cover book J.J. Ras
[edit]You removed an image of the front cover of the book "De schending van Soebadra" by J.J. Ras. I uploaded this picture years ago. I could do that because J.J. Ras is my father. Could you please put it back in its place? Thank you very much 83.160.26.221 20:52, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Old Post Cards
[edit]I see you been moving items out of Category:Old postcards of the United States to Postcards in state and State in the decade categories. Is the "old' category going away? I'm asking because most the "old" items left in that category are ones that I uploaded, and there is another person who reverted one back to the "old" category. I didn't see a mention of category move/project underway. Please enlighten us. Parkerdr 04:26, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hi. My edits were made in the interest of recategorizing in a way I thought more useful; if you disagree or wish to put a category I removed back, please tell me or just put the category back. I don't know any specific policy about the "old" category going away, but it is my impression that "old postcards" has been tending towards depreciation. I note that Category:Old postcards has had a category redirect to Category:Postcards since June, and if I remember correctly some "old postcards" categories for other countries were merged a while ago. However, if you think there is a good case for having an "old postcards" group of categories, please discuss. Perhaps Category talk:Postcards would be a good place for discussion about categorizing postcard images, and we could ask some other editors who make postcard contributions to comment as well. Thanks, -- Infrogmation 06:07, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Category:Car parks in the United States
[edit]I saw that you created Category:Car parks in the United States, and thanks! One thing, though: since "parking lot" is generally used in the USA, rather than "car park", do you think that it would be reasonable to move it to Category:Parking lots in the United States? The same has been done with Category:Gas stations in the United States, a subcategory of Category:Petrol stations by country. Nyttend 18:05, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Thorny Devil image (Image:Moloch cc03.jpg)
[edit]Hi! A few days ago I changed the source of a photo I took to the Flickr page where I originally posted that photo. But you changed it back to what it was before. Why? It is possible that the photo was taken from another website, but that website must have taken it from my Flickr page as that is the original location of that photo. I do not mind my photo being used on wikipedia, but I would like the source to be listed correctly, and to be credited as the owner of that photo... --Retuow 11:37, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, I see what was going on now. You weren't logged in when you changed the information on the image, which changed the source to a page only listing it under a CC-non-Commercial license which can't be used on Commons. So, am I correct that you, User:Retuow, are the same person as Flickr photographer "Wouter!"? I have edited the description at Image:Moloch cc03.jpg I hope to accurately reflect the situation; please feel free to edit it further as appropriate (preferably while logged in). Thanks! Cheers, -- Infrogmation 20:12, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- Yes I probably was not logged in when I made that previous change. At that time I thought it a bit strange that while I posted that photo on Flickr with a "Attribution-NonCommercial Creative Commons" license that that license was not added to the photo on Wikipedia by whomever uploaded that photo. So I changed the license. Later I understood that such a license is not appropriate for Wikipedia so I changed it back. But yes, I am the same person as "Wouter!" on Flickr, (could not use that username on Wikipedia since it was allready in use, so I reversed the letters). Anyway, the way you changed the text with that photo now is fine by me. Thanks! --Retuow 07:34, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your help
[edit]Thank you for insulting me and acting like I was trying to take credit for a US Navy image. Commons helper added those comments when it moved the image. The source is obvious and you don't need to slap comments screaming about lies, etc. If you're going to fix it, just fix it next time and keep the accusations to yourself. "What an absurd lie to put in an image description" is a gross misunderstanding of reality considering the photographer was plainly listed in the description. --Dual Freq 01:51, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
- No insult toward you was intended; sorry if it seemed that way. The bot is by nature dumb-- and sometimes winds up with pages formatted in absurd ways with misinformation. I have fixed far too many of these, and in the case of this image I let my frustration show with an editorial comment about some of the bot bunk. I suggest that if you use the bot for file transfers, please take time to double check the information and correct errors as needed. Again, I'm sorry you felt insulted; I appologize as I meant nothing personal against you what-so-ever. Cordially, -- Infrogmation 02:11, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
Places and people
