[edit]I'll see if I can't take care of that in the nearish future. Thanks for the heads up. I can't believe I missed that when I made it. Zellfaze (talk) 20:44, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
- Sure. That won't be a problem. Sorry I haven't gotten around to either of them yet. Work has been, well full of work. Zellfaze (talk) 12:31, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
Spain electricity prod
[edit]Hello Delphi234.
I see you update some electricity production diagrams. I have to update the spanish one, but i don't find the source.
For example, I think the source of green line (renewable) of File:Electricity production in Spain.PNG was here, but it doesn't tally with. Can you tell me the url of the source of this green line (and the other lines perhaps), please ? (sorry for my English)
Thanks a lot, Hawk-Eye (talk) 11:21, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
- They likely did not include any renewables other than wind and solar. Try adding http://www.eia.gov/cfapps/ipdbproject/iedindex3.cfm?tid=6&pid=36&aid=12&cid=SP,&syid=1980&eyid=2011&unit=BKWH and http://www.eia.gov/cfapps/ipdbproject/iedindex3.cfm?tid=6&pid=37&aid=12&cid=SP,&syid=1980&eyid=2011&unit=BKWH
- Nuclear is here http://www.eia.gov/cfapps/ipdbproject/iedindex3.cfm?tid=2&pid=27&aid=12&cid=SP,&syid=1980&eyid=2011&unit=BKWH
- Thermal is here http://www.eia.gov/cfapps/ipdbproject/iedindex3.cfm?tid=2&pid=28&aid=12&cid=SP,&syid=1980&eyid=2011&unit=BKWH
- Hydro is here. Note that pumped hydro is not an energy source and is used to allow nuclear (and wind and solar) to be used, so it must not be added as an energy source. http://www.eia.gov/cfapps/ipdbproject/iedindex3.cfm?tid=2&pid=33&aid=12&cid=SP,&syid=1980&eyid=2011&unit=BKWH Delphi234 (talk) 00:35, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
- Try using this one - non-hydro renewable. http://www.eia.gov/cfapps/ipdbproject/iedindex3.cfm?tid=2&pid=34&aid=12&cid=SP,&syid=1980&eyid=2011&unit=BKWH Delphi234 (talk) 00:37, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
File:US energy consumption 2035-Low Carbon Case.png
[edit]Could you please supply reliable sources for this chart? As it stands, it appears to be en:Original Research. Thanks, Pete Tillman (talk) 03:59, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- That is just a straight line extrapolation of the low carbon case. It is an illustration of the concept. It is not a projection of actual growth/decline, but instead represents the low carbon proposal, a proposal to eliminate coal and petroleum by a certain year, in this case 2030, a popular choice. I can see one error, though, in that it shows a decline in total energy from 2010 to 2015, which I believe is made up for by an increase, not a decrease in natural gas during that period. I will take a look at updating the graph sometime next year or the following, when data for the period becomes available, to fix that error. There is, though, a trend toward decreasing total use of electricity possibly as much as to 50% of what was used in 2000 by 2050, due mostly to efficiency improvements, and the elimination of energy use by buildings. See the book Carbon Free and Nuclear Free, for example. From the birth of this country there has always been a 3%/year growth in total energy use, but whether that will continue is unknown, although there is no harm in drawing a graph to show what it would look like if it did or did not. It is, after all, just an illustration of a concept. The proposal was to eliminate carbon by 2030. This graph just shows what that looks like visually. Delphi234 (talk) 18:35, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply. I replied at en:Talk:Fossil-fuel_phase-out, for a wider discussion. Pete Tillman (talk) 21:38, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
- I can not reply there. Projections are always fantasy. The goal of carbon free and nuclear free is not my idea, it was proposed in 2009 in the Scientific American. I just drew a chart to show what it looks like. It is a fantasy to think that natural gas is going to increase to meet our energy needs and it is not a part of a carbon free proposal. Like I said, I will update the chart next year when new natural gas figures are available. There really though, is nothing wrong with the chart as a depiction of what carbon free and nuclear free in 2030 would look like graphically. Those who would like the chart to become reality can point to it and say, yes this is what I want. There are plenty of other graphs that can be drawn to meet anyone else's preference of what they would like to see. We also have charts that are historical, and those do represent reality, but all of the projections are just ideas. Could we get all of our energy in 2030 from wind water and solar, as proposed in the Scientific American article? Yes, and this is what it would look like if we did. Delphi234 (talk) 19:18, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
- The source of data is EIA for the historical data, and a straight line projection for the 2030 and beyond data. It is possible that solar will catch up with wind and exceed it, but wind has a big headstart in the United States. The ratio of wind to solar is arbitrary, because each can supply all of our energy, although we can get about 8 times as much energy from solar as from wind. The NREL says we can get 49,759,807 GWh/year from wind power and 399,809,888 GWh/year from solar power, over 100 times as much as the US consumes. In 2012 the US consumed 3,686,780 GWh. The actual amount of solar energy reaching the United States, though, is about 100 times as much as the total wind energy. All of the wind comes from the sun, from uneven heating of the surface of the earth. Delphi234 (talk) 19:50, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

[edit]It appears that the data source you used for this chart is incorrect. The best available 2012 data at the moment are the BMU report for 2012 and the AGEB data here in document Stromerzeugung nach Energieträgern von 1990 bis 2012 (in TWh) Deutschland insgesamt of 14.02.2013. Both give 46 TWh for wind and 28TWh for solar, but the second says that's 7.4% for wind and 4.5% for PV, so a total over the year of 11.9%, not 16%. I wondered if you were using IEA data, but it's not updated for 2012 at the moment.
I therefore removed the chart from the page until you correct it. --Jmdwp (talk) 16:52, 10 June 2013 (UTC)
PS : I corrected an error in the above link, also you could redo your month by month graph with the values from here http://www.ag-energiebilanzen.de/componenten/download.php?filedata=1355908229.pdf&filename=StromKJ2012.pdf&mimetype=application/pdf Entwicklungen in der deutschen
Stromwirtschaft 2012 --Jmdwp (talk) 17:27, 10 June 2013 (UTC)
- I will need the monthly data to make the change, not just a total. Anyone can update the graph, though, as it is PD. I have added the data used. The only column that needs to be corrected, probably, is the "Other" column. Delphi234 (talk) 06:26, 11 June 2013 (UTC)
Done. Monthly data has been updated from IEA. The total includes imports and exports, so is lower than the total given other places. Delphi234 (talk) 23:51, 12 June 2013 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks for the great SVG chart.
Can you provide me the sources for the earlier juvenile detention numbers before 1997? I want to link to the sources from the chart description.
I also want to use the sources to update this chart:
Actually, I would like to link to the sources, and let others update the chart. I am not that good at making charts. I am good at finding and linking to sources. --Timeshifter (talk) 15:37, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
- I will look for the ones that I found. In general I am better at making charts than finding sources... So if you want anything plotted just let me know. Delphi234 (talk) 22:30, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. Any links you used to create that data chart below the description part of the SVG page would be appreciated. I will format the links and describe them for readers of the SVG page. This way others can make more charts using those sources, and editors can use the sources as references in Wikipedia articles. Editors need the sources also to justify inclusion of charts in articles.
- Also, could you put something on your user page? That way it won't be a red link in the file history of the charts you create. --Timeshifter (talk) 18:19, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
- I found most of it. I also found a second paper that has data that can be added. I am not sure where the 1981 and 1982 data came from but it could be somewhere in the first paper Delphi234 (talk) 18:36, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

- Wow. Thanks. I have a lot of work to do. I have started downloading and sorting them. I have set up a bookmark folder, and a folder on my hard drive.
- I like having a wikitext chart also on image chart pages. That way I and others can easily fill it in as new data is found. The wikitext table can be adapted for direct use in articles too.
- I help edit en:Help:Sorting. While editing there I recently rediscovered the usefulness of this tool (I had forgotten about it):
- It is an easy online table editor. Paste in the wikitext for any table. It makes it easy to edit the text and links in individual cells of a table. Very useful for quickly finding and replacing numbers in individual cells of a chart table used for creating image charts.
- Do you have a Wikipedia user page? That is something you could link to from your user page here, and get rid of the red link. When I added you as an author in the descriptions of a couple charts here, people have no easy way to contact you due to the red link. They may not bother to look for you in the file history. Especially new readers of the Commons. --Timeshifter (talk) 17:36, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
- I copied all the links over to the file page. There were some duplicates on your list. So the totals are different here and there. File:US incarceration timeline.gif - see its description for some duplicates too.
- I noticed on your user page that it was deleted by admins in the past due to others playing with the page. The admins won't delete your edits.
- Feel free to add more links here, or on the file page, and especially data that was copied from those links. The more specific the better as concerns source. Table number, page number, etc.. --Timeshifter (talk) 23:09, 17 July 2014 (UTC)
Household ownership of firearms and handguns by country and city
[edit]- Ah yes, three times. I doubt I ever created a user page. New readers become old readers fairly soon, and there already is a three way link - user page, talk page, and contributions, in the file history section. Going to someone's user page is not normally as valuable as their talk page and their contributions. As soon as 2013 JV data becomes available I am going to look into expanding the chart back to 1850. Even though JV population has been declining, I did not want to project that, and simply used the same figure for 2012. Right now I am finishing up a handgun vs. homicide chart. I have it ready in English and am working on adding translations. It is for 1992, but that is the only data that I have. Did you see the Firearm vs. Homicide charts? There is a big difference, though, between firearms and handguns. I was able to include all 50 states and 10 other countries in one chart, and the data is fairly interesting. Homicides go up with firearm ownership, as do suicides, but aggravated assault and robbery go down. Rape is unaffected. The US only chart looks inconclusive for homicides, but when you include countries with truly low firearm ownership it shows a trend better. In the old west everyone had a six shooter on their hip. When you go to Texas today, that has been replaced with a cellphone. Hopefully some day that cellphone will be used just as effectively to prevent crime as the six shooter. Especially with cellphones that have cameras and are set up to live stream. "You say you want to rob me? And what was your name? And can I get a good view of your face?" Google glass is even better - but need to have an easy way to disable the record indicator light. Like from a remote control in your pocket that can be discretely pressed to activate live streaming, with the record indicator off. Delphi234 (talk) 23:28, 17 July 2014 (UTC)
- I may check out more of your charts when I get time. There is a chart on this page that may be of interest to you:
- See the section titled something like "% of households by country with handguns and long guns". The chart is for ownership of firearms and handguns by country and city. I used it there under fair use. I wish it were a free image.
- Intense people such as yourself are often moving on to their next project. But could you leave a trail of breadcrumbs for the rest of us to follow please? Maybe link to your talk page from your user page. Lots of news media will be coming to your chart page. They will click the author links at the top. Most news media know that red links go nowhere. That may be all they know about Wikipedia and the Commons. They will want to source the chart stats. The media and activists may want to check up on your other work. Most activists know little about user contribution links, etc..
- I am not sure you realize how important and rare good charts are. I have been passing on charts on the web for many years, and good stuff is hard to find. Especially as a free image that anybody can use. I have already been passing on this chart on thousands of web pages. I am an admin on a couple big wikis, and I also started passing on the chart on Facebook (as a GIF). --Timeshifter (talk) 18:21, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
- I can easily convert the data in[1] into charts. That is just the data that I was looking for, actually, but the most recent is still almost nine years old. I accidentally took out the asterisks which indicate which data is for 2005. Alternatively, the columns 2004-2005 could be split into four columns. Delphi234 (talk) 06:02, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

- I tried creating a table, but it is not very readable. I think it needs to be done in SVG instead of PNG so that it is scaleable. Is this what you are looking for, a table? Delphi234 (talk) 02:14, 20 July 2014 (UTC)
- An image table would be nice too. That way the info will be more likely to be shared. I would prefer a single vertical list. Not wrapped to 2 lists. That way the image is narrower and can also be right floated and put in a right sidebar of images. I do that often. So do many Wikipedia articles. SVG would be great since languages could be changed. Percentages are for households, and not per person. --Timeshifter (talk) 23:13, 20 July 2014 (UTC)
- Great! I would also like that chart rotated 90 degrees so that it can also be used in a right-floating column of images. The percentages are for household ownership, and not per capita. Please indicate that in the title of the chart. --Timeshifter (talk) 23:13, 20 July 2014 (UTC)
- Really? The source is "Table 18 Ownership of firearms and handguns in countries and main cities (percentages). 1989-2005 ICVS and 2005 EU ICS*" I agree that most of the data though of this type, is what percentage of households have a gun. Delphi234 (talk) 02:09, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

Q342. Could you tell me which sort of gun or guns you own?
- <<Int. Code all guns if more than one mentioned>>
- <<Int. Multiple responses allowed>>
- Handgun
- Shotgun
- Rifle
- Air rifle
- Other gun
- Refuses to say
- 9 Don't know
Q343. For what reason do you own the gun (guns)? <<Int. Multiple response allowed>>
- For hunting
- Target shooting (sports)
- As part of a collection (collector's item)
- For crime prevention/protection
- In armed forces or the police
- Because it has always been in our family/home
- Other answers <<specify>>
- Refuses to answer
- Don't know
- I just updated the info on the Table 18 image page in order to clarify the household question:

No go on creating a table in SVG. I will ask if someone else can. Delphi234 (talk) 03:39, 21 July 2014 (UTC)
The answer on creating a table is "You can create tables in the Draw component of w:LibreOffice (copy and paste from Calc or Excel should be possible to some extend). Then export to SVG via File → Export…'. Make sure to set your page size to fit the table in order to avoid huge borders or clean up in Inkscape afterwards. Note however, that tables are not really considered to be in scope at Commons and might get deleted. We even have a template for stuff that should be wiki markup. Might be advisable to upload stuff like that locally at Wikipedia". I am not sure what LibreOffice is, but there is a link that you can follow. So, your best bet if you want a table is to create one yourself locally. Delphi234 (talk) 02:17, 22 July 2014 (UTC)
- There are many image tables used on Wikipedia that are hosted on the Commons. The reasoning in many cases is that the image table is actually easier to maintain in a Wikipedia article. This is because one does not have to keep an article on one's watchlist. I no longer watch many articles because I don't have the time, and I don't want to have to check all kind of edits to see if the table got messed up. So I watch the table on the Commons. It is good that it is on the Commons because others may want the data in order to create bar charts, graphs, etc..
- In this case though, since you have created the bar charts, there is little need for image tables. The wikitext of the tables should be on the description pages so that others can create bar charts, etc.. --Timeshifter (talk) 04:22, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

[edit]Dear Delphi234,
how have generated File:German Wind and Solar 2012-02.png?--Kopiersperre (talk) 20:04, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for asking. I download the data from[2] one day at a time, for actual wind, solar, and >100MW, and then average the quarter hour data for wind and solar to combine it with the >100 MW data, and then plot it. You have to be careful to click on the DE tab to avoid the Austria data. In another chart, I plotted nuclear separately, but to do that I had to use the previous day data[3] and transcribe the data one value at a time, as you have to subscribe to download that data. This website[4] is much easier to use, but does not have hourly data. Delphi234 (talk) 03:46, 19 July 2014 (UTC)
- And may you also publish your plotting script?--Kopiersperre (talk) 09:48, 19 July 2014 (UTC)
- For that I use Open Office, and just create a plot. I then copy and paste the plot into Paint and add the legends. The time is generated using this string: =VALUE(RIGHT(G4;8))+DATE(LEFT(G4;4);RIGHT(LEFT(G4;7);2);RIGHT(LEFT(G4;10);2)) The hourly average uses =(F4+F5+F6+F7)/4 for wind and =(L4+L5+L6+L7)/4 for solar.
- And may you also publish your plotting script?--Kopiersperre (talk) 09:48, 19 July 2014 (UTC)
This gives me something like this:
Time Wind Solar 12:00 AM 8081.85 0 12:15 AM 12:30 AM 12:45 AM 01:00 AM 7802.85 0
- Which I then cut and paste the values only into three new columns, and then sort by the solar column to get rid of all the quarter hour spaces. Then I resort it by time to put it back into proper order so that I can plot it with the >100MW data. Each month is in a separate spreadsheet file, and when I do a new month I just erase the data columns but leave the calculation columns, so it is pretty easy to do. To do a new month, my first step is to create a blank next month from the blank month I already have. For example, in July I have a blank spreadsheet for August, and before I start using it, in August, I will create a blank one for September. It is easier to do that than to delete the data each month. This is what one days data looks like when it is ready to plot: Delphi234 (talk) 14:18, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

Creating charts and graphs
[edit]Most of the ~400 charts and graphs that I have created were done either in Excel or more recently in Open Office, and then copied to Paint to add legends. Early ones used GIF, because it is a lossless compression, but PNG is used now, or SVG. There are several methods used to create the SVG charts, and are covered separately.
- Step One. Find some data to plot. Decide what type of chart to use, X:Y, Bar, Histogram, or Pie Chart, for example. As a last step, document where the data came from in the source section. This is necessary both for fact checking, and so the source can be added wherever the chart is used. Since all of the charts I make are PD, they can be used anywhere, by anyone, without notification or permission. Charts that are an update to an existing chart, though, need to maintain the existing license.
- Step Two. Assemble the data into a spread sheet, and massage it if necessary. Often the data comes from a pdf file, and usually I can copy and paste it into notepad and then import it into Open Office, with relatively little manual editing. Worst case is creating the data from an existing chart, and correlating the pixel location of each data point with a value. To do this I tend to paste it into Paint, and examine the image at maximum zoom (8 times for Paint). Sometimes data just has to be entered one value at a time, which of course if very tedious, and needs to be checked carefully.
- Step Three. Make a chart in Open Office. Set the size to 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, or whatever is appropriate. Set the legend to Bold 12 pt for each axis. If a minor axis is added, set it to a lighter shade of gray, usually Grey 2. An exception is if the major grid is for example 0 2 4 6, or 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, use the same (default) color for the minor grid, if used. Set the colors as desired. Delete unnecessary legends and do not add any titles (most of the time). Titles are added in Paint.
- Step Four. Copy and paste the chart into Paint, using exactly the same size as was used in Open Office (6.40" = 640 pixels). Add legends, fix things like if you are doing a semilog plot, Open Office can not show 0.01 0.1 1 10 100, but either 0.01 0.10 1.00 10.00 100.00, 0.0 0.1 1.0 10.0 100.0, or 0 0 1 10 100, so I usually copy and paste two charts, or even three, and then copy and paste from one chart to the other the 0.01 or 0.1 that I need to use. The font used in Paint is not the same as the ones in Open Office, so it is better to get all of the values looking the same. In some cases I keep only the tick marks, and by hand in Paint add in all of the values. When doing that I try to get them all lined up the same, zooming in to check them and move them as needed. A simple way to start out with them lined up is to add all the values at once, with spaces as needed between each. They tend to never come out just right, and to fix them, select the value to move, and instead of moving it with the mouse, which would move it in two axis, use the arrows on the keyboard to move them only in one axis, one pixel at a time.
- Step Five. Save the file with a descriptive name.
- Step Six. Upload to commons. The name can be changed while uploading. For example, I might not include the country name in the file name while creating the file, but on commons it really needs to be added, to allow distinguishing it from the same chart with data from another country. Change the license as desired. The default is cc3.0, will likely be cc4.0 soon, and my preference is PD, but if you want attribution or have any other requirements, you can not use PD. Add a description, and very importantly, choose appropriate categories. This is essential for multiple reasons. It helps people find your chart and other similar charts, and helps you to see if there is already a similar chart. If there is, in some cases it can simply be uploaded with a new file to add new data. See the guideline on overwriting existing files. A chart can either be dated, in the file name, or undated, in the file name, but still cover a specific date range. If the file name does not include the date, but the chart covers "current plus historical" data, in general it needs to or can be overwritten with an up to date file when new data becomes available. Commons can not have two files that are identical but have different file names, but when a new chart is uploaded, the old one can be re-uploaded as a new file name but with a date in the file name. See, for example, the file File:US gas prices.png. This is created by the US Government, by the EIA, so it is PD-USGov. It is actually two separate smaller GIF images on the website, but is created by zooming in, and copy and pasting the image into Paint, and saving it as a PNG file. There are two versions saved on commons. The current month in an undated file, and each older version is given a dated file name, such as File:US gas prices July 2012.png. That way if someone wants to use the prices at a specific date in time they can, and if they just want a file that automatically gets updated each month, they can do that as well, just by using the image with the undated file name.
- Step Seven. Edit the source information as needed, for example, creating a link to another file that is similar but in a different language, or a different date. In some cases it is helpful to add a table that lists the data that was used. See for example File:US incarceration timeline-clean.svg (an update to an existing chart).
- Step Eight. Add image to where ever you want. Or leave this up to everyone else.
- Step Nine. Data charts that can be updated - update them as new data becomes available. This could be weekly, monthly, or annually, normally.

SVG images
[edit]These are much harder to create, depending on how they are created, but have the advantage for almost every chart that they are scaleable, in a lossless manner. The easiest way I use to create them is in Gnumeric, and simply export them as an SVG. Unfortunately there is little control over legend placement in particular, but they can be created in only a few minutes. To translate to other languages, I use the same chart in Gnumeric, and just change the column headings to change the legend. That leaves only the titles to change manually. I make a list of all the languages and translations so that if the data is updated I can re-create the different language charts easily. An example of this is File:Annual electricity net generation in the world.svg (an update of an existing chart).
The first SVG charts I created, and the method I prefer, is to create them by hand from any similar PD chart that I find, and just change each element by hand. A good one to use for this is File:Global Wind Power Cumulative Capacity.svg because several people worked on it, cleaning up the SVG, and adding multiple languages. I prefer SVG that is created in Notepad, with a scale element that allows the data to be in the chart, in a manner that can be updated easily by anyone. The only difficulty is adding additional years, which may require re-scaling the chart, and recalculating the location of the year legends. I work on each element one at a time. I get the starting and finishing legends located properly, then scale the intermediate ones.
For example, in the above chart, the starting point is 1996 at 18, and the end point is 2013 at 683. To add another year, the chart needs to be scaled slightly differently, but once the end point at 683 was determined, and the starting point was at 18, with 17 dates, divide (683 - 18) by 17 = 39.11. Add 39 to each location, locating them at 18, 57, 96, 135, 174, 213, 252, 291, 330, 369, 408, 447, 486, 525, 564, 603, 642, 683. These were adjusted by hand to 18, 57, 96, 136, 175, 214, 253, 292, 331, 371, 410, 449, 488, 527, 566, 605, 644, 683. With line charts it is easy and convenient, often, to use for example, 2015 as the end point of the chart, so that data for 2014 and 2015 can be later added without any need to change the scaling each time.
There is an odd problem with right to left languages that may need to be addressed, by adding ‎ or ‏ for example to get the percent sign to appear to the left of a number, or something similar. See, for example, the source code of File:World energy consumption by fuel.svg. This was the first pie chart I created in SVG, and hopefully has enough information in the comments to see how to calculate the data points in a spread sheet to create the pie chart.
There are two templates that can be used to create SVG charts. A simple one, Template:SVG Chart, which was used for File:World energy consumption.svg, and a more complicated one en:w:Module:Charts SVG that is under development. In both cases you create a meta source file, which for example, is added to the talk page for the file you are creating, by clicking edit, and then after saving it, the SVG source code is created. I use "show preview" until I am certain that I have created the final SVG code which will be used. I create a local file using Notepad, and preview it either in Inkscape, or in any browser, which is actually better. Wikimedia, though has some rendering errors, so after the file is uploaded, it might not look the same. To create a file name in Notepad it is necessary to put the full filename inside quotes, such as "World energy consumption.svg" or else you will actually create a useless file named "World energy consumption.svg.txt".
Both Help:SVG and the examples at SVG examples are very useful. And of course help is also available from everyone else if needed.

