Quindi per favore sposta da "Archaeological museum - Egnazia through the ages (Room I)" a "Museo archeologico nazionale (Egnazia) - Egnazia through the ages (Room I)". Grazie :) Sailko (talk) 14:50, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

- User:Threecharlie Suggerimenti giusti.
;-) --Threecharlie (talk) 16:16, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
Hi Fabrizio Garisi
Paintings in the Uffizi Gallery by artist now has 176 subcats, most of them with only 1-5 or even less items. I am sorry but this is no improvement. Because now you do not see the paintings and you have to search, scroll and click endlessly. Better is to keep greater context like gothic Italian painters, or 15th-century painters...by country of origin. Please consider this and please delete the very small categories for greater context. Categories are for sorting, by using a category for 1 or 2 files it is the contrary what a category is for.
If you want to we can move this discussion to the category to perhaps discuss with more editors. Oursana (talk) 00:22, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, Oursana
- First of all, excuse my English: I am forced to translate everything from Italian with Google Translate.
- You're right when you say that, in search of a painting, it's boring to open hundreds of categories sorted "by artist" to find, in each of them, only one or two files. I, too, ponder the opportunity to hold a category by artist in large museums, which usually host hundreds or thousands of artists with one or two works each.
- But, regarding the Uffizi, in the end I considered the following: 1) there are five possible search criteria; 2) the five search criteria are the ones that were already there; 3) many search criteria would be useful to the searcher, but they multiply the difficulties of classification and orderly maintenance of the uploaded files.
- Let me explain in detail.
- By artist is one of five search criteria that were present in the "Paintings in the Uffizi Gallery": by artist, by century, by genre, by production area, by room. (But I found them all largely incomplete and messy).
- These five branches all start from the root "Paintings in the Uffizi Gallery”. So, to search for a specific painting you don't have to search, scroll and click endlessly all the artists in the "by artist" category branch: if it suits you, you can also scroll through one of the other four search criteria.
- An alphabetical list of artists is not a criterion for sorting "paintings": it is a criterion for sorting "artists".
- This is the reason why the catalogues of museums and art galleries, after having dedicated almost all the pages to illustrating the works in the museum, at the end of the publication "also" report an alphabetical list of the authors, for each of them with a reference to his works in the museum, very often no more than one or two. It is one of the possible search criteria and helps those who point to a specific author.
- If anything, it would be helpful to add more search branches. You are right when you say that groupings such as, in the examples you gave, "Gothic Italian painters" or "15th-century painters" would be useful. In my opinion, however, they should not destroy the alphabetical list by author, but rather add to it. They should be part of the new search criteria: respectively "Painters by style by country in the Uffizi Gallery" and "Painters by century in the Uffizi Gallery".
- Certainly useful, but I don't know if it would be appropriate: the more search criteria there are, the more difficult it makes for publishers who make new uploads. And the more difficult it is to maintain messy uploaded files.
- (I personally would not be able to manage these classifications and study whether a painting or an author was classified in the International Gothic or the Early Renaissance. But I hope someone better than me can do it).
- So I'm just sorting out the categories of the five search criteria that I found, already created, in “Paintings in the Uffizi Gallery”, without adding any more and without delete any of the existing ones.
- I would like to discuss these issues publicly. What search criteria are appropriate in an art gallery? When the number of search criteria (which help researchers) becomes excessive (making the task difficult for loaders and maintainers)? Do you know how to open such a discussion?