[edit]When categorising Image:DFHouston.jpg in the University of Texas in Austin, AT&T and other Universities, the reasoning was not that the image was in fact of those places or that company, but because at one time or another he was President or Chancellor of those institutions or companies. Most of the academic institutions also include files of people associated with that particular institution, not just of bricks and mortar. If it really bothers you I suppose a sub cat of 'People of university of x' could be created, but I assert that it is valid for notable people from an academic institution or that matter a commercial company be included in that institution or company cat. [edit]Hi. Since you closed the DR for Image:Concentration camps FARC Colombia.png could you please retagg it with a suitable license. Why you created this category? Contain only one image. --Starscream 20:59, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
- I thought there would be more images here from looking at the en:Wikipedia article, but then found only one of them was on Commons, the rest were stored locally on en:Wikipedia. - But Albert Johnson wasn't criminal! Image:Collage large.jpg is copy of image:Scotty.jpg and contains in criminal category innocent man! --Starscream 03:12, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
- Remove the criminal category from that image, then. You clearly know more about the subject than I do. (I got to those images while trying to clean up some obviously absurd miscatorization of images placed by bots when uploaders transfering images don't bother to pay attention. I've tried to improve the situation, but when you can do better, please go ahead and do so.) Thanks. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 14:38, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
Categories
[edit]I noticed you made an edit to Category:The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, placing it in Category:1872 books. I have removed the other category (19th century books) as the latter made that superfluous. With books by year, I think a better approach is to create categories for books by decade first, then move on to individual years if there are several books for one year. Take a look at the en.wikipedia system for comparison (which I think we should try to harmonize Commons' categories with). When you create categories in future, also try to include interwiki links (include the en: link and then go to en: and copy links from there). Richard001 05:33, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reccomendations. You're quite correct that Category:19th century books is redundant when the book is in a year category. I should have caught that; thanks for the fix. Would you reccomend book decade categories like "Category:1870s books"? Cheers, -- Infrogmation 14:27, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
Hey
[edit]What the hell is your problem: [2]. There was no "bullshit claims" here. If you have a problem with the way the bot transwikifies, fine, but don't be an asshole to the people doing the moving. Patstuart (talk) 06:10, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, I wasn't trying to be offensive towards you. I appologize for inappropriate language. However I think I have a legitimate concern-- when the listed source is not the source, the listed date is not the date, and the listed author is not the author, what would you call it? "False information", "Bunk", "Garbage" or simply "Wrong"? Whether done by people or bots, if the information is wrong, it should be fixed. Bots can be a useful tool, but of course bots are stupid, and can get inappropriate results if people using them don't keep a close eye on their actions and results. I think Commons has a serious problem with people who upload images via bot without checking or even looking at what the bot does, resulting in images with garbage information fields. (In the example linked above, the bot seems to have been providing fields which might have made sense for an original photo taken by a Wikipedia editor, but don't for an image clearly not original to Wikipedia.) If you have any reccomendations which might improve the situation I would be happy to work with you to help avoid this sort of problem. Thank you. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 14:41, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Please forward your email address and reply to Hollmarsh1@aol.com.
I found your photo at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:CanalStreet13Feb06TVHotelKickoutInterview.jpg while doing photo research for a textbook publisher on a project. I thought your image might be appropriate for inclusion in a literature curriculum.
I am specifically seeking to confirm that you are the copyright holder of the image and your permission to possibly publish it within the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License Version 1.2 and any other applicable laws.
With your permission, we will credit you for your work in the image's permanent description page. Please explicitly state the credit line you require, for example, (c)Infrogmation.
I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.
Thank you,

- Yes, I am the photographer/copyright holder of that image. As the image notes, it is licensed for reuse under either/or GFDL or Creative Commons-by-2.5. Details of those licenses are linked at the image description page; reuse with attribution under either of those licenses requires no further permission from me. Crediting the description page is fine by me. "(c)Infrogmation of New Orleans, http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Infrogmation", or the image link here on Commons rather than my User page link, is my first choice for print credit line. Image:Aab-gagarin-pilot.jpg
[edit]Hi, regarding the Image:Aab-gagarin-pilot.jpg, which tag do you reckon suites best? The image is a scan of a photo in a propaganda photo booklet published in the Soviet Union right after Gagarin's flight. The booklet has no declaration of copyright whatsoever (as mentioned in the description of the image).
Possible suitable tags for this include "Template:Non-free historic image" and "Template:PD-RU-exempt". Would appreciate your comment on this. Aliazimi (talk) 08:48, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, I'm not very familiar with old Russian/Soviet copyrights; see Commons:Licensing#Russia_and_former_Soviet_Union for possibilities. If it is not public domain or free licensed it cannot stay on Commons, which does not allow "fair use" of non free images. "Template:Non-free historic image" is for en:Wikipedia; if the image is not free it should be moved to en:Wikipedia where I think you could make a rationale for free use as an historic image. [edit]Salut Infrogmation! I noticed that you changed back the Pubic domain tags I made to your images. I did this because I wanted to write an article for fr.Wikipédia and use them. I believe that PD-Art is the correct tag because they are more than 100 years old. - - For France Wikipédia writers, the PD-US tag means we cannot us the image because it is less than 100 years old (but older than 1923 for U.S.) This is against French law. - - Since you changed back the tags to PD-US, I will not use the art you contributed. I think this is too bad because they appear to be OK for France (and they are nice images). - - It is unfortunate that you do not want us to use them, but I respect you as a contributor. - - Tchao ! - Your recent travels sure took you around the map. Tampa to Lake City, that's not a direct route. Scenic, though. Speaking of which, have you ever visited DeFuniak Springs? I highly recommend it. :) --Ebyabe (talk) 16:12, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
- Our plan was to visit Tampa then the Boca Raton/Ft. Lauderdale area, but wishing to avoid Hurricane Fay we headed back up the Peninsula early and improvised a substitution of Lake City and Pensacola for the last few days of our time in Florida. I haven't visited DeFuniak Springs, but will put that on the list for a future Florida visit, thanks for the reccomendation. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 16:22, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Commonist
[edit]Do you use Commonist to upload? It's a multi-photo upload tool, and I've found it amazingly useful. :) --Ebyabe (talk) 16:12, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
- Wow, no I've never used that. Sounds very useful; I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the reccomendation! -- Infrogmation (talk) 16:23, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
Ships / Barges / Paddle steamers / Sternwheelers / River Boats / Riverboats / Passenger ships / Boats
[edit]I started a discussion in Category:Ships. As not native speaker of English I have a problem in classifying river boats/ships, especially Passenger river boats/ships. I tried to solve confusion, please have a look as sysop over there.
Classifying my own barge nl:Stella Maris 03011455 was not so easy as I found out the existence of categories River Boats and Riverboats as I looked for Inland water vessels. Finally the correct category was Category:Barges of the Netherlands and because these small barges are not longer used by the profession, also as Category:Traditional barges. In fact it is a yacht now, I couldn't effort one and my ship was planned to be scrapped in 1969.
As you see I am interested in ships and I already added categories to a lot of ships, lacking ship categories. You reverted my category on Image:Algiers19May06NatchezPaddlewheelA.jpg and now she is not to easy to find if someone takes the ship/boat route. Special reason for reverting ? --Stunteltje (talk) 06:51, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
Did you have year of establishment in mind? You didn't provide any description so I can't be sure. en.wikipedia has w:Category:Magazines by year of establishment; is this the same thing; should I add interwiki? Should it be renamed, perhaps? We might also want decade categories so they are more populated. For example I have added a couple of decade level categories to Category:Books made in the 19th century (another for renaming, I think) because each year level category is only going to have one or two entries. Richard001 (talk) 06:25, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
- No, simply categorizing images by their actual year, similar to the year categories for newspapers, automobiles, paintings, etc. An image from a magazine published in 1900 goes in "Category:1900 magazines" etc. Sorry, I didn't know this might be ambiguous in any way. If you think there is a use for categories for magazine companies or brands by year of establishment similar to the en:Wikipedia category above, go ahead and create such a category. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 08:54, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Flickr review
[edit]Dear Admin Infrogmation, Do you know when flickr bot will review images posted on flickr? No review has been done images posted here for about 18 hours according to this : [4] and there are now almost 200 images here. I thought that flickrbot or trusted users inspect images every 6 hours. It did not review images last night and when I got up this morning 8 hours later, its still the same case.
