself but this would be a good test for me, to tag mine this way using AWB. ++Lar: t/c 01:44, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
Heinrich Himmler
[edit]Hello !
I would like to know about these pictures:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Himmler45.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Himmler_visits_Dachau_1936.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:HimmlerOberfhr.jpg
can go on the comons. I saw on the englsih wikipedia that they are in the PD so i thought they can. I alredy put one http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Himmler_visits_Dachau_19361.jpg beacuse I did not know somebpdy deleted that picture. Just tell if I can put the other two and tell me if the first one will be deleted. Sorry if I caused any trouble by putting the Dachau one. --Edgar Allan Poe 09:30, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hi! Not all info from the NARA is PD. If you put these on commons you need to give a specific link to the exact page in the archives that the image comes from, so that the license can be validated for that specific image. For example consider this image from w:HAER Image:HAER_WaldoHancock_03_320291pv.jpg. I gave the URL to exactly where the image came from and the URL to the caption page that gave information about it. If you do that, we can evaluate the copyright. These seem extremely important historic images to have, regardless of the subject matter. Hope that helps. If this is not adequately covered in our FAQ please let me know. ++Lar: t/c 11:40, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
a boo
[edit]Can you take a boo at the question dogears asked here User_talk:Dogears#Galleries_and_categories? What is a "boo" anyways? DVD R W 20:18, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hey, let's talk on IRC because I'm not totally sure what's being asked. thanks! ++Lar: t/c 01:14, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
POTD Poll
[edit]I noticed you opposed the POTD Poll because you were not convinced we have enough images that qualify. Please look at these [2][3][4][5], these are just 4 months worth of Quality Images and most have not been POTD. New Quality Images are promoted at a rate of about 30 per month. Quality Images combined with Featured Pictures means we have more than enough for each month without reusing. --Digon3 13:18, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
- According to this, we have 605 Featured pictures (I still dont know how many of those were POTD). According to this, we have 148 (37x4) Quality Images. In all, we have 753 FP or QI. I am probably wrong somehow, but that is what it looks like to me. --Digon3 14:05, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