- Feel free to post this stuff on your user page. :)
- Maybe start some pages in this category I created long ago:
- Category:Commons charts and graphs
- Your previous sections higher up would also be good info for others to learn.
- You might link to all your user uploads too from all those pages. Lots of examples of what you are talking about. Also, add a few links to a few charts from your user page and the category pages. --Timeshifter (talk) 00:37, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

Autopatrol given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 06:30, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

SVG problems
[edit]- For some reason the SVG image is not working on Wikia. This happened previously too with another image. I contacted Wikia awhile back, but it looks like the problem has not been fixed on their end. So I substituted gif images on Wikia. See:
- http://cannabis.wikia.com/wiki/File:Children_and_teen_gun_death_rate.gif
- http://cannabis.wikia.com/wiki/File:US_incarceration_timeline-clean.svg
- http://cannabis.wikia.com/wiki/File:U.S._incarceration_timeline_4.gif
- http://community.wikia.com/wiki/Thread:699665
- http://cannabis.wikia.com/wiki/User:Timeshifter/Sandbox_12 - other svg images uploaded around the same time worked on Wikia. --Timeshifter (talk) 00:59, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
- I am not familiar with Wikia, but when you click on the image it works, so the problem might be the Wikia rendering software. I would try playing with size parameters, and things like that. Commons also offers png versions in multiple sizes for all the svg images, so you can use those. There are rendering quirks with svg. I can create an svg using inkscape that looks fine and is total trash when I upload it to commons. And I get surprises sometimes with the font sizes - or positioning. Just recently I had something in Arabic that looks fine in my browser, but when I uploaded it to commons it put things at the beginning of the line instead of at the end. I do not know enough about svg to identify errors or why some things work and some do not. There are svg checkers, but they certainly do not catch everything. They are more like autocorrect, I would say. But if you or anyone can see an error in the svg, feel free to let me know or just fix it and upload a corrected file. But let me know so I can try to not replicate the same error in other images. Delphi234 (talk) 08:28, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
- I notice that the font looks grainy for the country names along the bottom in this version:
- Could that be part of the problem? That is what I get when I click on the image link here:
- I also put a sized image test on that page. It did not work. Click the 500px link on that page. --Timeshifter (talk) 16:23, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
- Can you find an svg image that does work, so that I can compare it with these? I used to include a doctype statement, but per suggestion removed it (it is not used by Commons).

- You can also find one that works and substitute the first few lines from it to the image that is not working - just change the height/width so it is correct. Delphi234 (talk) 17:14, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
- Here are some working SVG images:
- You can create a user page on Wikia on that wiki with just a username (email address optional for password retrieval). This allows you to upload images. You can experiment on your user page with image sizing, formatting, etc.. Wikia regularly screws things up. But if we can figure out the problem I can send them a message about it. You can too once you register a username. Use Special:Contact there to let them know about SVG stuff. --Timeshifter (talk) 18:13, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
- Not really interested in Wikia. But if I can find out something that needs to be done to make images work better there, that can be done. There are differences in the files. One that works is very simple:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="500" height="500"> <path fill="none" stroke-width="38" stroke="#C00" d="M86,88a230,230 0 1,0 1,-1L412,412"/> </svg>
- You might want to try changing 500 to 800 and 600, and using that for the header, and see if that allows the file that is not working to work. --Delphi234 (talk) 22:18, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
- There aren't enough hours in the day. I have to pick what I focus on. I know next to nothing about SVG. I was happy to recently figure out something basic like using the "eraser" and "fill" in Irfanview. :)
- I have figured out some advanced things. That can take some serious time though. You might be interested in the conversion methods here: w:User:Timeshifter/Sandbox44. --Timeshifter (talk) 23:58, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

@Timeshifter: Why do you work in a parallel Wiki and not in the one and only Wiki(pedia)?--Kopiersperre (talk) 22:59, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
- And why am I not working there? I can not even answer there. Why is a long story, but Wikipedia is making a huge mistake by not letting me work there. All I can do is make a list of edits to make, and wait until I can make them. And the list gets longer and longer. Some of the edits get made by someone else, but a large percentage are still waiting to be made. Delphi234 (talk) 23:33, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
- Yesterday, I glanced at some of what got you banned on Wikipedia. I have seen people with indefinite bans allowed to edit again. But they had to ask, and make various assurances. I don't know about the rights and wrongs of your particular situation, and don't have the time to discuss that. But I myself avoid editing certain areas just to keep from wasting time arguing. I leave info and references on talk pages sometimes. And then let the regular editors decide what to do with it. Over time it is sometimes used in some way or another. Or not. I don't stress over it anymore. --Timeshifter (talk) 18:00, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
- I am not banned. Banned and blocked are very different. I am blocked, and an indef block can be removed anytime, and by anyone, as soon as the reason for the block is resolved. Which it has been long ago - and even before I was blocked. Arguing about stuff on Wikipedia is described as "arguing about trivia with morons". There is a huge amount of schoolyard bullying that goes on - all completely unacceptable - and I simply got caught up in it because I quite reasonably I might add, wanted Wikipedia to spell things correctly. But all of that is not an issue that I am interested in any more. I tried and failed. I leave it to someone else to pick up that torch. All I want to do is necessary edits that everyone agrees on. Blocking me today serves no valid purpose, and serves only to hurt Wikipedia. I notice a broken link and it stays broken because I can not fix it, and no one else does. A power plant comes on line and the article stayed saying it was under construction for several months because I could not update it. Data becomes available for a power plant and it does not get added because I can not add it, and no one else notices that it is available. Nothing short of absurd that I am blocked. Delphi234 (talk) 22:19, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
- I should clarify why I don't stress anymore. I noticed after leaving info on talk pages instead of trying to edit contentious articles that I got a lot more done. I realized that when I looked at it from a cost-benefit analysis that more useful info and references got into articles this way. I can leave info on many talk pages, and over weeks and months some of it gets into the articles. By not arguing with the morons, as you say, I had a lot more time to edit the non-contentious articles, and to work on the Commons. I rarely have problems editing on the Commons. The morons on Wikipedia, and there are many in the admin ranks too, think I am a moron too. And so arguing with each other is a pointless lost cause, and ends up being more about our mutual anger than about the facts. So I just leave the facts on the talk page. Since I am no longer involved after that point, some editors who know nothing about me are bound to look at the facts and references objectively. They may be able to get the info into the article without pissing off the people I piss off. By the way, I think this may not be totally correct: "an indef block can be removed anytime, and by anyone, as soon as the reason for the block is resolved." An admin might remove your block, but another admin might put it right back. From what I remember it takes agreement to remove an indefinite block and have it stick. Just my 2 cents. :) --Timeshifter (talk) 06:30, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

- @Kopiersperre. I also edit in Shoutwiki. Wikia and Shoutwiki allow points of view, and I can create articles and wikis about almost anything I want. I see you create charts and graphs too. Check out the sandbox link in my last message to Delphi234. --Timeshifter (talk) 23:58, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Timeshifter: Editing in Shoutwiki is more evolved than me creating user subpages in german wikipedia for pov pages. I just don't like commercial providers.
- I also create some diagrams, but mostly I update old ones.
- Because of you I've read something about the School-to-prison pipeline, which was quite interesting.--Kopiersperre (talk) 09:30, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
- I am glad to hear that you have been updating old diagrams. There are a great many that have been created over the last ten years by editors who long ago stopped editing. I hope that you will take a look at adding German to the svg diagrams in the category:Translation possible - SVG. I have started working on them, using the <switch> tag around the <text>, and moving them into the category:Translation possible - SVG (switch). There are about 5,000 that have been tagged as translation possible, and less than 50 that have had any translations added (not counting the new population pyramids). I recommend adding a small number of translations at first. While it is helpful to add translations for every language where each image is used, that can be quite tedious, and much easier if a native speaker does the translation for each language. Once you add even one other language, adding others is much easier. I started out doing the population pyramids in about 25 languages but that was too slow, so now I am doing them in seven plus the language of that country if I can easily. <switch> is very new and seems to date from about November 2013. To use it in infoboxes you might have to ask an admin to add |lang=xx to the infobox code, which will force the correct translation for that wiki, and have no effect on any other images. That has been done for fr wiki, but will need to be done for all of the other wikis, including English. Delphi234 (talk) 14:21, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

SVG repair attempts
[edit]Using Notepad++ I tried a few of your ideas, and edited the SVG files. With no success so far. I do not know if I tried your ideas correctly. See the numbered variations of this file:
- http://cannabis.wikia.com/wiki/File:Children_and_teen_gun_death_rate.svg - original file unaltered.

They are all in this category for quick, easy access:
Feel free to upload more numbered variations as tests.
I ran your original file through this validator:
It found "9 Errors, 2 warning(s)". I don't know if any of them are the problem or not. That validator is based on HTML 5, and I know that many people are satisfied to meet "transitional" HTML 4.01 standards.
Here is a long list of validators:
I am clueless though about most of the stuff in that validator list: XHTML, SMIL, XML, SVG, etc.. This sounds interesting: "Valid Doctypeless Documents".

- It was done with a blank spot for 2013, so you can add it when it is available. Just open the file in any text editor, and copy the last data line, for 2012, replacing the year with 2013, and the data with the data (in thousands) for 2013. For 2014, the chart will need to be rescaled slightly. Delphi234 (talk) 04:56, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
- OK. Here is the file in question (for others reading this thread):
- File:US Cannabis Arrests.svg --Timeshifter (talk) 06:15, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
- And of course when I said "you can add it when it is available", while I was thinking of "Timeshifter", what it applies to is, anyone reading this, or anyone seeing the image. It is just one of many images that has time sensitive data that needs to be updated periodically, and that updating can be done by anyone. Note to developers: The upload screen has a stern warning to include a license, which is useless and not used. Note to anyone uploading a new version of anything: There is not even any place to put in any license information. The warning, "If you do not provide suitable license and source information, your upload will be deleted without further notice. Thank you for your understanding." DOES NOT APPLY. SVG optimizer found that works
[edit]Original version did not work on Wikia:
I got an altered version of the SVG image to work on Wikia:
Can you make a version of that without transparency?
This explains what I did:
I found this SVG optimizer:
- http://petercollingridge.appspot.com/svg_optimiser - then go to the Javascript version:
I pasted in the SVG code from your original image. Then tried different outputs. Only 2 worked: "Conservative" and "Extreme". Both look the same on Wikia. Had the same transparency problem though. --Timeshifter (talk) 23:26, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
- There are only three differences that I can see. The xml line at the beginning was removed, "px" was added to the svg line, and the % signs removed. Can you try the file with only one of those changes to see which one is the one that is blocking the file from working on Wikia?
My version:
<?xml version="1.0"?> <svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" height="600" width="800" version="1.1" preserveAspectRatio="none" viewBox="0 0 800 600"> <rect width="100%" fill="#fff" height="100%"/>
Your version:
<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" height="600px" width="800px" version="1.1" preserveAspectRatio="none" viewBox="0 0 800 600"> <rect width="100" fill="#fff" height="100"/>
- I never use a transparent background because it always causes problems. All of my images draw a white rectangle for the background, and then build the image. You can remove the transparency either by putting the % signs back in or change the 100x100 background to 800x600. Delphi234 (talk) 06:28, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
<rect width="800" fill="#fff" height="600"/>
- Putting the percent signs back did not help. Changing to 800x600 solved the problem! See file history notes here:
- This did not work here though:
- See the file history.
- So something else the SVG optimizer did matters --Timeshifter (talk) 11:16, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
- Now that you have one that works you can cut and paste sections of it into the one that does not work until you find the line or lines that makes it work. Then put back in everything else to see if that is the only change needed to make it work. And if not, repeat, looking for other changes that are needed. I did notice two other differences. The file that works has these two lines, on line 12 and on line 34. They do not appear to do anything, but could be significant. A capital M takes you to a specific address, a lower case m is a relative move.
12 <path d="m1965 50h49M1965 100"/> 34 <path d="m1965 900v-920M1966 0"/>
- Try changing all the lower case m's to upper case M's in the lines that look like this:
<path d="m1965 50h49"/> <path d="m1965 100h49"/> <path d="m1965 150h49"/> <path d="m1965 200h49"/> <path d="m1965 250h49"/> <path d="m1965 300h49"/> and <path d="m1965 900v-920"/> <path d="m1966 0v-10"/> <path d="m1967 0v-10"/> <path d="m1968 0v-10"/> <path d="m1969 0v-10"/> <path d="m1970 0v-20"/> <path d="m1971 0v-10"/>
- Changing them to ones that look like this:
<path d="M1965 50h49"/> <path d="M1965 100h49"/> <path d="M1965 150h49"/> <path d="M1965 200h49"/> <path d="M1965 250h49"/> <path d="M1965 300h49"/> and <path d="M1965 900v-920"/> <path d="M1966 0v-10"/> <path d="M1967 0v-10"/> <path d="M1968 0v-10"/> <path d="M1969 0v-10"/> <path d="M1970 0v-20"/> <path d="M1971 0v-10"/>
- My guess is that the two changes that are needed is to change 100% to 800 (and 100% to 600), and to change m to M.Delphi234 (talk) 15:17, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
- Out of curiosity I added back all the hidden notes from the original file here on the Commons. See the file history here:
- So hidden notes were never the problem on Wikia.
- I don't see a way in the SVG optimizer to allow comments to remain. The most it will do is substitute <#comment/> for comments (the "None" setting that shows up after pasting in the SVG and clicking the "load" button):
- <#comment/> breaks the SVG image in Firefox. I get this message in Firefox when I click on the resulting SVG image file:
- XML Parsing Error: not well-formed
- Line Number 8, Column 4: <#comment/>
- ---^
- When I removed those particular comment tags, Firefox can view the SVG image.
- So I uploaded that "None" setting image to Wikia (without the broken comment tags) and it worked immediately without further changes!
- I compared the original Commons SVG code with it in a new sandbox. See new sandbox diff:
- The first thing I notice is that, unlike the "conservative" setting, the only thing really changed at the top is the removal of this:
- <?xml version="1.0"?>
- I assume the other changes at the top are not important.
- So something farther down may be causing the problem. I have no clue. I will let you examine this new sandbox diff further before further experimentation on my end.
- The 100% fill version of the "conservative" optimization that had transparency problems yesterday now works.
- <rect width="100%" fill="#fff" height="100%"/>
- I clicked on that version in the file history and it showed up, but it was on a white background page. So I wasn't sure. So I uploaded that version separately and it shows up too:
- So maybe yesterday there was a time lag before the new version showed up. Or I should have maybe done a ctrl-F5 on the page. I don't know. Mediawiki caching can be weird. --Timeshifter (talk) 22:46, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
- So the % is fine, and the m's are fine. Try replacing the lines like this
<text systemLanguage="ar">‎(UCR FBI:الولايات المتحدة القنب الاعتقالات (البيانات</text> with ones like this <text systemLanguage="ar">‎(UCR FBI:الولايات المتØدة القنب الاعتقالات (البيانات</text>
- Maybe it just does not like the ‎ (used in four places). Or can not parse the Unicode. Delphi234 (talk) 22:53, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
- I tried a couple edits of your original file. I just removed the top line <?xml version="1.0"?> and ‎. I uploaded that slightly edited file:
- It does not work. So I am thinking that the format changes in the most basic optimization ("none" setting) are not just cosmetic.
- I could see how formatting might matter with keeping LTR and RTL languages clear. I notice that the optimized version separates language stuff to many more lines.
- I use Notepad++ and until I learned to set it globally (style configurator in settings menu) to use a good unicode font such as Lucida Sans Unicode I had problems editing some things such as wikitext I copied from Wikipedia, Commons, etc.. I couldn't see some fonts without using Lucida Sans Unicode. I see all the fonts clearly in the wikitext of all the SVG arrests files on the Commons and Wikia.
- I also tried removing the additional languages:
- It does not work. So I am thinking the non-language formatting in the most basic optimization ("none" setting) matters. At least on some sites outside Wikimedia.
- The weird thing with all the problem SVG files on Wikia is that they are visible when clicking on the placeholder links on Wikia. The images just won't show up clearly without the formatting. --Timeshifter (talk) 01:19, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
Well the thing to do is start with a version that works and cut and paste into it small or large sections of the original until you paste in a section that makes it not work. Then you can narrow that down to the specific reason it makes it not work. Mostly the "optimizer" just takes out comments and white space, though. But for some reason it likes to put text on their own line. Maybe that is what is making it not work, the formatting of the text elements. Delphi234 (talk) 02:19, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
There is nothing surprising about them being visible when you click on he placeholder link - when you do that you are opening the raw file, whatever format it is, directly into your browser. All modern browsers can render SVG - and do not have as much trouble doing it as Wikia does! There are distinct variations between how a browser renders a file and how Commons/Wikipedia renders it - you can develop a file that looks fine in your browser, but when you upload it into commons it has a problem. Just not as many problems as you are seeing on Wikia. Delphi234 (talk) 04:01, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
- It just gets weirder and weirder. Here is the diff between your original file that still does not work on Wikia (I uploaded it separately again today), and the conservatively optimized file after adding old parts back bit by bit. It looks like some truly minor format changes are responsible for success at Wikia.
- I need to report this to Wikia staff too. Later when I get more time.
- Here is the file that works after adding all the old parts back bit by bit:
- --Timeshifter (talk) 08:15, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
- Is this the only difference?
Does not work: 100 <path d="m1965 0h49"/> 101 102 </g> Works: 100 <path d="m1965 0h49"/> 101 </g>

