Request for unblock - "I'm innocent, Gov!"
[edit]Hi team,
Can I please have my WikiMedia acct unblocked?
I have been an active & "well-behaved" Wikipedia user (user:geekstreet) since mid 2016 and have uploaded > 60 of my own images to Wikimedia in that time. I have just logged-on to submit some more files and found I am blocked due to "Abusing multiple accounts". :(
I suspect this has occurred due to some else's bad behaviour, as my last activity on Wikimedia was 04 March 2017 (according to my "Global contributions" page.
My current IP address is 122.108.138.104 and the block ID is #292427.
Thanks!
- Some of your files were deleted, then they were re-uploaded by Kfergusson. Is that an alternate account of yours? Guanaco (talk) 23:25, 4 July 2017 (UTC)
- I'm always willing to give the benefit of the doubt - the edits were a bit suspicious - there were three identical files uploaded by yourself, deleted and then re-uploaded 3 weeks later by another user - see list below, one with exactly the same name. I have removed the block, the autoblock seems to have expired.

- Oh "That!" (face palm)
- Long story ...
- I put together the WP article Tasmanian_Seafarers_Memorial and was sent a number of photos by Mrs Kath Fergusson, Chairman of the Memorial Committee.
- I understood these to be taken by various members of the committee, and explained to her that I couldn't just submit them with their verbal say-so, but needed to get copyright clearance.
- I then submitted 3 of them to WM Commons & registered them with the OTRS Generator and send Kath a pro-forma permissions email for the original authors to submit.
- I linked the photos into the article & waited for them to be authorized.
- I then heard from Kath that the photos I had selected were actually taken by her, not someone else.
- I told her I needed her copyright approval for them, but given that she had limited knowledge of the worlds of wiki, I suggested (with her permission) creating a new WM account under her name (kmfergusson), and I could use it to log onto WM and change the copyright author details for her 3 images.
- Unfortunately, I went back to WM and tried to find a way to amend the copyright details but couldn't.
- So I deleted them out, logged off as me, logged on on behalf of Kath and re-submitted them, this time saying it was "my own work".
- I thought this was a preferred option to having to step her through submitting emails or photos, given her lack of computer familiarity.
- I thought that was the end of it until I went to login this week :(
- So I gather I've f**d up by using multiple accts and using them to replace incorrectly-tagged images (same pix, just different copyright info). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Geekstreet (talk • contribs) 04:59, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
- Yeah, using multiple accounts has unfortunately become the hallmark of every type of troll, vandal, and copyright abuser. If you have a legitimate need for a second account, it's best to disclose it; for example I have User:Guanabot on Wikipedia for fixing double redirects.
- Definitely don't make an account under another person's name for any reason. Use OTRS instead; they're slow but very capable of helping you. They should be able to accept forwarded emails, scanned hand-written notes, etc., as long as the permission can be shown to actually exist. Guanaco (talk) 15:15, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
