First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: correct name
 • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello, El.!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Warning sign
This media was probably deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Vakuum-Kondensator.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Vakuum-Kondensator.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Please stop duplicating the filenames into the description. Andy Dingley (talk) 11:56, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The template does this automatically. The template also identifies those that haven't had a full description added and categorizes these for later fix-up (as a sub-cat of the book's cat). If a minimal description (e.g. a duplicate of the filename) is added, then this process breaks and it's no longer possible to see which images still need real useful descriptions adding.
Besides which, the images already have good structured and meaningful filenames. These minimal descriptions aren't adding anything beyond that.
Thanks Andy Dingley (talk) 11:59, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

If you want to change the name of this file, re-upload it under the correct name. The tag the incorrectly-named image with CORRECT NAME GOES HERE. The old image should then be speedily deleted. I would also recommend noting that it has had the bad name template applied at its deletions request page, just to keep it clear. Fixing deletion requests

[edit]

Hi El, and thanks for your help with the deletion requests. A few pointers, I hope you don't mind.

 • When fixing a deletion request, add in the name/time of the person nominating it for deletion. You can find this info in the history of the page, you can copy/paste from there.
 • Also if there is no reason given, maybe they give a reason in the edit summary that you can use.
 • If you find a deletion request that has no reason on it, you can remove the template. State in the edit summary "no reason given". When I did what you're doing, I also left a message with who-ever nominated it saying I had removed the template, but that they were free to nominate it again as long as they gave a reason.
 • If you find that it's a "delete" template, but it is actually a duplicate, you can change the tag to name of other file.
 • And most importantly, if you have any opinion on whether it should go / it should stay / why you think it was nominated, please say so! In German if you want - we can all use Google Translate :)

Keep it up though - I'm adding info to your fixes where I find them.

Kind regards, -- Deadstar (msg) 19:37, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Viele Grüße --El-Bardo (talk) 10:41, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi El-Bardo! What you have done so far with the deletion requests is very useful. The imcomplete requests would never be looked at again otherwise (well, until someone else does what you're doing!) To indicate that you're just fixing a request, you can add Fixing request ~~~~ or something like that instead of the long sentence you paste in now. But feel free to do it your way, it works just fine!
For the "no reason given": Check template, edit history and talk page for any clues to why it is nominated. If there is nothing, and I also could see no reason I used to remove the template from the image, stating in the edit summary "Removing deletion template - no reason given". And then I would go to the nominator's talk page, and say something along the lines of:
:File:Name of file.jpg
You requested the above file for deletion but you did not give a reason. Without a reason the request cannot be processed, and I have taken the deletion template off the image. Feel free to nominate the file for deletion again, but please make sure you give a reason and follow all the steps on the template so it can be processed. You can also use the "Nominate for deletion" link on the left which will automate the process for you. Thanks, ~~~~
That should save us all a bit of guess work. And if they really want it deleted, they can nominate it again. If it is an IP-address (not a registered user) that placed the deletion template, I would just remove the template. No point in notifying the IP-user. If they come back, they can see in the history that it was removed because there was no reason given.
I hope that answers your question. Let me know if you have any other questions. Viele Grüße -- Deadstar (msg) 15:10, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Deadstar, thank you for your helpful message. Now, I´ll do my very best... Kind regards --El-Bardo (talk) 16:42, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Einordnung Luftbilder Klippeneck

[edit]

Hallo El.

--El. (talk) 10:00, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't nominate these kind of files for deletion. You probably noticed the message Error creating thumbnail: Invalid thumbnail parameters or PNG file with more than 12.5 million pixels. That's because we currently don't render images more than 12.5 million pixels because of performance issues, but we might do that in the future. Multichill (talk) 14:02, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, thank you for informaton. --El. (talk) 14:05, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What is the basis for the name of this category? Anything citable? There are numerous trestles in Seattle. I live about 2 miles from this one (which, by the way, is currently being torn down & replaced) and have never heard it called "Seattle Trestle." I've always heard it called the "45th Street Viaduct" or "NE 45th Street Viaduct". - Jmabel ! talk 17:30, 15 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is Trestle Bridges in Seattle the better name for this category? --El. (talk) 09:22, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That would be a good category (and would cover more than just this one bridge). I'll sort it out. I just wanted to make sure this wasn't a case of you knowing something I didn't. - Jmabel ! talk 15:28, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jahrhundert. --Haselburg-müller (talk) 22:25, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Kategorisierung Fotoflüge

[edit]

-- Gerd Fahrenhorst (talk) 11:56, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