- Nope. Uploaded it. Didn't work. It's your turn now to try out stuff. :) --Timeshifter (talk) 14:27, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
- Nothing to try - it already works on Commons/Wikipedia. This is a Wikia issue. But what I will do is upload the working version just so that no one else who wants to use it has that problem. But let me know when you find out what the problem is. I count 15 changes between the working version and the non-working version. I am pretty sure that adding a space in front of the comments did not make it work, as only some of them have that. There is also the possibility of hidden characters that are not visible, but hopefully that is not the issue, and I am not sure how they would have gotten into the file - unless they have always been in the file. Can you upload the file this was copied from to see if it also does not work? File:Global Wind Power Cumulative Capacity.svg Delphi234 (talk) 15:06, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

- I have followed your lead, and uploaded the working version with the least changes from your original file:
- I uploaded it here:
- I moved all the test files into this category:
- The main SVG images category is still this one:
- Feel free to run as many SVG tests as you want on the Cannabis Wiki. I am the bureaucrat admin there. Top dog ;)
- You don't have to bother cleaning up or categorizing your tests. I will categorize them in the SVG tests folder, or in subcategories:
- You can create subcategories, too, and move stuff around as you please.
- I sent a message to Wikia about the SVG problems via Special:Contact:
- I linked to this discussion too.

File:Early voting US states.svg
[edit]File:Early voting US states.svg - Would you update it, please? I found a newer map here:
Firefox tells me it is an SVG file being used for that map. Though I am not sure how it is embedded. Beyond me. In Firefox, right click that map and "inspect element".
Maybe you can change it enough to avoid copyright problems, and use it to update the Commons file. I would like to use that SVG map here and there once it is updated. --Timeshifter (talk) 18:09, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
- Data can not be copyrighted. I am not sure how that map is being coded in javascript, but the data can be transferred to the map we have. But lets ask Libertyernie2 if they would like to update it. I tend to hold off on updating images that have been recently updated by someone else. There are plenty to do that are more years out of date. - The original that I used to create that, File:Alcala de Henares (Spain)-demography-fr.svg was in French. I combined the French version with the Spanish version into a new file, and translated it into English to create the new file, which can also be translated into any other language. - Done. Presidents have little to nothing to do with unemployment, but what does? When I look at the image from 1948 to 2014 my only comment is, "well the lights are on, but no one is at home". The Congress, of course, is the only factor that affects the economy - the President can only implement what is passed by the Congress. Presidents do, though, get elected because of the economy (it's the economy, stupid). But clearly not only do we have a completely dysfunctional Congress today, but have never had a functional Congress since 1953, when unemployment was allowed to skyrocket from 2.5% to 6.1% in 1954. You would think the Congress was only working for the millionaires who elect them, and not for the public. Oh wait, that is what they are doing... Delphi234 (talk) 07:48, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks! File:US unemployment rate under President Obama.svg
- I substituted the SVG for the GIF in this article: en:Unemployment in the United States.
- In my opinion economy is simple. Capitalism concentrates wealth. So progressive taxation is a necessity. Along with an adequate minimum wage. If money is constantly recycled by effective, no-loophole progressive taxation, then people have money to spend, the economy works, and unemployment is low. Government spending should be kept to a minimum. So more money goes to individuals to keep the economy running. Exceptions are things such as food stamps, workfare, and single-payer universal healthcare. Single-payer universal healthcare is the most efficient. No one should starve or be unhealthy. Workfare works. When unemployed people do work that the government assigns within their health capabilities. --Timeshifter (talk) 18:00, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

- I could not agree more. We do need a WPA. There is no excuse for anyone to be out of work for longer than a week. But the idea of "requiring work to receive welfare" is only something that someone with rocks for brains would propose. Buckminster Fuller got it right in en:Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth. Just give everyone unemployed a fellowship of about 25% of the median wage (let them keep the first 10% of median they earn, then reduce the fellowship by 50 cents for each additional dollar earned, so that by the time they are making 60% of median they are on their own), and for every 100,000 fellowships, one person will do something that will pay for the other 99,999. It would not even require any additional paperwork to implement it, other than reporting hires/firings - every company already reports quarterly earnings for everyone - and if you are self employed, you have to file that yourself. Right now a large percentage of the population is paid under the table to avoid the FICA tax, but if you were getting it all back because of the fellowship, there would be little incentive to do that. Delphi234 (talk) 21:48, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
- I did not propose it, but I was on it for awhile. Of course many people are too disabled to work at all. And requiring work for them would just be cruel, and a death sentence since they would starve unless they begged, or had someone to take care of them. Bucky's idea would probably save money over workfare since workfare requires a bureaucracy. --Timeshifter (talk) 00:01, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
- As of 2014 that "overhead" is about 70% of the cost of welfare. With Buckminster Fuller's idea that would probably be reduced to about 3%. He also said that computers would replace most office workers, and all the tall office buildings in New York would be emptied of workers and turned into housing (some of it has been), and all of the work they had been doing would be done by a few computers in the basement. There was I think it was a New Yorker cartoon that showed an inventor holding a computer about the size of a pack of cigarettes and saying "You said you wanted a computer that would replace the government?" Sounds like today's smart phone (there's an app for that). But most governments are not really functions, but an excuse to hire government workers, so there is no incentive to reduce that overhead (other than by the taxpayers who have to pay for them). - On the other hand, since 1950, the unemployment rate has always increased if the President was a Republican and has always decreased if a Democrat. All of the Democrats except for Carter have steadily decreased unemployment. Carter fired his entire cabinet in 1979, and perhaps that is why unemployment got out of control then. The Republicans appear to have no interest in unemployment and just let it swing wildly. Delphi234 (talk) 22:11, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

I can't find the wikitext anywhere so far. Please see the note I left at Template talk:SVG Chart. The section currently titled: "Link needs to be removed or updated". --Timeshifter (talk) 08:03, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
- That is created by the template, and is left over from when there was an svg check program on the old toolserver,
which has not migrated to the new toolserver. Delphi234 (talk) 02:12, 11 November 2014 (UTC) - Found it, and fixed it. Delphi234 (talk) 02:22, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks! Where did you fix it? I looked and looked and couldn't find the embedded template, or anything. --Timeshifter (talk) 10:05, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
- It is a complex template, which I belief uses Lua scripting. What you are seeing on the talk page is the result of the template doing its magic. When you click edit, all you see is the source code (sort of the way the computer language Basic works) and a link to the template, which then passes what you typed in as parameters to another template, and so on, until it generates the text that is returned. File:U.S. incarceration rates 1925 onwards.png
[edit]File:U.S. incarceration rates 1925 onwards.png - What is the source for the data for the latest update?
If you add the source data URLs to the source section, someone is likely to clean them up, add labels, etc.. I will do it for any chart or graph on my watchlist. Any source URL is better than nothing. The more URLs the better.
A lot of charts are uploaded but not used much, or not used at all, due to the lack of sourcing. I look for charts for articles, and often give up because I can't find any with sourcing. I have no idea if the chart was made up from nothing, or from bogus data. And those charts are often deleted from articles for the same reason. Some charts start off with great sourcing, but are updated later by others, or the original author. But no sourcing. So what was once a great chart becomes questionable. News media use Commons images more and more. But not unless they pass their fact checkers. At least with the mainstream media. They tend to fact check more. --Timeshifter (talk) 17:22, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
- The URL is not really available, because it was a spreadsheet that is in a zip file, but I added a link to find it and a list of the two files used. Delphi234 (talk) 00:48, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. Perfect. Bureau of Justice Statistics sometimes changes URLs of links to documents on their site, and so the labels and any other info can be very helpful years later. --Timeshifter (talk) 18:05, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
File:Children and teen gun death rate.svg
[edit]File:Children and teen gun death rate.svg - This is the chart that would not show up on Wikia. See tests:
So I ran those 2 SVG checkers from one of the previous talk sections.
One SVG checker (tool lab one) said it was fine. Which it is as concerns Wikimedia. The other SVG checker at File:Test.svg does not show any problems after uploading until one clicks the link for the "W3C SVG Validition Check of this file".
The file is here:

