Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:48, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Rank Structure
[edit]Hi Farawayman. I enjoyed finding the SA badges of rank. However, there are slight errors in those of senior rank. The shoulder board of a brigadier would have the castle at the top (nearest the shoulder) and the three small stars below. Likewise the castle would be above the stars of a colonel and lieutenant-colonel. As an example please see my contribution at the Wikipedia article entitled "Commandant" Kind regards. Whoosises (talk) 00:44, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
- Hmmm, I need to find the original source files, because they were done in JPG format before I got to know about SVG! Will see if I can find them and correct accordingly. Thanks. Farawayman (talk) 17:41, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

SA Army Emblems and usage of Licencing on Wikipedia
[edit]Dear Farawayman,
I have submitted the article 44 Parachute Brigade (South Africa) and have submitted emblems which is currently still in contention with Wikipedia pending approval. I am waiting for the Director of Heraldry in the SANDF to send me the necessary release form. I however would like to ask you under what licencing you have put your emblems and symbols up? If you can give me the licencing string then I could also use this and avoid any emblems or symbols removed or being in contention
many thanks--213.132.63.33 06:23, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons does not accept fair use content.
We do this because Commons is a shared media repository. Downstream wikis have different policies based on local laws. Uses that are acceptable under US law, for example, may not be acceptable in many other countries with more restrictive rules. In addition, fair use is not compatible with our aim as a collection of freely distributable media files. Therefore, Commons cannot legally rely on fair use provisions. Non-free content that may be used with reference to fair use may be uploaded locally if your project allows this.

File tagging File:Valerie Deacon NYMAS.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Valerie Deacon NYMAS.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |
