Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 12:04, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Actor's Workshop 52-65.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Actor's Workshop 52-65.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Hi KFFOWLER, your user name suggests that you may be "Keith Franklin Fowler". If that is indeed the case, I find it somewhat questionable that the two portraits you have uploaded were shot by yourself as per your claim "author=KFFOWLER". If they were shot by somebody else you need 1) to put his/her name into the author field and 2) provide his/her written permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. --Túrelio (talk) 08:20, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Ellin Beltz (talk) 05:21, 10 July 2016 (UTC) : My wife has now filed a release for this photo of me taken on our visit to Kronborg Castle in Denmark. We have several other photos of me (an old actor who has had the privilege of playing both Hamlet and the Ghost several times) in various rooms and stairwells of the "HAMLET castle," but I doubt we will bother posting them. We wish Wikimedia could be more trusting when it comes to ownership matters, but the red tape (which BTW might be easily faked) is discouraging. Thank you. KFFOWLER (talk)

He has just finished helping this aging body climb the last few steep steps, and I tipped him (rather generously) for the aid. He then offered to shoot the picture. He made it clear (as I understood in my poor Spanish) that my previous tip covered this service (as I witnessed him performing for other guests). No one on the scene thought to pull out photo release forms for signatures, as there was no doubt about ownership at the time.

Hi Keith:
Please look in the box directly above this note and see where it says "at its entry"... that's a link which will take you to the entry at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Baby Llama.jpg. The links work the same for all the above notification boxes.
Leave messages directly on the page to which you are directed, you can start your section with a :colon followed by your statement. For example for baby llama (based on your email) you could say something like "I didn't remember I uploaded two of them, it's ok to delete the small one."
The image file name is linked and the headline of the section, and each box explains the general situation (no permission, no license, listed for discussion, and so on), then gives a link or links to more information as applicable. If you hover over the links, you can see where each one is taking you before you actually click! After a while the repeats to COM:L also known as "licensing" or "copyright" page and the COM:OTRS, volunteers who help determine ownership and permissions in difficult cases and also to COM:UNDEL are recognizable because really those are the three main places we send people for help regarding deletions.
For general learning how to use the system, please see the pastel boxes at the very top of your talk page which contain links to tutorials, general information and help. Yes, there is also "email the user" available to you (and I know you found that one ), so please look in that same area and see that it is divided in 3 parts, the top is community based, the middle is participatory, and the bottom relates to the individual user or file displayed on the page at that time. In addition across the top are View, Edit, Add topic, History, Heart, Watch star, More and Search.
Need to change something?
Use the [Edit] button.
Right click the picture and use "open in new tab" to see it larger.
To see all the changes to the file or page, use the [History] button.I hope this tiny tutorial helps and I look forward to practicing here with you, just click "edit" above and scroll down below this paragraph, put in your :colon to show it's another speaker and to indent your words so they show clearly. Then when you're done, just sign your name with four tildes ~~~~ and it automatically signs and dates for you.
Cheers!! Ellin Beltz (talk) 18:31, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
P.S. here's a handy banner for your page

Thanks for uploading File:"Journey's End".jpg.
Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:"Journey's End".jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.Yours sincerely, - FitIndia Talk ✉ 07:56, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

File:BSonIWO.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)
