Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

File:Paste_up_Melbourne.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Please categorise images correctly
[edit]I stumbled upon File:Escape from Melbourne by mugley.jpg which you had uploaded. The image was categorised in only the most general categories such as Category:Water, Category:Skylines and Category:Clouds. I have changed all categories in to correct - more specific - categories such as Category:Clouds in Australia, Category:Skylines of Melbourne and Category:Bays of Australia. Please try to find the most specific possible categories for your uploads in future. You might want to read this for more information on categorising media in Wikimedia. - Takeaway (talk) 23:28, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:54, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

Commons Galleries
[edit]Although policy does not absolutely require it, as a general rule, Commons galleries are useful only when the subject has many images in its category and we want to select a few representative images to show in one place. Policy does require that a gallery have more than one image.
Thus most of the galleries you have created recently are either explicit violations of policy or are outside of our usual practice.
You will find that there are half a dozen Admins who do New Page Patrol. Since 90% of all new gallery pages are out of scope -- usually vandalism, advertising, or articles with no images -- you will find that we are fairly quick to delete pages that are out of scope, including several of yours.
If you want to create new galleries, I suggest that you do it in a sandbox page in your own User space, such as User:HappyWaldo/Sandbox1 and then when the gallery is ready, including more than one image, copy it to the main gallery space. This will avoid it being deleted while you are in the process of populating it.
If you have any questions, you can leave a note here for the next week or so, or, anytime at my talk page. And thank you for your contributions to Commons. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 13:23, 19 March 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry, I should've investigated this beforehand. I did plan on developing some of the galleries into actual galleries, loosely modelled on Monet, Van Gogh, etc. But from now on I will avoid starting gallery pages unless it's absolutely recquired and could be helpful to users. - HappyWaldo (talk) 14:23, 19 March 2011 (UTC)
- Good -- while I don't want to discourage you from creating useful galleries, there are so many different things that Commons needs, that creating galleries that are very similar to their categories is not a high priority. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 14:31, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

[edit]This media may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Treasury Casino Brisbane.jpg, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

year in Aust categories
[edit]Please dont remove year in Australia, or its subcategories from photographs as its a requirement of Wikimedia Australia that photographers who apply for assistance categorise their uploads in these categories. Gnangarra 05:21, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry. But why are you adding parent categories (Buildings in Fremantle) to images of buildings that already have their own categories, eg the Round House? It's messy. - HappyWaldo (talk) 19:41, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
Autopatrol given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 19:53, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

Flickr2Commons
[edit]I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. To use it, you just need to go to the url and authorize it (where it says "authorise first"). Elisfkc (talk) 16:35, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:PXIII by Berlinde De Bruyckere MONA Hobart.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. US license necessary
[edit]Hello, I notice you only indicate an Australian copyright status in your uploads. Please remember that the Commons, per Commons:Licensing, require a public domain work to be in the public domain in both the U.S. and the country of origin of the work. Therefore, please always indicate the US copyright status. You can use Commons:Hirtle chart as a help. Hekerui (talk) 11:26, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
Grosvenor Chambers
[edit]I don't as rule remove other editors' work without consulting them, so do you agree that it might improve the article on the Grosvenor Chambers to replace your pic with John T. Collins' 1977 architectural photograph of the building facade (made before the construction of the monstrous high rise behind it) in the info box? It is more representative of its appearance, shows the whole building and is less oblique. Best regards, Jamesmcardle (talk) 01:38, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Aldersgate House Melbourne.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
