Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
[edit]Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Everything about some people is about Watergate?
[edit]Hi. I'm having trouble figuring out what Category:Watergate is redundant to, when categorizing Category:Resignation of Richard Nixon. I noticed that people in Watergate scandal have been put under Category:Watergate but that's probably a bad idea: Not everything about those people is about Watergate. Either a person category is not redundant to a event category, or Category:Elvis Presley and Richard Nixon at the White House, 1970 is now about Watergate on Commons because it is related to Richard Nixon. --Closeapple (talk) 03:21, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
- I see where you're coming from, Closeapple, but by the same argument Category:Baker Street tube station, Category:Deerstalkers (headgear) and Category:Charlton Heston are all related to mysticism on Commons because they are subcategories of subcategories of Category:Mysticism (>Category:Mystics > Category:Arthur Conan Doyle > Category:Sherlock Holmes > Category:Sherlock Holmes actors). I think that sometimes logic and consistency in such matters must bow to the imperative to make categories as easily available and visible as possible. I appreciate that you're thinking about this, though, because I'm also interested in such questions. Gildir (talk) 19:05, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Michael Reardon 2.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Michael Reardon 2.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Dan Rather on location and CBS
[edit]Hi. I noticed that you moved Category:CBS from Category:Dan Rather on location assignments to Category:Dan Rather. He hasn't been with CBS since 2005; for example, his main show since 2006 has been en:Dan Rather Reports, which is on AXS TV (HDnet). Many of the photos on Commons are post-2005. I'm thinking of maybe removing Category:CBS from both categories; Category:CBS could go on the few photos where he's actually doing something for CBS. Does that sound reasonable? --Closeapple (talk)

[edit]You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear Gildir,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.
In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,

Use of special characters for sortkey prefixes
[edit]Hello, by convention, special characters as prefixes are employed for "views" of the category other than the one ordered by the primary sortkey. In particular, "by country" category views by country don't use them. See for example, Category:Buildings by country and Category:People by country. Thus, the sortkey for Category:Topless men of the United States is

, not

Quick assistance
[edit]Hey Gildir, I'm having trouble using crop tool as every time when I would attempt to crop an image this message would pop: "Upload failed! [api] Received error: autoblocked : Your IP address has been blocked automatically, because it was used by a blocked user". However, I haven't been blocked, received any messages implying that I would be blocked such as warnings, etc. So I'm not sure if this is a glitch on crop tool or am I really banned even though I can still edit on wikipedias and upload images here. There only complication is me using the crop tool. Would you happen to know what's the matter or who I can reach out to? --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 11:08, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

[edit]Copyright status: File:ISS-65 Vande Hei and McArthur check water samples.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:ISS-65 Vande Hei and McArthur check water samples.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Sic?
[edit]Hey there! Just curious why you marked "Freedom 7" as sic at File:Kennedy, Johnson, and Webb in CCAFS Hangar S high bay (LOC-62-6880).jpg. No problem with it, I'm just not seeing the reason. — Huntster (t @ c) 20:51, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for asking! "Freedom 7" was Alan Shepard's Mercury capsule; "Friendship 7" was John Glenn's. The caption of the file in question reads, "...astronaut John Glenn's Freedom 7 Mercury capsule..." I don't know which capsule is actually pictured. (The image source is a dead link.) Gildir (talk) 21:01, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Not Scotti?
[edit]I see you removed the Piero Scotti category from some Ferrari pictures. Why? Is it not Piero Scotti in the pictures? Ketil3 (talk) 04:59, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
- No, it's because the categories for the cars themselves are subcategories of Scotti's category. Gildir (talk) 06:20, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
- Oh, I see. I have done this for hundreds of cars, to preserve the car-owner relation as well as the image-person relation. A given car usually had many owners (example: 1949 Ferrari 166 SC s/n 0012M owned by both Vallone and Romano), so I think it is unfortunate in general, to remove the person category from the image file. Ketil3 (talk) 15:25, 4 February 2022 (UTC)

Dear Wikimedian,
You are receiving this message because we noticed that you previously voted in the Picture of the Year contest. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
In this second and final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2023.
Round 2 will end at UTC.
If you have already voted for Round 2, please ignore this message.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
