Hi, There was an article circulating a while back, early 2017, claiming that three municipalities in Tamaulipas had legalized same-sex marriage. updated SSM map

Hi Jedi,

A couple questions on your edits -

• if Costa Rica is gold, shouldn't Panama be as well?
• why has the recognition color been removed from Estonia?
• should Cambodia be striped, since only occurs in a small minority of communes?
• not sure what we should do w NCyprus.

Yes, sorry, my mistake! I'll go and change Panama, Estonia and Cambodia. EU legislation does not apply to Northern Cyprus, so it should be left as it is now. (See Northern Cyprus and the European Union) As for Chile and Greece, yes, I realised the stripping didn't match the other countries, but unfortunately I couldn't find the reason as to why. Yeah, it is. When there's no label, I usually just change the colouring of the path and then open the document again to see what changed; in this case, which country changed colour. I then know which country that particular path applies to (and then I can label it). It's a bit silly, I know, but I'm not sure there's any other way. Jedi Friend (talk) 13:03, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Not silly, just the best you can do, I suppose. (Instead of opening it, couldn't you leave it open and hit refresh?) Some maps are labeled, but I generated this one with Inkscape. I'd take a look at the striping if you'd labeled those countries, but I probably wouldn't be any help even if I did, and I don't have a lot of time to spend on it. Thanks for labeling the map. That must've been a pain.

Okay, the border stroke width for both Chile and Greece (also Russia) is ~0.25, whereas most the other countries are either 0.8063 (e.g. Ecuador, Mexico, Croatia, Italy, Estonia) or 0.9567 (e.g. Hungary, Poland, Czechia, Slovenia). I believe that they were drawn at different scales, then Croatia etc. were enlarged about 20%, and Chile etc. about 380% to compensate. That's why the border widths needed to be different, because the borders are enlarged by the same amount. The striping would need to be adjusted by the same ratios to match. Now that I know to look, I can see that the stripes don't line up across the Croatian–Hungarian border, though the 20% difference isn't too noticeable.

Chile and Greece share the following values:

    transform="matrix(3.8268456,0,0,3.8268452,-69.123194,-1131.2708)">

whereas Italy, Croatia and Ecuador are all:

    transform="matrix(1.1864773,0,0,1.1864771,-38.896804,-45.509184)">

If you swap the values, Chile and Greece are displaced toward the upper left of the map, but are also shrunk to about a third their proper size so that their stripes now match those of the other countries. I suspect our choices are to either remap all the countries at the same scale (which would be fine if we could automate it), or to fudge the map by creating different pattern widths for the 0.25-border countries. (IMO the difference between e.g. Croatia and Hungary isn't enough to bother with.)

updates to world SSM map

Hi,

I removed the CU/grey striping from the EU cuz states w CUs already recognize SSM for residency purposes (they just treat them like CUs, which allow for spousal residency). I think there may be one exception -- I forget which country, but in one of them CUs aren't much like marriage -- but the only difference in that case would be to make for more CU rights, which isn't something we bother to distinguish on the map. (One of our sources does -- strong CUs vs weak CUs -- but that's a judgement call and in many cases we don't have enough info to decide for ourselves.)

Anyway, there are some other changes I'd like to ask you for, since I'm not sure how to do them w/o wrecking the coding improvements you've made.

There should be dark-blue rings in Ecuador, Mindanao and maybe a few other places. (Every non-SSM state in Mexico, but that would make the map illegible.)

Slovakia and Hong Kong should probably be striped w light grey, since the recognition in both is so very very limited. You seem to be be good at that.

