First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Please do not set the wrong license on your files

Thanks for uploading OWID maps. However, please:

  • Don't set a license that is not the one set by OWID, which usually is CCBY, not CCBY-SA (note that the former is much better)
  • Don't add-just-the-filename.png as file caption – add something useful or nothing at all.
  • Don't add-just-the-filename.png as file description – add something useful (e.g. copy the relevant part from the source in quotes) or nothing at all.
  • Don't add texts as {{ro|1=Romanian text}} Romanian when they are English.

Please do that for your subsequent uploads, it would be nice if you corrected these issues for your uploads; now somebody sooner or later has to go through all your uploads and laboriously somehow correct these problems. Please give your uploads proper file titles

Hello, thanks for your OWID uploads but please name your uploaded files in reasonable manners and not e.g. "Exports-of-goods-and-services-constant-2010-us.png" or "Water-productivity.png". You can use spaces (not hyphens) and such titles aren't really descriptive but very ambiguous. For example, instead of "File:Adults-defined-as-obese.png" name it "World map of the share of adults that are obese, 2016, OWID". This makes it easy to find, easy to read in category pages and elsewhere, and is far more descriptive (e.g. also informs about it being a world, about the share not total number, and that it's an OWID map). Also see Commons:File naming. You could also rename so of your past uploads.

Hello, Prototyperspective. When uploading image files from other sources, I preferred to keep their original name (to make them easy to find when a later update would be necessary), but I added a proper description in English. Reading your message and finding that the Commons:File naming rules impose specific requirements, I will comply. Sorry about that! Great, thanks a lot! The original name is the title in the image or the title in the interactive OWID element. Nobody sees those file-titles used for storage so they are not well thought through and are only how these files are stored on the server (files are often stored with hyphens in the filename for technical reasons). Using these filenames instead of the file titles makes it harder instead of easier to find them to e.g. later update them for others. Prototyperspective (talk) 18:10, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
