Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open!
[edit]You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear Godsfriendchuck,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
-- Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 09:44, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
"Ship" vs. "boat"
[edit]My understanding is that the vessels of the Staten Island Ferry are "boats" - "ferry boats" - and not "ships". The Staten Island Ferry itself calls them boats, see this. I think you should change the categories you created from the disambiguator "(ship)" to "(boat)". Beyond My Ken (talk) 04:43, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
- Are you sure? I only created one new category for a Staten Island Ferry vessel, that being the Guy V. Molinari. All the other ones were preexisting and already labelled as ships. Should those be changed to "boat" as well? Godsfriendchuck (talk) 05:11, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry, I thought you had created them all. I do think they should all be "boat", "ferry boat" or "ferry". Beyond My Ken (talk) 06:56, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
IMO 9608960 has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

IMO categorization
[edit]Hello Chris, thanks for all your contributions. But why creating IMO categories without shipyard and year? For example see Category:Ships built at Jiangdong Shipyard, Wuhu: You are the only one, who added the shipyard to the ship name category! Greetings --Ein Dahmer (talk) 18:47, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
- Is there a rule about always placing the shipyard and year categories in the IMO category? If yes, then I will start doing so. If not, then I disagree with those categories being placed there rather than in the ship name category. I believe the typical user would not find a shipyard or year of construction category filled with IMO number sequences, instead of more recognizable ship names, to be as useful or interesting. The only case in which I think those categories should be placed in the IMO category rather than the ship name category is when we have an IMO-number-assigned ship that has operated under multiple names, and we have categories for more than one of those names. Best, Godsfriendchuck (talk) 15:18, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

I'm not sure I'd call them an "airline", although they do own a few small planes. They do charter flights, but mostly they do pilot training (I think they're the main place people around here learn to take of and land in a float plane) and scenic flights over the city and its environs. - Jmabel ! talk 05:53, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
- Fair point, although there are similar companies in the Airlines category (Skydive DeLand and Performance Flight, for example). I'm unsure what category would be more appropriate for a company like this, maybe Air transport in Washington (state)? Godsfriendchuck (talk) 21:18, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
- Certainly more appropriate. I'm wondering if we ought to have some special category for these little independents like this. It might technically meet some definition of airline, but only in the sense of the Bob Newhart routine about the Grace L. Ferguson Airline and Storm Door Company. - Jmabel ! talk 00:39, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