This doesn't mean that same-sex marriage has been legalised in the state. The Supreme Court granted an "amparo" (an injunction) to some couples so that they can get married, but not all same-sex couples are covered. Other same-sex marriage maps

Hey, do you think maps like File:Same-sex marriage map Europe detailed.svg and File:Same-sex marriage map Europe (without bans).svg, and maybe even File:World laws pertaining to homosexual relationships and expression.svg, should also include 'limited recognition' categories instead of 'unregistered cohabitation'? Do you think you could update those maps when you have time? Also what do you think about adding Latvia? It was added by a user not too long ago. I removed it, but someone reverted me seemingly without even reading my description as they just repeated what was said before. Other countries were never added until they either showed evidence of providing residency right, stated to do so or had rulings of their own like Lithuania. SSM map

Hi Jedi,

You don't seem to have read my reasons for reverting on the talk page. I don't see any evidence in the edit summaries, just unsupported claims. The foreign-rec color you keep changing was settled by consensus on the talk page,, you can change the other maps to match if you like. I like the redefinition of light blue and removing the striping from E.Europe and China, but I was hoping for evidence of the other changes before doing that. World SSM map

Hey Jedi. Do you think adding a new map might actually make sense? It doesn't seem like the user who uploaded the map is willing to accept certain changes. After looking at the history of the old version of the map it seems like there were other concerns users previously had against his changes, but he dismissed them as the creator of the file. I don't think it makes much sense to continue arguing only to be dismissed. The last version of the map before his new changes - [1] - looks very different and were followed by a long edit-war with multiple users. A new map can feature similar stylistic consistency with other SSM maps and can be called something like "Global Same-sex marriage map"/"Global Same-sex unions map" or "World Same-sex marriage map" or something of such sort. The user is suggesting to do so himself and I'm not sure but I don't think Commons forbids creators from dictating how to edit their files, so he may be right and it might be useful. Hey. Yeah, I agree with you that he'll continue to dismiss the edits. I'm not sure if creating a new map will help though, because he'll probably just dismiss the changes there too. But I'll be happy to create one anyway. The user published the map under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license, which allows anyone to edit, modify or adapt the file, so in no way can he dictate how the file should be edited. Yes, create you own map and stop disrupting the existing one. If there's an actual error, please let us know, but edit-warring over color patterns is silly. User issues

Hey Jedi. Just as you have predicted Kwamikagami continues to revert the map you uploaded in favour of his own. There is a clear consensus on Talk:Same-sex marriage to use your map, so I find it very hard to see how his behaviour is okay by Wikipedia standards. I've reverted per consensus again, and I hope he cooperates, but if he doesn't I'm not sure what to do next. I'm relatively new to Wikipedia, so I really don't know what to do in these situations. I'm very surprised. I checked and it seems you're right, Liechtenstein is listed as having adoption on the map. Though, I must say I'm not convinced. I live quite close to Liechtenstein, and it's the first I hear of it. Jedi Friend (talk) 16:30, 30 April 2019 (UTC)

According to the official government page on adoption, married couples and single people may adopt. There's no mention of registered partners. It also uses gender-specific language, e.g. "adoptive father" and "adoptive mother".

As for Croatia, I believe it has a similar institution to stepchild adoptions, known as "parent-guardianship". Though, I'm unclear on the specifics of what that means or if there is a difference. Jedi Friend (talk) 16:35, 30 April 2019 (UTC)

Yeah, I wasn't so sure with just those two, but the additional one at talk seemed to clinch it. I suspect part of the problem might've been distinguishing what "Oaxaca" refers to. It would be a good idea to keep our eyes open, though. Kwamikagami (talk)

BTW, I just put your duplicate world SSM map on my TV screen, and the light blue colors are much more distinct than they are on my laptop or PC monitor -- though still not enough to tell that Israel is striped rather than solid except at full resolution. (The striping shows up for purple+light blue at half res.) And of course the viewing angle isn't as crucial on a TV as on a laptop. Since you were someone who helped update the file File:Countries_banning_conversion_therapy.svg in the past, I was wondering if you could help update it since the state of Colorado has now banned it as of 31 May 2019 (two days after Maine). Colorado would need to be blue (instead of only having a blue dot at Denver). w:en:Conversion therapy uses this image, but it's not been updated yet. Thanks! The cited source for the article https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_donation_restrictions_on_men_who_have_sex_with_men is also incorrect for Hungary (and I suspect for other countries too :( ).

There is no longer a reason for keeping the internal borders of the UK anymore, after same-sex marriage became legal in Northern Ireland, just like in the rest of the UK.