- That is really beyond my understanding of svg. All of the stuff at the top of the file was simply copied from another svg file. But if you can figure out how to make it valid svg that would be nice. See Help:SVG, and Commons:Graphics village pump to find someone who knows a lot more about svg than I do. Counting across though, it looks like it is saying that " is an illegal XML U+0 character. There are a large number of quote looking symbols and this might be one that it does not like, and can simply be replaced with " it that is different. Delphi234 (talk) 01:01, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
- It is baffling to me. I found this:
- One can enter URL of SVG file there and get some results. I don't understand the results though.
- --Timeshifter (talk) 04:33, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
- That appears to be an HTML validator, not SVG. "Error: Start tag seen without seeing a doctype first. Expected e.g. <!DOCTYPE html>" Delphi234 (talk) 14:27, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
After glancing at this page:
I tried something. I removed the top line: <?xml version="1.0"?>
I saved it and the image works in Firefox, though not after I uploaded it to Wikia. I revalidated it here:
This time it said it passed, but with a warning. "This document was successfully checked as SVG 1.1 + XHTML + MathML 3.0! Result: Passed, 1 warning(s)"
I could not find any specific warning info, even when checking the box for verbose output in more options. This may or may not be the warning:
"Notes and Potential Issues. The following notes and warnings highlight missing or conflicting information which caused the validator to perform some guesswork prior to validation, or other things affecting the output below. If the guess or fallback is incorrect, it could make validation results entirely incoherent. It is highly recommended to check these potential issues, and, if necessary, fix them and re-validate the document."
I found this when I searched for "Wikia MathML 3.0" in Google:
- http://htmlcss.wikia.com/wiki/MathML - it says this:
"For valid XML documents as per the W3C specifications, a MathML file must have a <!DOCTYPE> declaration." - It goes on.
But I don't know if you are using any MathML in the file. --Timeshifter (talk) 00:00, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
- I am not sure of the relationship between XML and SVG, but DOCTYPE is found in an HTML (web page) document, not in an SVG document, as far as I can see.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
- seems to just be sort of a lead in and is not closed with a corresponding </xml>, like <svg> is. I would try asking at Commons:Graphics village pump, as I am sure there is someone there who can help. Delphi234 (talk) 00:22, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I need to transfer my questions to Commons:Graphics village pump. I found some more info before I saw your reply. According to w:Scalable Vector Graphics "SVG images and their behaviors are defined in XML text files."
Here is info on MathML namespace:
It says the following namespace would typically be used:
<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML">
I got started on all this when I noticed that this file, File:Map of USA with state names 2.svg, had this banner on its file description page: "The source code of this SVG is valid."
I looked at it again, and I noticed that it names various namespaces at the top:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?> <svg xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:cc="http://creativecommons.org/ns#" xmlns:rdf="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#" xmlns:svg="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns:sodipodi="http://sodipodi.sourceforge.net/DTD/sodipodi-0.dtd" xmlns:inkscape="http://www.inkscape.org/namespaces/inkscape" version="1.0" width="955.48639" height="590.28674"
That is as far as I have gotten. I will ask further at Commons:Graphics village pump. But I may never get around to it. :)
By the way, the validator said your file was using this: "Encoding: utf-16le"
I guess it is due to all the complex languages used in it. --Timeshifter (talk) 00:40, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Many validator problems solved
[edit]Concerning the validator:
I discovered that using the validator with normal Commons SVG URLs is causing many of the HTML errors discussed concerning various images. For example:
The validator is looking at the HTML of that page, not the SVG file. :)
The "original file" link works correctly in the validator:
Then you don't get all those HTML errors in the validator. The only error that shows up is this baffling error discussed previously: "Line 2, Column 39: illegal XML character U+0"
I get the same error when I upload the file directly to the validator. --Timeshifter (talk) 02:34, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
- I left a bug report at the Bugzilla site for the validator:
- --Timeshifter (talk) 03:05, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
- This is strange. Column 39 is " so I changed it to ". No change. So I put spaces around the = sign and the error was still in column 39, but this time the letter v. Delphi234 (talk) 19:58, 23 November 2014 (UTC)

Interlanguage links
[edit]Hello, I noticed an edit you made to Category:Peak Uranium, which removed the interlanguage link, en:Peak uranium
, and replaced it with a different kind of link, :en:Peak uranium
. These two types of links are very different, and serve different purposes, specifically en:Peak uranium is an interlanguage link, which serves not just to link to the article, but also is used by the wiki software to actually associate the category here with the article (or preferably category) on Wikipedia. However, these links are being deprecated in favor of Wikidata associations. There's nothing wrong with adding the other kind of links (they're useful!), but please when you remove interlanguage links, be sure to add the respective Wikidata association, or else let a bot get to it eventually. Adding the association is very easy, just look in the lefthand toolbar, under "In Wikipedia," and click "Add links" which opens up a tool allowing you to easily link the articles. (Of course if you've changed your interface settings this might be different or even absent...) djr13 (talk) 11:40, 11 January 2015 (UTC)
- I just figured the interwiki link was in error. Normally categories need to be linked to categories and pages to articles. A page on Commons about Peak Uranium can be linked to the article on the subject, but not a category. But having a category that says it is only for one article is pretty odd to begin with. Normally Commons files can be used anywhere they are appropriate, and in any language wiki. Delphi234 (talk) 23:37, 11 January 2015 (UTC)
- Right, that's mostly all true, but the associations don't say what the files can be used for, it just (A) helps those looking at the topic on Wikipedia know there exists related media on Commons that they might be interested in, and vice versa, and (B) helps explain the background and context for the subject of the category and the types of images that are probably appropriate to fill it. It is indeed preferred that [Wikipedia articles]↔[Commons galleries] and [Wikipedia categories]↔[Commons categories], but where those ideal associations aren't available at all, it is still useful to associate [Wikipedia articles]↔[Commons categories] as an interim solution pending any expansion of the topic here or on Wikipedia. Also, when you add a Wikidata association, it automatically connects it with the related articles/categories in all languages for which that topic is available. :) djr13 (talk) 03:08, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
- Interwiki links anywhere supercede the wikidata associations, and do not even show up anywhere else. It sounds like you are looking for a commonscat link from the article to the commons category. This goes in the last section of the article, in this case at the very top of the "Further reading" section. Delphi234 (talk) 04:07, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
- Static interwiki links (eg :en:link) don't supercede anything, interlanguage links do. And this is because they were around from before Wikidata, and are now kept only where the associations have not yet added to Wikdata, or where there are exceptional reasons to keep them otherwise. So basically, if you want to remove interlanguage links, please add the relevant (or better) Wikidata association to replace it. If you leave it, another editor or a bot will surely do this eventually. djr13 (talk) 04:36, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
- Feel free to put it back if you think that I erred. What I meant by "interwiki" is "inter language association" - like this en:Uranium, and not "links", like this: :en:Uranium. Both actually do the same thing - provide a link to another location, with the only difference is the former puts it at the left in the list of wikidata links, the latter puts it inline. The former uses the language to show the link, and hides the article linked to, the latter displays the article, unless you pipe a separate text to display. It just seems to me that what you are looking for is the commonscat template in the article. Delphi234 (talk) 05:06, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
- What I'm looking for is Wikidata associations. Removing interlanguage links without adding these associations only forces others to redo all the work that already has gone into identifying related pages on Commons and the various language Wikipedias. Feel free to add interwiki links, but interlanguage links should not be touched unless you actually intend to modify or improve the associations. They aren't simply an alternative optional way to add links. A Commons category can and should have both interlanguage and interwiki links, until the interlanguage link is converted into a proper Wikidata association. djr13 (talk) 05:34, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
- Wikidata is at wikidata:. Adding links there can be a little bit confusing, and the help/introduction files are very rudimentary, but if you go to Wikidata:Project chat someone will be happy to help you. Delphi234 (talk) 06:53, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
- In the meantime, if you do not intend to add these associations to Wikidata, please do not remove interlanguage links. Thanks! djr13 (talk) 09:07, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Wind speeds map request
[edit]Hi, I noticed your Global Annual 10m average wind speeds image. I was wondering whether you would like to make a new "Average wind speeds at 10m" and a new "Average wind speeds at 80m" image. I uploaded these a while back but have been deleted since then since the permissions of these were appearantly not suffient (I had permissions from the authors, but there were still some legal issues). So, if you can simply take over the dots of those maps and put them on a new world map (say https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/14/BlankMap-World-large.png ) that would eliminate those legal issues, and the files can be reuploaded to wikimedia, and benefit the environmental movement.
The maps can still be found at http://windturbineins.com/_literature_64415/Wind_Power_Overview (wind atlas), and I think at some other sites, ... as well.

PS: I also asked Alexrk2; but I'm not sure whether he'll do this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by KVDP (talk • contribs) 15:24, 11 January 2015
- Copying dots is not really something that I would be able to do. Too many dots, and no way to accurately locate them. What I would like to see is a map made from the wind data on this page. https://eosweb.larc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/sse/global.cgi?email=skip@larc.nasa.gov For example the Wind Speed At 50 m Above The Surface Of The Earth. I will ask for this at the Graphics Lab. Delphi234 (talk) 00:18, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

- Done Thank you very much for noting this improvement. It is very important for native speakers to check and note, or make, any needed translation corrections like that. But svg files are just plain text. You can edit them with any text editor that does not insert embedded coding. If you have any question about the modified file working, you can first upload it either to File:Test.svg or to http://tools.wmflabs.org/svgcheck/index.php Delphi234 (talk) 23:17, 11 January 2015 (UTC)
FGM
[edit]Hi Delphi, I like the FGM charts you created. They look better than mine, so thank you for doing that. I'm using the 15–49 one in the FGM article on enwiki.
I have a question about File:Female Genital Mutilation age 0-14.svg. You gave 0.4 and 0.3 for Togo and Benin, though UNICEF rounds those down to 0. Did you take the figures from somewhere else, or did they appear elsewhere in the same document? SlimVirgin (talk) 23:19, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
- It is a spreadsheet, and has the data rounded to the nearest whole digit. Just click on the number to see what the actual value is - or change the rounding to one digit. It is misleading to call it "zero" because there is a huge difference between zero and the actual value. For the rest it is fine to round them off though. But there is in any data an error range, but zero is still not within the range of error. You will note that the actual values were used to plot the svg charts, not the rounded values. Delphi234 (talk) 09:33, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
I never noticed this but my spreadsheet does not correctly round off 0.5 - says it is "1", when values that are exactly 0.5 get rounded to the nearest even value - 0. I guess they are using "grammar school rounding rules". Delphi234 (talk) 09:43, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
Actually I just realized that I had not used the reference given, but instead used SOWC. Or more specifically, the spreadsheet. Delphi234 (talk) 10:22, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Delphi, this is the link I used to the State of the World's Children report, table 9. It gives 0 percent for Togo and Benin. I also see 0 percent in the spreadsheet. One of the problems with these tables is that different software produces different results, depending on whether it rounds up or down. That's why I haven't used the spreadsheets as sources, because our readers need to be able to see the same figures. (I have seen the 0.3 and 0.4 elsewhere, but not in this table.)
- Anyway, thanks again for creating the charts. I'll give some more thought as to whether to round down. SlimVirgin (talk) 18:30, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
- Table 9 is the same table that I used (shown below for countries that have FGM data). It would not make any sense to round down 0.5 to 0 as UNICEF rounds it up in the pdf file. They round down 0.4 and 0.3 to 0 but it just did not make any sense to put that next to two bars that were obviously not zero. Delphi234 (talk) 21:20, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, good point about the bars. SlimVirgin (talk) 00:57, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
- I think it is excellent to add one with the date, but as it looks suspiciously similar, do you mind if I add the source? Delphi234 (talk) 01:51, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, good point about the bars. SlimVirgin (talk) 00:57, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
- Not at all, and I see you've done it. My apologies for that; I should have done it at the time. SlimVirgin (talk) 03:40, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

An SVG map would be fantastic. I update w:List of countries by incarceration rate at least once a year. It would be nice if I could paste a list into the SVG code for the map once a year. --Timeshifter (talk) 12:49, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
- I can do an SVG map. The country color "list" is going to need to be in the form of aliases or something. These are the colors currently used, you can modify them here, and they can be copied to the map. Delphi234 (talk) 13:46, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Delphi234 (talk) 13:46, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
- From w:web colors I selected the following plain and distinctive colors (ones with names) as a possible color list:
- FF00FF Fuchsia >700
- 800000 Maroon >700
- FF0000 Red 500-700
- FFA500 Orange 300-500
- FFFF00 Yellow 200-300
- 7CFC00 LawnGreen 150-200
- 32CD32 LimeGreen 100-150
- 008000 Green 50-100
- 0000FF Blue <50
- D3D3D3 LightGrey no data
I can manipulate the text list of countries and rates to work in the SVG code. See: Commons:Convert tables and charts to wiki code or image files#Conversion examples. --Timeshifter (talk) 20:42, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
- I am going to have to do this in two stages. For now I am just using the original colors, other than light gray, maroon (which I changed to fuchia for better contrast), and red, and coloring the map manually. After that I will go back and create some tables so that the map can easily be updated, and the colors easily modified, one listing the colors, the second one listing the countries. Delphi234 (talk) 02:41, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
Unless I missed any, this is the list of countries in the map. Scotland is combined with England right now. Some of the smaller ones are missing. Delphi234 (talk) 05:04, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

