Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:54, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

File tagging File:Kul ratna tuladhar.jpg
[edit]This media was probably deleted.

Thanks for uploading File:Kul ratna tuladhar.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Kul ratna tuladhar.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

File:Siddhidas_amatya_stamp.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

- The photo is out of copyright due to age as per Nepal law, and the appropriate tag has been inserted. This file was created from freely available source. Karrattul (talk) 18:03, 17 April 2014 (UTC)
- You're claiming that you created the photo yourself. If it was created in 1915, then that does not seem very likely. You need to provide truthful authorship information and a verifiable source, so that others can confirm that the PD tag is appropriate. —LX (talk, contribs) 10:21, 18 April 2014 (UTC)
- I did not create the photo, it was created in 1915 as you have rightly mentioned. I just created the jpg file from the image. Since the image was photographed in 1915, it is out of copyright as per Nepalese law, which says that copyright expires 25 years after the photo was created. I am unable to provide authorship information as the photo was created almost a hundred years ago. Karrattul (talk) 14:42, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

I've moved the deletion discussion from speedy to deletion nomination because I want to let the administrators who are good on non-U.S. copyrights loose on the problem. Please go to the "entry page" as linked above and make your comments that you made here on your talk page? Thank you so much. BTW, where did you find the image? Was it in a book, online or a loose photo print? Was it at a Library? Just a clue to where it came from please, and also state that in the entry page on the Deletion Nomination. The Licensing issues on Commons are very complicated, but this is all just a process - not any kind of a value judgement. Please help us out here with the source location (book, library, picture, etc). and make comment and we'll see what the big guys say, ok? Ellin Beltz (talk) 18:54, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

- According to Nepalese law, a photographic work becomes out of copyright 25 years after creation, see http://www.tepc.gov.np/uploads/files/11the-copyright-act66.pdf (page 11). Old out-of-copyright photos of Nepal can be found all over the internet. However, if the uploaded image does not satisfy wiki copyright and source rules, it should be deleted. Karrattul (talk) 16:36, 27 April 2014 (UTC)
- Very well, I'll explain the problem to you one more time. You're claiming that you created the photo yourself ("Source: Own work" and "Author: Karrattul). If it was created in 1930, then that does not seem very likely. You need to provide truthful authorship information and a verifiable source, so that others can confirm that the PD tag is appropriate.
- "Source" means where you got the photo from. Presumably, you didn't create it yourself, so where did you get it? Does that source confirm that the photograph was first published more than 25 years ago (keeping in mind that publication could occur long after creation) in Nepal (keeping in mind that first publication could take place in a different country from where it was created)? If the source does not confirm those things, on what basis are you making those assertions?
- "Author" means the person who created the photo. Presumably, you didn't create it yourself, so who did?
