First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}

Welcome and some help with categories

[edit]

Hello Follash, welcome on Commons, and thanks for uploading pictures. I especially liked the Huntly image - quite stunning, puts my rainy day image to shame!

If I may, I'll note however that you haven't quite got the hang of the category system yet. You tend to place them into categories you guess yourself - that is why the bottom bar of the categories always ends up all red when you created your images - these categories do not exist! And because they do not exist, no one will ever find your images! So when you upload a new image, start with a top level category (such as Category:Scouts or Category:Auckland), and then work your way down into the most appropriate, existing categories. Please do not create new categories unless you know how to tie them into the category tree, and how they should be formatted (don't worry, you'll learn after a time).

Have a look at how I changed your images to sort them into the correct categoires, and travel up and down the category tree a little. You will find by the way, that there is no separate North Shore City category. I've placed most of the appropriate images into Auckland Urban Districts, which is as close as it gets at the moment. I think I will be creating a NSC category though, because you are right, we should have one.

Hope I didn't come across too strong - just trying to help. If you'd like any (help) or want to ask a quuestion, please do not hesitate to ask on my page. Happy uploading. Ingolfson 10:20, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park

[edit]

Hello Follash. I wonder if the Gulf Park merits its own category? Its not that a park normally wouldn't. But what I consider a bit different here is that it covers *almost all* the Hauraki Gulf - so every image showing Hauraki Gulf should normally also be in here. Wouldn't it make more sense to keep them in Hauraki Gulf then? I am a bit concenred that images might otherwise be placed sometimes in one, and sometimes in the other (and Commons sorting rules say that an image should normally NOT be placed into two categories, when one category is below the first). Ingolfson 08:03, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Map of the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park
Rethinking the above - could I make the suggestion that the category be retained, but be used for images relating to the park *operations* (such as conservation efforts, DOC installations, guides and walking routes etc...) which are clearly related to the park, IN ADDITION to being part of the Hauraki Gulf on its own? Would that be a good compromise? Ingolfson 08:09, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies for moving so quickly, I was so bold and have already changed your images in their tagging, as well as changed the category description and sorting for Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park as per above. Please revert back if you disagree and want tod discuss this. PS: I hope you don't feel like I am 'stalking' your edits - I simply work on *all* new (and older) images tagged as being related to NZ. Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Thank you. Siebrand 10:16, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A very beautiful picture. Thanks for adding it! Ingolfson 09:09, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Follash, you still haven't added a license tag to this one. I didn't place the deletion tag - but it is already over the limit, meaning that any admin would be in rights to delete it. Please save it by adding your license tag. Cheers. Ingolfson 22:18, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Commercial use of a photograph authored by you

[edit]

Dear Follash:

I am about to publicize a website containing a photograph of yours, obtained through Wikimedia Commons. The end result is the following:

http://sites.google.com/site/aldoloup/articulos/-que-tan-seguras-son-las-aeronaves

The same page in English, Portuguese and maybe other languages will follow. A printed version is envisioned too.

I want to be sure that you have no complaints about this use of your work. I really don't want to have problems over copyright issues down the road.

I want to thank for the opportunity to use your work in commercial ventures.

If you have any issue with this use of your work, please let me know it immediately.

I am acting in good faith, in the firm belief that the license for commercial use that appears in the Wikimedia Commons page of your photograph is completely valid, accurate and current.

Thank you very much.

Aldo Loup.

P.S.: Right now I know you only by your pseudonym, but if you agree, I would like to credit your photograph with your real name.

Dear Follash:

Please forgive me for writing you once again, related to the photograph published here:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d4/Polynesian_Blue_737-800.JPG

It is not my intention to annoy you with repeating communications, but as you already know, I want to use that photograph in commercial publishing projects.

Right now I have established a link between the photograph and the commercial webpage of mine, available here:

http://www.naturapop.com/articulos/-que-tan-seguras-son-las-aeronaves

With this technical arrangement no reproduction is taking place and no file is being transferred. But in the future I would like to actually copy that file in order to publish it commercially by my own means.

Unfortunatelly, I have had some negative experiences with the "Creative Conmmons" and similar free licenses (people backing from the free-commercial-use of the license, vandalism concerning the true author of the photograph, etc.)

Therefore, much to my regret, I am forced to ask you a written statement granting me, if you so wish, your permision to reproduce, royalty-free, in a non-exclusive, non-time-limited, worldwide fashion, your photograph, in Spanish, English, Portuguese and other languages.

I am hereby asking you your kind permission to reproduce and distribute that photograph in my printed book, in an electronic version of my book and in other associated mass distribution media, for example my aforementioned Internet Website. Please note that these are commercial ventures. Of course and as expected, full credit will be given where it is due and appropriate copyright claims or notices related to that photograph will be included.

Once again, please excuse me for stretching your patience, but I would really be glad if I could count with your kind written permission. Thank you very much for your diligent attention.

Sincerely yours,

Aldo Loup.

I will be awaiting your written reply at my personal e-mail address: aldoloup@hotmail.com

P. S.: In case you are not the sole and only copyright owner of the requested material so that these copyrights are shared with others, I would appreciate any information you can provide me about anybody else I should contact.