- Fuchsia definitely gets your attention. :)
- I see that you created an SVG map:
- --Timeshifter (talk) 00:23, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
- I am trying to set it up like File:Voter ID laws in the US.svg with the definitions separated into lists. So far I have set up definitions for the colors, so if you do not like fuchia, for example, it is trivial to change it to something else. I also listed the values used in the file. Delphi234 (talk) 08:19, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
- Updating it is pretty easy now, even without putting the countries into a list. Delphi234 (talk) 09:51, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
(unindent). It looks like the countries are in a list now to me. Also, the colors look easy to update. On my computer I tried using just the color names (no hex numbers), and it worked! Fuchsia has to be spelled with the "s" though. I edited the text file with Notepad++.
.r700 { fill: Fuchsia; fill-opacity:1 } /* Fuchsia 700 and over */ .r500 { fill: Red; fill-opacity:1 } /* Red 500 to under 700 */ .r300 { fill: Orange; fill-opacity:1 } /* Orange 300 to under 500 */ .r200 { fill: Yellow; fill-opacity:1 } /* Yellow 200 to under 300 */ .r150 { fill: LawnGreen; fill-opacity:1 } /* Lawn green 150 to under 200 */ .r100 { fill: LimeGreen; fill-opacity:1 } /* Lime green 100 to under 150 */ .r50 { fill: Green; fill-opacity:1 } /* Green 50 to under 100 */ .r1 { fill: Blue; fill-opacity:1 } /* Blue under 50 */ .runk { fill: LightGrey; fill-opacity:1 } /* Light grey No data */
Would it be possible to put the legend on the map itself? I find it hard to look at the map and easily correlate the numbers and the colors. I was using the 2000px version and looking around in depth. In that case there is no legend on the same page to scroll down to. A legend could fit on the left side of the map. 2000px version:
I removed all the extra spaces in the country list and the map still worked. I used find and replace in Notepad++ after selecting the list. I replaced all double spaces with single spaces. I repeated until no more double spaces remained in the list. I can update that list once a year or more. Maybe now. Are those current numbers? Or from 2012? Or? I didn't check. --Timeshifter (talk) 14:45, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
- Current as of yesterday. The first version was from enwiki data, using the higher value for China, the current version is from the referenced website as of yesterday. Yes, color names work the same as either hex or decimal rgb - there are multiple formats that svg accepts. I will add a legend but might leave out gray to avoid having anything that needs to be translated. I am also going to change the ranges slightly - 300, 400, and 600. There is still only one country above 600. The rate in the US is declining and should soon be slightly under 700. There is a group of seven countries with all about the same rate - from 400 to 550. Delphi234 (talk) 02:51, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks! Looks great. I started using it on a wiki farm. Will start adding it to Wikipedia pages tomorrow. And replacing the other maps with it. I see that the country list is no longer in the SVG file. I did not realize before that it was not being used, but was only a comment within the SVG file. It may be difficult to keep the map up to date. With so many countries to check on. Is it possible to create an SVG file based on a list?--Timeshifter (talk) 04:10, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
- Yes and no. That is what File:Voter ID laws in the US.svg does, but it is barely easier to use than this, and still needs a line of code to make it work. There are three things that would help though, list the countries not shown (done), alphabetize the countries, and put the country name on the same line as the color code. But if you put the countries into a spreadsheet and compare the values in the map with the new values it is trivial to see which need to be changed, and change them. I just did a text search for the country I was changing, and it did not make any difference that they are organized by region, instead of in alphabetic order. I think you will find that it is pretty easy to update the way it is now. Alphabetizing the countries in the svg file is a lot of work, without any real benefit. Even putting the country name on the same line as the color code probably takes a lot more time than it is worth. But listing the countries not shown makes updating a whole lot easier. Delphi234 (talk) 07:14, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, I do not know how to use spreadsheets. I guess if I did I could find some function that shows the differences between a current list and the old list posted on the file description page. And then change those entries that also changed colors. Can a spreadsheet tell you what changes have also changed colors? If something could be set up to compare two lists and do all that at once, then that sounds doable. It would be a heck of a lot easier to paste in a list of countries and rates once a year right into the SVG file. If SVG files can be made to create the map on the fly from the list. I bet there are SVG programs that could do that. But then, like spreadsheets, I don't know how to use SVG programs. Inkscape, etc.. --Timeshifter (talk) 01:25, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
- I updated all the English Wikipedia pages I could find that used the old maps:
- File:Prisoner population rate world map.png
- File:Prisoner population rate world 2012 map.png
- Category:World maps of imprisonment and detention rates
- --Timeshifter (talk) 04:34, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
- What I did is copy all the data from the source page into notepad, then import it as a tab separated list into a spreadsheet. In another column I did the same for the data from the image page. I would do both the countries on the map and the ones not on the map, but I would simply delete all the data for the ones not on the map, replacing them with a marker, like XXX. Then I would sort that list by country so that it could be compared row by row with the other columns, from the website that has the data. Then in another column I subract the two columns. Then I replace the result with just numbers, instead of a calculation. Then I sort by the column of data from here, putting all the XXX ones together. Then I sort the ones that do not include XXX by the difference, giving me the old and new values to plot on the map, with a 0 for all the ones that did not change. For the ones that did change I manually make a note of ones that need to have the color changed, and put a marker - 1 - into a sixth column. Then I sort by that column and change those countries. You can do the same thing just by printing out both lists on separate sheets of paper and marking the countries that need to have the color changed on the list from the website having data (the new data). Change those and you are done with the map. Then go through the list a second time marking the countries that have a new rate, and when you are done with that, update the data list on the image page. People have been working with data long before spreadsheets came along. Delphi234 (talk) 04:58, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the how-to. Someday :) , I may dive into some free spreadsheet software, and try to figure it out for a project. This may be one of the first projects I use to learn spreadsheets with. I have w:LibreOffice installed, and it has a spreadsheet program, w:LibreOffice Calc. --Timeshifter (talk) 02:22, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
- I use Open Office now - both for a spreadsheet and as a word processor. I used to use Excel and Word but they are absurdly expensive, Open Office is both free and open source. Gnumeric will export directly into SVG, but is a very primitive spreadsheet, and the charts it creates are also relatively primitive. You will often see someone saying "created with Gnumeric, modified with Inkscape" to get it to look the way they wanted. Mostly I prefer to write SVG by hand, using a similar chart as a starting point. SVG Chart is pretty easy to use, but does have a learning curve to figure out how to use, and has some quirks (surprises too). I often use it as a starting point and then just modify the SVG, for example to use month names for the X axis, or to add translations. You can add something after the Y axis legend, like a % sign, but not precede with anything, like a $ sign, so if I need that I just put it in by hand in the SVG. Delphi234 (talk) 19:06, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
- I noticed LibreOffice comes installed in Linux Mint, which I use on an old computer. I have Windows on the computer I use most of the time. I have both OpenOffice and LibreOffice installed in it. I noticed that LibreOffice opens a lot more old file formats than OpenOffice. That is the only thing I have done with either of those programs in the last few years that I remember offhand.
- This SVG file uploaded fine to Wikia:

(unindent). Here is the message I got back from Wikia:
Hi Timeshifter,
Thanks for the update. Over the past few months we have been switching to a completely new thumbnailer called 'Vignette' - you might have noticed it named in some URLs (e.g.
http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/cannabis/images/3/33/Prisoner_population_rate_world_map.svg/revision/latest?cb=20150204011214 ). We're planning a staff blog post with more details about this new thumbnailer in the near future - and it's very likely that it solved the issue.
I had sent them this message:

--Timeshifter (talk) 10:21, 8 February 2015 (UTC)
I had to revert your upload because: 1) You decentered the map, cutting off the continental outline at left and top. 2) You misaligned the color contours with the continental outline, creating an FGM-free zone of green along Egypt's Mediterranean coast and the Red Sea coasts of various countries, which unfortunately does not exist in the real world. It was this misalignment which created the impression of boundary lines not reaching the border on the West African coast. AnonMoos (talk) 11:59, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
- Interesting. Can you have a try at adding in South Sudan? I have no easy way of drawing SVG lines. Delphi234 (talk) 08:45, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- I really don't see that as a priority, since this is a map of the situation as of ca. 2000, and South Sudan did not exist in 2000. AnonMoos (talk) 13:36, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

I can't edit your diagram. Every try I get This file contains HTML or script code that may be erroneously interpreted by a web browser., although there is no script code. May you change the german translation to <text systemLanguage="de">Abschiebungen aus den USA</text>
and <text systemLanguage="de">Abschiebungen pro Jahr (in Tausend)</text>

- Done. You can try at File:test.svg to try to find out what part of the file was keeping you from uploading it. Delphi234 (talk) 07:32, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks. Maybe I couldn't edit the file because it is UTF16-LE. --Kopiersperre (talk) 21:33, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
- You can change it to UTF-8. I am not clear of the difference. It just can not be ANSI. My choices are Unicode, ANSI, Unicode big endian, and UTF-8. Delphi234 (talk) 00:44, 8 March 2015 (UTC)
- There are also three types of end of line characters used (Windows, Unix, and Apple), which may trash the file for you if you just download and edit the file, so to avoid that I use "view source" which uses my own flavor of end of line character. Delphi234 (talk) 00:52, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

- Dear Delphi234, at File:Homicide and Suicide Rate by Country.svg I've used "View Source" to download the text, but when I reopen the file with Firefox I get

Zeile Nr. 1, Spalte 2:. - Could you please tell me, which browser and text editor do you use?--Kopiersperre (talk) 14:39, 15 March 2015 (UTC)
- That is interesting. Your edited file works fine, and opens in Google Chrome, but not in Firefox. I re-uploaded it so that it will open in both. The one dated 06:19, 16 March 2015 should open in Firefox. I can not tell the difference between the two files, other than the end of line characters are different. I use Chrome, but I notice that Firefox still allows you to use view source to see the file and copy and paste the text into a text editor. I use notepad. I use the browser to preview the SVG, and I can not open the 15 March version into Firefox, but I can into Chrome. So whatever line 1 character 2 is that is causing a problem in Firefox is not a problem in Chrome. As an experiment I opened that file with notepad, made no changes, and saved it, and Firefox could open it. Perhaps if someone has an editor that displays the actual characters in the file they can see what the problem is. I know that many text editors put in formatting characters, but this never came up before with any of the other files. Maybe it is because it was in Unicode? File:Nuclear_fuel_composition.svg opens fine in Firefox, but it is in UTF-8. Maybe there are different versions of the question mark? I know there are different quotation marks. I tend to get ones that do not work out of Open Office Calc and have to change them in notepad to ones that do work. “ does not work, but " does. Delphi234 (talk) 06:55, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
- When I open the 15 March version in Wordpad there is a space after each character. Delphi234 (talk) 17:40, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
- Maybe it's better to quit UTF-16, because not everyone can deal with it.--Kopiersperre (talk) 21:13, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
- Dear Delphi234, at File:Homicide and Suicide Rate by Country.svg I've used "View Source" to download the text, but when I reopen the file with Firefox I get
(moved from User talk:AnonMoos I noticed that you converted this from UTF-16 to UTF-8, and I have been creating quite a few images using Unicode (UTF16), and was wondering if it would be better to use UTF-8? I have been working on a number of images with User:Kopiersperre and they have had trouble with the Unicode ones. I suggested they just convert them to UTF-8, but what editor should they use to do that, and would it be better if I did all of them in UTF-8 (or ANSI if only in English)? Thanks. Delphi234 (talk) 19:41, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
UTF-16 to UTF-8
[edit]A few years ago, files in UTF-16 format wouldn't render at all on Wikimedia (appeared completely blank). That doesn't apply anymore, but it's still best to upload files as UTF-8, because of interoperability problems with different software (as you've seen above) and because UTF-8 files are half the size. I use iconv to switch between the two formats (though the headers of some files may need slight touchup in a text editor after the character set conversion process -- it should be obvious what to do)... AnonMoos (talk) 14:43, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks. I will use UTF-8 instead. Delphi234 (talk) 23:14, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

would you please update your Swanson's law diagrams against File:Price history of silicon PV cells since 1977.svg, which includes newer data?--Kopiersperre (talk) 11:04, 22 May 2015 (UTC)
- I wish to thank User:Rfassbind who has updated some of the files on enwiki that I have not been able to update while I am blocked there. But I need to be unblocked on enwiki so that I can do that myself. I think I will try to create an svg for that image, but in the meantime just updating the png is easier. Thanks for pointing to the updated data.