Hello. Thank you for your reply. I also wrote the same request to User:Kwamikagami, who suggested that it is not necessary anymore to work on the UK, because it will be removed from all current EU maps, because it will leave the EU next month. When I requested an edit on the UK in the map, just days before the elections, Brexit was still an uncertainty. Hence, why I wrote to you. I was thinking about Brexit and whether to ask about editing the UK at all on current EU maps. But I wasn't sure until the election results. @Jedi Friend: Late reply. The colors for the map need to be changed as the Bostock ruling confirms anti-employment discrimination pertaining with sexual orientation and gender identity in public employment now. @Jedi Friend: But there's also housing and public accommodation that are addressed in some ordinances in many communities in Ohio. The map can't be frozen in time prior to Bostock as more communities address anti-discrimination in the sphere of housing, medical, and public accommodations. I was wondering if you could please add Louisville, KY, Rochester, MN, and Kenosha, WI, onto the map? Louisville is joined together with Jefferson County so the entire county should be filled and Rochester is just a city in Olmsted County as well as Kenosha in Kenosha County. However, could you maybe change the aforesaid file and include India as a country that forbids firing of employees on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity in employment too? When it comes to gender identity, the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights), 2019 forbids discrimination in employment on both public and private sphere. And when it comes to sexual orientation, the Allahabad High Court in it's 2021 judgement ruled that people cannot be fired for their sexual orientation.The High Court said sexual orientation is a private matter of a person and is protected by the right to privacy. Adding Robbinsdale, MN, Lincoln, NE, & Lexington, KY to map of US states banning conversion therapy for minors

Hello Jedi Friend, Thank you so so much for your work on the "List of U.S. jurisdictions banning conversion therapy" Wiki page! I was wondering if you could please add Robbinsdale, MN, Lincoln, NE, & Lexington, KY onto the map? Lexington is conterminous/joined together with Fayette County so the entire county should be filled and Robbinsdale is just a city in Hennepin County just west of Minneapolis as well as Lincoln in Lancaster County. Work cut out for you

Hi, Jedi Friend. I've been updating the article w:List of U.S. jurisdictions banning conversion therapy, and assuming that's what you're going off of (and last updated the image May 13 based on), there have been a few updates to the article since then.

1) A ruling by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in late 2020 has overturned bans in Florida, Georgia (none yet exist), and Alabama (none yet exist). Whether you wish to show this on the map (say, with orange) is your call.

2) The following cities/towns have been added since May 13:

• Sun Prairie, Wisconsin
• Columbia, South Carolina
• Bloomington, Minnesota
• Scranton, Pennsylvania
• Royal Oak, Michigan
• Madison Heights, Michigan
• Lawrence, Kansas

I really have no idea how to edit these maps, so I came to you for help, since you seem to be a pro at this sort of thing. TheTechnician27 (talk) 03:57, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

Yeah, I'll probably ask on the talk page. I used an orange color (#ffb069) in the table to signify these municipalities and counties, so we'll see if people like that. Meanwhile, having done a bit more research, there are a couple small updates if you feel like mapping them. The first is that I added Middletown Township, Bucks County, PA (distinct from Newtown Township, Bucks County), and the second is that I removed Rochester, MN, as what they passed was a resolution opposing the practice, not an actual ban. Hey, Jedi Friend. Since June, the w:list of U.S. jurisdictions banning conversion therapy has expanded out by six municipalities, namely Norman, OK; North Kansas City, MO; Charleston, WV; Ann Arbor, MI; Prairie Village, KS; and Morgantown, WV. I was hoping you could fill these in on the map. If I were you, I wouldn't fill in Minnesota on the map, since the Trevor Project treats it differently too. Request for a map (1993 New Zealand electoral reform referendum)

Kia ora Jedi Friend, I've just created a page called w:1993 New Zealand electoral reform referendum, about the change to MMP in 1993. I saw you did a map for the w:2020 New Zealand euthanasia referendum. Any chance you could do one for the 1993 referendum too? I would try myself, but I'm lost already. I think you should be able to find an svg map of the 1993 electoral boundaries to start with.