- Its just that the Flickr Review hasn't reviewed images since 5PM Saturday in the Pacific Coast of Canada (California) time zone where I live. Its now 2 PM Sunday...and it still hasn't reviewed images. I wonder if someone else might review them. Perhaps the flickrbot 'forgot' to review the images at its specified intervals. I just wanted to thank a few flickr owners for their help in releasing images onto Commons for WP articles but until the images are passed, I can't use them in any article and send out an appropriate thank you note to them. With kind Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 21:12, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. I don't know off hand what the problem is. If it continues I shall bring it up with other admins, or feel free to ask on the Commons:Village pump or elsewhere. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 22:43, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
- The Flickr bot must have malfunctioned. It hasn't marked any pictures at the 5:15-5:20 PM Pacific Savings Time interval and there is still a backlog of images. Can you please send a note to other Admins or trusted users to consider analysing them singlehandedly if this problem repeats itself in 6 hours time? I still can't thank the flickr image holder who changed the license for 2 images....because they have not been approved. (I am a bit embarrased!) Thank You sir or Madam. Regards from Canada --Leoboudv (talk) 01:03, 22 September 2008 (UTC)
- The flickr review bot has not run in 1 full day as it has about 100 images waiting for review http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Flickr_review_needed here]. I'm surprised that Commons has a problem with the bot in September. It was performing fine in August. --Leoboudv (talk) 09:55, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, the bot seems to be having problems, also when uploading full size versions. -- Infrogmation (talk) 10:02, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

- Have to say, I rather like it. That one might qualify for de minimis, but it's dubious. -mattbuck (Talk) 22:23, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
source of photos
[edit]Thanks for the message. I am not the actual photographer of most of the images I uploaded. They are originals that were passed onto me from my mother when she passed away several years ago and I mistakenly assumed that was able to claim ownership of them for uploading. My confusion over this can also explain the errors made when labeling the images as 'self-made'. My apologies. So if there is no documentation or markings to signify their origin, and they are originals, then there is no way to share these images on the site? --ChucksBike-O-Rama (talk) 15:52, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the message, I replied on your talk page. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 18:07, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your messages as well! I appreciate the help and advice on how to effectively use the site. I am unfortunately being named as a suckpuppet (along with a slew of other names) by someone I believe is abusing his/her authority to block users + revert their edits to the site. Hopefully this will be handled properly but I wont hold my breath. Anyway, thanks again for being so cool amd for your help!!--ChucksBike-O-Rama (talk) 18:42, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Image:JohnMcCainXavier08HowieluvzusFrontA.jpg and 2008 campaign subcategory for candidates?
[edit]I guess the question to ask is whether McCain was at Xavier in his capacity as a presidential candidate. However you do raise a point that with the McCain category there are a lot of images in there not related to the 2008 campaign. I decided to recategorize it based on what has been done with Obama's category, which has the same issue. Perhaps it would be helpful to create separate subcategories for each candidate (presidential, VP, and also rans) to collect media relating specifically to the 2008 campaign. --BrokenSphere 00:50, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
Ahh
[edit]I understand now, makes sense I didn't see the name connection, just the URL, I flickr approved it [5]. Thanks. MBisanz talk 03:21, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
Avoiding redundant categories
[edit]Sorry, i didn't realize it was already in a hurricane katrina category.. I was actually doing the same thing and was cleaning out a main category and moving into lower categories and didn't even realize i had done it..
- No problem, thanks. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 18:36, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Afghanistan
[edit]Sorry, what I wrote yesterday in Commons:Deletion requests/Image:500 Afghanis closeup - 06092008.jpg was wrong, outdated. Teofilo (talk) 07:38, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
See also Commons_talk:Licensing#Afghanistan. Teofilo (talk) 07:42, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks. -- Infrogmation (talk) 13:31, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
- Well, let's consider this request as withdrawn for the time being. I may request this deletion again in the future if I get a clearer picture of what is required for Afghanistan. Teofilo (talk) 08:29, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
