FOP and speedy deletion
Please note that images should not be nominated for speedy deletion because of FOP. See COM:CSD#F3: "This does not apply to photographs taken in a public place, though the photograph itself remains subject to the other speedy criteria if its authorship is in question. Given the complexity of copyright rules like freedom of panorama and de minimis, it is best for such issues to be resolved in a formal deletion request." King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 00:11, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
I see that you've just categorised the above on Commons as Christian headgear. There is no mention of it being specifically Christian headgear in its WP article? Early Quakers wore them, but they were supposed to wear clothes that blended in, and at that time everybody wore them. Victorian artists adopted them, together with the smock. They are currently on sale in trekking shops in the UK, and I wear one all the time, with flowers on it, and I don't have any religion. It's also a traditional hat in Australia - the one that cartoonists draw corks hanging from, to keep flies away. So do you have evidence that I'm wearing Christian headgear? If not, I'll remove the category. Thanks. Storye book (talk) 20:00, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Storye book: The hat is closely associated with Quakers, and is still considered to be "traditional Quaker clothing" and is still worn by conservative sects that wear traditional clothing. It is of course not exclusively religious, but I believe that it counts as Quaker clothing in certain contexts. Di (they-them) (talk) 20:43, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
- Ah, that must be an American category, then. Some of my friends are quakers , and there are meeting houses in my two nearest towns, here in the UK, but I have never seen any of them wearing any kind of hat. So that's fine then - the category just doesn't apply to the quakers in my area - though there may be a conservative quaker group in London, I suppose. The picture shows the Brothers Bratt at a Quaker meeting at Devonshire House, London, in 1860. As you see, the other quakers were wearing normal Victorian clothes, so the Bratt bros. were considered eccentric for insisting on wearing their father's clothes, so said the newspapers at the time. I tried to track them down for an article, but could not find enough material. I think they may have been tailors. Storye book (talk) 09:02, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
- Update. Ah, hang on - I've just realised. On the cover is a picture of Emilie Dorothy Hilliard Willson (New York c. 1838 - Leeds 18 January 1899) who later became the wife of JJ Willson, the artist. Emilie was the daughter of architect John Hilliard (d. before 1861) of New York. She is with her sister, both wearing headscarves, and the man in the hat is possibly her father or an uncle. (Note the Gilead-type bonnet on the mother/aunt!) But I hadn't realised before, that the father/uncle is wearing a wideawake! But the first picture raises a question about the wideawake hat. Today in the UK, we understand the wideawake to be an Australian hat with a flat brim, as mine is. You can lift one or both sides of the brim and fix it to the crown with press studs (poppers in US), but it's still really a flat brim. That is what the American uncle/father is wearing - you can see him to the left of the Bratt brothers. But seeing the three of them side by side - the Bratt Brothers are wearing a hat with an intentionally curved brim. Side by side, the two styles look quite different. I'm wondering whether they are two named styles of hats, not one style? Just wondering. Storye book (talk) 09:36, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

British Middle East Command emblem
Great to see that you created the emblem of the British Middle East Command, but there is a mistake - the lower part of the shield should be dark blue, not black. If you make an image search in Google for "Middle East Command", you will see that almost all badges are blue. Moreover, the Imperial War Museum says it's blue: https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/30072799 188.22.182.206 19:32, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
- One addition - red and blue makes more sense because of the British flag. 188.22.182.206 20:42, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
- @188.22.182.206: Thank you, I have fixed the file. Di (they-them) (talk) 20:43, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
Royal cypher
You were very quick whipping up the new cypher! Will you please make an SVG of the Scottish version too? Same idea, different crown. (I wonder if it will appear on Scottish postboxes, unlike the QEII one?) GPinkerton (talk) 23:10, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
The elements of the cypher are different from the version here: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/sep/26/king-charles-iiis-official-monogram-design-released-by-palace Can you explain why you think the file should not be amended to match that graphic? Also, do these elements not match the threshold of originality in the UK? Do you own the copyright to this particular arrangement of these elements? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 23:26, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Koavf: In heraldry, elements do not need to be exactly the same across renditions. Heraldic elements follow what is called a blazon, or a description, and any image that follows that description is correct. For example, the crown used is the Tudor crown, and it doesn't need to have the ermine spots follow the same direction etc as long as it is the same object described. See Template:Coa blazon. As far as copyright, the arrangement of letters is simply an application of text, which cannot be copyrighted in the United States. Wikimedia Commons servers are in the USA, so they follow USA copyright law regarding things such as threshold of originality. See File:Cyberpunk 2077 logo US Copyright Office decision.pdf for how the US doesn't protect text images regardless of complexity under copyright law. Di (they-them) (talk) 23:35, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
- "Wikimedia Commons servers are in the USA, so they follow USA copyright law regarding things such as threshold of originality." This is not true, see (e.g.): Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory/United_Kingdom#Threshold_of_originality. Please familiarize yourself with our copyright policies, as files must have acceptable licenses or copyright statuses both in the United States and in its place of origin, if that is not the States. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 23:38, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

House of Savoy coats of arms
Hi Di, how are you? I wish you well. I'll come back to make you an old proposal, that of modernizing some of the Savoy coats of arms. I saw that you made some other coat of arms, as usual very well, and I wanted to reproduce some others below. I hope with this request not to disturb you excessively. Thanks in advance and let me know!
