Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 05:45, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Also habe ich hinter Dir hergeräumt.
Dies nennt man Wikiprinzip.
:-) —DerHexer (Talk) 22:37, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Ship
[edit]Guten Tag, DerHexer!
Just for information: ship named "Agat". Correct category is MS Agat (added now).
For a ship identification good way is search by IMO number.

- Yes, thanks. It was clear on File:Żegluga Gdańska in Hel.jpg but on File:Żegluga Gdańska in Hel, part 2.jpg I neither was able to see the name nor to remember if it was the same ship. But the IMO numbers are the same, shame on me, I could have seen that (but it still could have been the number of ship class or whatsoever, well …). ;o) Thanks again and kind regards, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:26, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Is it possible for you to protect all of my user and talk pages on wikis other than en.wikipedia? I don't really use them - so although JA's vandalism is therefore rather pointless, it would save you crosswiki sysops some work. Thanks, NawlinWiki (talk) 00:49, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
- I don't think that this would prevent him from doing bad stuff. He would use other pages to link to you. But we of course could protect your pages. Semi? Full? Some pages would need to be created before protecting them. And I don't know if some people would complain that we'd protect on wikis with active sysops (but that would be our problem and not yours). Kind regards, —DerHexer (Talk) 13:50, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, please full-protect my user pages and semi the talk pages. I'm not an admin anywhere but en.wiki (if I was, I could take care of this myself), so I doubt anyone will complain. Thanks so much! NawlinWiki (talk) 14:42, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Roman Emperor in FPC
[edit]Thanks for reviewing "my" Diocletian. I tried different backgrounds because of your comment, but I didn't find something attractive to me. Reds are impossible because of the base, idem for green variations. Greys are bad, because of the marble... Blues would be a nonsense IMO. Kaki, light marroon, softened yellow ? Then it suffers of lack of contrast... Well, it will stay with the black background I'm afraid... I cannot brighten the statue more, because of the risk of loosing details. I'l trully sorry, because I've some others busts like this one to show to you... Anyway, no worries ! Gruesse aus Paris !--Jebulon (talk) 23:51, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Hi,

Ottava Rima email correspondence
[edit]Hi, according to this post of User:Ottava Rima, you are one of 9 users to whom he showed private email correspondence (from me to him). Can you please tell me (i) if this is true, and if it is: (ii) when and how he did this (iii) why you did not feel it necessary to tell me of this breach of trust (iv) what your view of my comments is, since Ottava claims of the 9 users "they agreed that you were defending Fred's action in an inappropriate manner."[3]. Please either email me or respond on my talk page, since I'm asking the other users Ottava has identified and I would prefer not to have discussion scattered on different talk pages. Thank you. - Ottava asked me on IRC if I could help him with an issue. I told him that I'm currently very busy and will read it later (I haven't read everything till now). Afair, he did not quote mails nor IRC discussions but summarized his problem (afair, he mentioned your name just once but I have no idea what he said). I haven't responded to him much. Re: Category:Heritage sites in Israel
[edit]Hi DerHexer,
I missed your message earlier... anyway, in regards to the question, I'm really not sure how this works in other countries, but the whole concept of "heritage sites without known IDs" seems very strange. We have a very specific definition of a heritage site, basically it's a site approved by the National Heritage Site Preservation Society, and one major criterion is that at least one major part of the site was built after 1700 AD. Sites from before 1700 AD are under the jurisdiction of the Antiquities Authority and are antiquities site.
Coming back to IDs however, since Wikimedia Israel (more specifically, Deror and myself) invented the ID system and assigned IDs to all the heritage sites officially approved by the Society so far, by definition there cannot be a heritage site without a known ID. This is why the category seems very strange to me in the first place, but I can imagine that for some countries the situation is different.
Having said that, let me be very clear that all the people who saw your images at Wikimedia Israel thought it was awesome, and the fact that you uploaded more pictures than any Israeli (even if it's for an antiquities site) is amazing. To be sure, next year we will do our best to also include antiquities sites, but getting the cooperation of the Antiquities Authority might prove difficult.

So gesehen hast Du damit vielleicht eine positive Entwicklung angestoßen. Danke fürs saubermachen. -- Rillke(q?) 18:31, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
- Okay. —DerHexer (Talk) 18:33, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

--A.Savin 15:29, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
--A.Savin 17:42, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

[edit]Please try to refrain to nominate too much pictures at once on COM:QIC, as written in the rules.
Please try to also assess images by other contributors. We are all volunteers, and any help is appreciated.