- Better? The first two were copied from File:World Energy Consumption Outlook 2014.svg and I had taken out the <tspan font-size="20"> element because it was not doing anything in my browser, but it is required by RSVG. The third one had stroke="black" instead of stroke="none", effectively making the text bold. Delphi234 (talk) 15:10, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, thanks. Am I right, that 1 shows, that the reserves-to-production ratio of crude oil is still growing?--Kopiersperre (talk) 16:16, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, but it is a largely fictitious number. Countries just arbitrarily double it occasionally just so they will look good. Countries run out of oil and start using fracking, or switch the definition from "oil" to "liquids" because they are making gasoline from natural gas. The RTP has always been an arbitrary number that just says, well we do have some or a lot of oil, but whether it is a lot or a little is really undetermined. The world ran out of cheap oil a decade ago, and all that is left is stuff that is harder to get out, more expensive, and takes more energy to extract. At some point it will take more energy to get oil out of shale than the energy obtained, and we will still do it, just to keep supplying oil. Right now the US is crowing about being the largest oil producer, but fails to note the RTP of 5 years, meaning it will all come crashing down soon. Delphi234 (talk) 17:52, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

SVG multilingual
[edit]Hello. Can you help me with one file. See the code (I used systemLanguage="ru"
instead systemLanguage="ko"
in Browser for testing without uploading in Commons):
<svg width="19" height="118" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" style="font-size:14px;font-family:Arial" xml:space="preserve"> <g> <switch allowReorder="yes"> <text transform="matrix(0,-1,1,0,0,0)" x="-113.8" y="14.7"> <tspan systemLanguage="az">Albaniya</tspan> <tspan systemLanguage="ca">Albània</tspan> <tspan systemLanguage="bs">Albanija</tspan> <tspan systemLanguage="cs">Albánie</tspan> <tspan systemLanguage="da">Albanien</tspan> <tspan systemLanguage="de">Albanien</tspan> <tspan systemLanguage="el">Αλβανία</tspan> <tspan systemLanguage="en">Albania</tspan> <tspan systemLanguage="fr">Albanie</tspan> <tspan systemLanguage="gl">Albania</tspan> <tspan systemLanguage="hu">Albánia</tspan> <tspan systemLanguage="hy">Ալբանիա</tspan> <tspan systemLanguage="nl">Albanië</tspan> <tspan systemLanguage="pl">Albania</tspan> <tspan systemLanguage="tr">Arnavutluk</tspan> <tspan style="transform:matrix(0,1,-1,0,0);-webkit-writing-mode:vertical-lr;text-anchor:end" x="-33.8" y="14.7" systemLanguage="ko">알바니아</tspan> </text> </switch> </g> </svg>
This SVG generate text, that written vertically (see for example). But I know that Japanese, Chinese and Koreans use vertically notrotated text like this:
W 이 O R 단 D 어
But my variant rotate korean variant upside down. I think it's all about transform="matrix(0,-1,1,0,0,0)"
that rotates text at 90deg. I tested another form like this transform="matrix(0,1,-1,0,0,0)" style="-webkit-writing-mode:vertical-lr;text-anchor:end" x="113.8" y="-4.8"
and it rotates korean text correctly.
Can you help me, how to rotate non-korean texts like this, and that the Korean version ignored matrix
(?) and turned in the second variant, and looked unturned to one side (like other language variants), and was written on the standard vertical) like this:
<svg width="19" height="118" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" style="font-size:14px;font-family:Arial" xml:space="preserve"> <g> <switch allowReorder="yes"> <text transform="matrix(0,1,-1,0,0,0)" style="-webkit-writing-mode:vertical-lr;text-anchor:end" x="113.8" y="-4.8"> <tspan systemLanguage="ko">알바니아</tspan> </text> </switch> </g> </svg>
If I used both <text>
, then all SVG-fie brokes and I don't know why. I think tspan doesn't support transform
in <tspan>
block, and I don't know why too. I don't know SVG at well, but maybe you can help me. Thanks. ← Aléxi̱s Spoudaíos talkrus? 08:22, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
- The approach that I would use is to use
<svg width="19" height="118" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" style="font-size:14px;font-family:Arial" xml:space="preserve"> <g> <switch allowReorder="yes" transform="matrix(0,-1,1,0,0,0) translate(-113.8,14.7)"> <text systemLanguage="az">Albaniya</text> <text systemLanguage="ca">Albània</text> <text systemLanguage="bs">Albanija</text> <text systemLanguage="cs">Albánie</text> <text systemLanguage="da">Albanien</text> <text systemLanguage="de">Albanien</text> <text systemLanguage="el">Αλβανία</text> <text systemLanguage="en">Albania</text> <text systemLanguage="fr">Albanie</text> <text systemLanguage="gl">Albania</text> <text systemLanguage="hu">Albánia</text> <text systemLanguage="hy">Ալբանիա</text> <text systemLanguage="nl">Albanië</text> <text systemLanguage="pl">Albania</text> <text systemLanguage="tr">Arnavutluk</text> </switch> <switch style="transform:matrix(0,1,-1,0,0);-webkit-writing-mode:vertical-lr;text-anchor:end;translate(-33.8,14.7)"> <text systemLanguage="ko">알바니아</text> </switch> </g> </svg>
- I have not checked this, but instead of x=, y=, you need to use "translate" or "matrix" inside g or switch. Both do the same thing so only one needs to be used. Most of the files I have created are created as modifications of other files that I have found. I have never tried using switch inside text with separate tspan but do not recommend even trying. As to vertically oriented text, if you look at an old Chinese newspaper it uses vertical text, but modern ones are left to right. See Category:Chinese text Delphi234 (talk) 18:27, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
- I checked your variant. It has not worked. Then I found a couple of bugs in your variant, and fix it. I have achieved the desired result in the test it in browser. But when I uploaded it to Commons and chose the Korean version I noticed that Korean was written not vertically (at the test it was vertically). See the code of uploaded image:
<svg width="19" height="118" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" style="font-size:14px;font-family:Arial" xml:space="preserve"> <g> <switch allowReorder="yes" transform="matrix(0,-1,1,0,0,0) translate(-113.8,14.7)"> <text systemLanguage="az">Albaniya</text> <text systemLanguage="ca">Albània</text> <text systemLanguage="bs">Albanija</text> <text systemLanguage="cs">Albánie</text> <text systemLanguage="da">Albanien</text> <text systemLanguage="de">Albanien</text> <text systemLanguage="el">Αλβανία</text> <text systemLanguage="en">Albania</text> <text systemLanguage="fr">Albanie</text> <text systemLanguage="gl">Albania</text> <text systemLanguage="hu">Albánia</text> <text systemLanguage="hy">Ալբանիա</text> <text systemLanguage="nl">Albanië</text> <text systemLanguage="pl">Albania</text> <text systemLanguage="tr">Arnavutluk</text> </switch> <switch transform="matrix(0,1,-1,0,0,0) translate(113.8,-4.8)" style="-webkit-writing-mode:vertical-lr;text-anchor:end"> <text systemLanguage="ko">알바니아</text> </switch> </g> </svg>
Also would be nice to make a text with the default option (for example, if the language doesn't exist). Because if choose lang=zz
without default parameter the file will be empty. And if you add the line to the other (like this: <text>Default name</text>
), the Korean version will be written overlap of it. It may be better to leave the Korean version as a simple rotated on side text (as others)? ← Aléxi̱s Spoudaíos talkrus? 11:52, 22 June 2015 (UTC)
I upload another variant of file and vertically text with -webkit-writing-mode:vertical-lr
doesn't work. I don't know why.
<svg width="19" height="118" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" style="font-size:14px;font-family:Arial" xml:space="preserve"> <g> <switch allowReorder="yes" transform="matrix(0,-1,1,0,0,0) translate(-113.8,14.7)"> <text systemLanguage="az">Albaniya</text> <text systemLanguage="ca">Albània</text> <text systemLanguage="bs">Albanija</text> <text systemLanguage="cs">Albánie</text> <text systemLanguage="da">Albanien</text> <text systemLanguage="de">Albanien</text> <text systemLanguage="el">Αλβανία</text> <text systemLanguage="en">Albania</text> <text systemLanguage="fr">Albanie</text> <text systemLanguage="gl">Albania</text> <text systemLanguage="hu">Albánia</text> <text systemLanguage="hy">Ալբանիա</text> <text systemLanguage="ko" transform="rotate(180 0 -5)" style="-webkit-writing-mode:vertical-lr;text-anchor:end">알바니아</text> <text systemLanguage="nl">Albanië</text> <text systemLanguage="pl">Albania</text> <text systemLanguage="tr">Arnavutluk</text> <text>Albania</text> </switch> </g> </svg>
But Korean text written in left side with end anchoring. This is incorrect. ← Aléxi̱s Spoudaíos talkrus? 12:24, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

-moz-writing-mode:vertical-lr;-ms-writing-mode:vertical-lr;writing-mode:vertical-lr;
parrametres, but it doesn't work. I don't know. ← Aléxi̱s Spoudaíos talkrus? 12:33, 22 June 2015 (UTC)- My guess is it is simply features that are not supported by Commons, which uses RSVG to convert into a png for display. You can upload the file to File:Test.svg to see how it is rendered, or you can use the toolserver at http://tools.wmflabs.org/svgcheck/index.php I am sure that you can obtain the desired result, it is just a matter of perseverance to obtain the desired results, and a question of finding an easy way to make it display properly. When you view an SVG file in your own browser, it does not always display the same way that it will display after it is uploaded, just because each browser displays it differently. I usually use my browser to see if the file will display properly, but very frequently have unpleasant surprises when it is uploaded to commons that then need to be corrected. By using the toolserver you can avoid these surprises, because it displays the file as it will appear on commons, and will also flag any svg errors or warnings that it finds. But using it is a separate step that I often skip in the hopes that it is not necessary. My best advice is to keep trying and I know that you will be successful. When I see something like
-moz-writing-mode:vertical-lr;-ms-writing-mode:vertical-lr;writing-mode:vertical-lr;
it does not surprise me that RSVG might not support it. While you may find that you are pioneering in a new area, what I always look for is an example of what I want to do so that I can use that success as a starting point. But in return, when you are successful, others will be able to follow your footsteps and create other images using the techniques that you find work. I will be interested in seeing your results, and will try to help any way that I can. Delphi234 (talk) 16:01, 22 June 2015 (UTC)- Thanks for you opinion. - To get a list of all language items for a list, get the list from Wikidata. Look up the Q number, and replace 42 with it in this URL: https://www.wikidata.org/w/api.php?action=wbgetentities&format=xml&props=sitelinks&ids=Q42
- Then copy and paste the page into notepad and do a global replace of ' site="' and 'wiki" title="' and '">' with tabs and then copy into a spreadsheet. Do a sort on the title to eliminate all other lines. I start by adding a column that is numbered 1-end so that after I am done I can put everything back into the original order. A sort on the language will be slightly different from the order used in Wikidata. Delphi234 (talk) 04:30, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
File:US States by Incarceration Rate.svg
[edit]Greetings again. File:US States by Incarceration Rate.svg - I am using this chart here:
- http://cannabis.wikia.com/wiki/Race,_ethnicity,_and_the_drug_war - in the section currently titled "The new Jim Crow".
I don't want to go wider than 500px with that map there, but would like readers to be able to read the legend without clicking the image to enlarge it. Could you increase the text size of it. Maybe move it closer to the map, and increase text size. This way the image will not be wider to accommodate the larger text. --Timeshifter (talk) 05:10, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
- Done --Delphi234 (talk) 07:11, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks! I bumped it down to 450px wide on that Wikia page, and the numbers in the legend are still legible. Even bigger text would be nice, but that may make the map too wide, or not proportional? --Timeshifter (talk) 07:51, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
- I did some surgery with IrfanView and added some text to the PNG chart:

State prisons only. No jail inmates, nor federal prisoners.
- I saved it as a GIF to keep the kilobytes low. You can see it on the article page at 450px wide, or at a larger width here:
- Could you add the text to the SVG chart? --Timeshifter (talk) 09:10, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
- I think I would prefer to do a second map that does include the jail population. Louisiana had over 1.4% of all adults in prison or jail in 2013, but there were eight states at over 1%, all in the south. See Appendix Table 1. Delphi234 (talk) 18:32, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
- See File:US Adult Incarceration Rate by State.svg Delphi234 (talk) 21:28, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
(unindent). I did not immediately notice your additional message with the link to the new map of adult rates. Thanks for the new map!
About the first map: File:US States by Incarceration Rate.svg. I can not tell the difference between two of the shades. For the ranges 551-650 and 451-550. Alabama versus Indiana. I keep my monitor brightness low except when I am watching some videos. Maybe add an additional 1 or 2 more colors in the current map? Or one more color, but with a couple shades of it. Maybe use purple-violet shades for some of the upper ranges. Continue to use black for the topmost range.
Same problem with the 2nd map: File:US Adult Incarceration Rate by State.svg. I can not see a difference in the colors for Texas and Florida even though they are in different ranges.
An idea. Maybe add the federal rate (90 in Appendix Table 1) to the rate for each state in the 2nd map: File:US Adult Incarceration Rate by State.svg. That way it would paint a truer, scarier picture of the total adult incarceration rate for each state. --Timeshifter (talk) 09:42, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
- It is not very likely that federal prisoners come equally from every state, but that would make the total come out right. I looked at the luminosity figures. All are shades of blue, with hue and saturation for all of them 160 and 240, respectively. This is the luminosity, and difference between them for each color.
216 24 250 192 24 350 168 24 450 144 48 550 96 32 650 64 40 750 24 (added in second map)
- This would be the colors if they had a uniform difference of 24 in the luminosity:
- I am not an expert on colors, but I would think that the luminosity is less important than the brightness. Delphi234 (talk) 13:21, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
- 72, 96, 120, and 144 look very similar to me. Very hard to rapidly pick out different ranges. I can't tell the difference between 120 and 144. Or 96 and 120. I just turned up my monitor brightness to the max level. No help.
- I don't understand luminosity, hue, and saturation. I just pick colors and shades from pages like these:
- en:Web colors
- en:Visible spectrum
- http://www.w3schools.com/cssref/css_colornames.asp

Map colors, tooltips, etc.. Smooth continuous spectrum
[edit]I found this world map:
I like how the color spectrum fits the topic. "Go" and "no go" areas. Green for "go". Red for "no go". I also like the legend with the smooth continuous spectrum covering a broad range.
Scroll over the map. Is that tooltip popup functionality possible in a wiki table? I know how to use a map as a clickable table of contents, but haven't looked much for tooltip popup possibilities yet. I found this:
It pointed to these free tools:
- http://jqvmap.com - "is a jQuery plugin that renders Vector Maps." The jQuery page says "jQuery has also been used in MediaWiki since version 1.16."
- jVectorMap - "Many maps of the world, world regions, countries and cities are available for download from this site. All of them are made from the data in public domain or data licensed under the free licenses, so you can use them for any purpose without of charge."
I copied some of the above info to here: Commons:Image map resources. --Timeshifter (talk) 18:18, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

World Incarceration Rates If Every U.S. State Were A Country
[edit]Found this today: World Incarceration Rates If Every U.S. State Were A Country.
Sure would be nice to have a better, more up-to-date graph. With x and y axis numbers clearly marked. Along with grid lines.
Also with the year listed for each entry. Or "U.S. state numbers are for 20** unless marked otherwise". Country data from "World Prison Population List as of Sep 13, 2015. See individual country pages there for year."
Rates should not mix adult rates with overall incarceration rates. --Timeshifter (talk) 15:16, 13 September 2015 (UTC)
- The data from File:US Adult Incarceration Rate by State.svg can be used. It is for 2013, but it uses rate per 100,000 adult population, giving 910 for the US, while File:Prisoner population rate world map.svg uses rate per 100,000 population, giving 698 for the US. To combine them it would be necessary to use the adult population for each country, to avoid comparing apples and oranges. Delphi234 (talk) 18:12, 13 September 2015 (UTC)
- File:US Adult Incarceration Rate by State.svg is a popular map:
- See its "likes" here: https://www.facebook.com/GlobalMarihuanaMarch - scroll down a page or two. :)
- I guess the easiest way would be a spreadsheet with overall state population in one column, and total incarcerated in another column. Then the spreadsheet calculates the overall incarceration rate by state. Then that list of rates could be pasted into the list from the relevant version of World Prison Population List that is closest in year. Unfortunately, I know nothing about spreadsheets. If I had the list of calculated state rates, I could take it from there and create a chart that combines states and countries into one alphabetical list of overall rates. Apples and oranges wouldn't be mixed. --Timeshifter (talk) 11:28, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
- I can do it either way. It will be slightly easier to convert the US figures to per population than the countries to per adult population, which would require looking up more information. I think I should be able to find the population of each state fairly easily. If not, I know that I do have the adult population of every country. Delphi234 (talk) 20:55, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

- I have LibreOffice installed. I use it sometimes to open up csv files, etc.. I don't understand it any further than that though. --Timeshifter (talk) 04:06, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
(unindent). I figured out LibreOffice Calc enough to get the state incarceration rates per 100,000 of all ages. I will email you the 4-column spreadsheet: State, number incarcerated, population, incarceration rate. I did not add in the federal rate. I will add the country rates tomorrow to the list. I updated the country rate page in the last few days: en:List of countries by incarceration rate. --Timeshifter (talk) 23:41, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
- After a cram course in LibreOffice Calc, and copying and pasting between Notepad Light, VisualEditor, LibreOffice Calc, etc. I created a couple more list tables:
- w:User:Timeshifter/Sandbox56 - List of countries and U.S. states by incarceration rate.
- w:Firearm death rates in the United States by state.
- Charts and graphs would be fantastic. :) --Timeshifter (talk) 07:05, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
- I added a second rate column to this article:
- w:List of U.S. states by incarceration rate
- So now it has 2 incarceration rate columns: One per 100,000 adults, and one per 100,000 of all ages. I would like a U.S. map for incarceration rate per 100,000 of all ages. There are some articles it would be better in. Both on and off Wikipedia. For example:

File:Prisoner population rate world map.svg
[edit]I noticed something curious today. When I look at this map:
It only happens when I right-click and view any of the legend versions of that map from the file history. When the minimum font size in Firefox is set to my normal 15 (options, content tab, advanced), then the text in the legend of those map versions is too large and overlaps and extends out of the legend box. It only happens with the SVG image, not the PNG image converted from it. And it only happens when increasing the minimum font size. Just increasing the text size in the other options has no effects.
It does not happen with this map though:
So something in the SVG of those 2 images is different from each other. I suggest using fixed text sizes in SVG images. Not text sizes affected by browser options for text size. --Timeshifter (talk) 19:11, 5 October 2015 (UTC)
- I guess that can be difficult in SVG images since they are supposed to scale. So "fixed" means a different thing in SVG images. --Timeshifter (talk) 15:17, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

Creating temporal population charts using Template:SVG Chart
[edit]This is a tutorial for the steps that I use in creating a temporal population chart for a country or region. The data is from The 2015 Revision of World Population Prospects and downloaded from Population Division Download Files in the file Total Population - Both Sexes using the "Estimates" tab, which has population estimates from 1950 to 2015. The data is in thousands to three decimal places, so is a count of the number of individuals.
For ease of manipulation, a new spreadsheet was created with a separate tab for each country, and the data transposed from a row to a column. The year was put in by hand and the data copied, and then reformatted to be rounded to three decimal places. New columns were created for the years from 1960 to 2015, composed of a column created from the year and a column for the population, divided by 1, 10, 100, 1000, or 10,000 so that the numbers were one or two digits. Rounding was adjusted to allow full one person precision (if by 1000, making millions, to six digits). Those two columns plus a blank column to the left of the year were copied into notepad and the tabs replaced with five blank spaces. This was done for formatting, so that the numbers would be in columns instead of rows when they appear in the talk page for the file. These columns were then copy and pasted into a previous talk page for a chart that was created using Template:SVG Chart. It does not matter which one because it will not be saved, and will only be used to create the formatting. Three things change from country to country. The scale at the beginning needs to set the range for Y that is used, for example for Tunisia, the data runs from 4,176,266 to 11,253,554, so it has been scaled to from 4.176266 to 11.253554, and a range that will include this needs to be chosen. It can either be from 0 to 15, or from 4 to 12, to create a reasonable looking chart. The numbers can either be 4, 5, 6, etc. or 4, 6, 8, etc. in the latter case, or 0, 5, 10, 15, in the former. It is too "busy" a chart to use numbers from 0 to 15 as 0, 1, 2, 3, etc. So the chart is designed in such a way that the data will be displayed in a reasonable manner. There is a second section that needs to be adjusted where the starting number for Y is chosen, the increment, and whether tick marks will be included for sub-intervals that are not numbered. This is selected for each chart and adjusted as needed to come up with a reasonable looking chart. In this case the numbers start at 4, and each one is numbered, 4, 5, 6, etc. The interval and subinterval was set to 1, but instead of removing the subinterval ("YAxisMark2Step"), which as it is the same as the interval is not used, it was left in just to make it easier to use instead of having to add it back in the next time.
Show preview is used to create the SVG code. The file is not saved, because that will be done later, after the SVG has been uploaded, as a new file name. It is easier to create and upload the SVG first than it would be to create the talk page for a non-existent file and then upload the SVG.
The next step is scaling. These charts are created to mimic the PNG files which were created by User:Valérie75 in November of 2004. The same color and symbol was used, and about the same scale. The original charts were 725x426 pixels and all the Template:SVG Charts are 750 pixels wide, so they are scaled to be about 440 pixels high to have about the same form factor. Scaling is done by adjusting the two parameters GraphStretchHeight and GraphStretchWidth. It is recommended that these be from 100 to 300, but numbers above and below that can also be used. The number used though, must be divisible by 10, as the third place is used in one calculation to scale the graph and not in another, so the resulting graph will not be scaled properly, if a number like 213 is used, while 210 will produce a properly scaled chart. So instead of trying to get exactly 440 for the height, many of them are 450 as the choices would be 430 or 450. These charts use only numbers, so no translation is needed, but also it is not possible to put in thousands separators, other than to add them manually.
There are some SVG errors that are introduced by SVG Chart that are removed by hand. Since no text is used, there is only one. By using SVG Check, the generated SVG can be checked. It will show one warning "Line 156: *Warning* It appears you have a trailing space in one of your attributes. With certain attributes, this can cause a rendering problem." This is removed by doing a search for 'x "' and removing the spaces around x, leaving '"x"'. After the file has been checked for errors and looks reasonable, it can be uploaded. First look for other population charts for that country to see if one already exists that can be used. One that has a larger date range, for example from the 1700s to present can not be used, nor one that is from the 1990s, but one from the 1950s or 1960s is close enough, if it is a relatively similar SVG file. Otherwise just create a new chart, and the older PNG file can optionally be tagged with Tunisia population.svg for example.
SVG Chart has some rendering problems that show up in the PNGs that are created, and for these charts some of them can be improved by slightly reducing the font from 75% to 70%, using FontSize = 70 instead of 75.
To upload the file, I first look to see what category it is going to be in, for example Category:Temporal population graphs of Tunisia, and optionally add Category:Diagrams labelled with numbers only. If it is in either the country category or in a "Demographics of" or other category, then the category "Temporal population graphs" needs to be added. After I upload the SVG, I create the talk page and then clean up the description, checking to make sure I have changed thousands to millions if needed, and adding a link to SVG Chart by adding the Generated with Wikimedia SVG Chart section.
While User:Valérie75 was able to generate the PNGs at an interval of one to three minutes, it takes me ten minutes to an hour to do the SVGs. Population data is available for 233 countries and regions. A separate spreadsheet from the same source has population data for males and females in five year age increments which can be used to create Category:Population pyramids, but those were created by hand instead of using a template SVG generator, but a similar process is used - copying the data to a spread sheet, and then scaling the data.

7,500 translations
[edit]This map has 51 elements to be translated and was translated into 150 languages, for a total of over 7,500 translations in one file. It is a project that I started in July of 2015 and did not finish until February 2016. It was such a large project that I stopped even looking at enwiki to see if I had been unblocked there. I was actually unblocked that month but did not find out until November. I figured that if I allowed myself to be distracted it would never be finished. The method used was to create a spread sheet with the 50 states plus Washington DC and copy all of the names from wikidata using the method indicated above. I put each state into a column and reduced the languages translated to a subset. In some cases I worked on a language wiki to flush out the names of each state. Some wiki's had a page "List of states of the United States" and even though they were almost all redlinks they were listed with the state flag for each, which was sufficient. In other cases pages had been created for states but they had not been added to wikidata, and those were mostly found by going to whatever category was used for the states that did have pages. For each language that had a gap on a separate part of the spreadsheet I put that language into a column and next to it the English names for each state and Washington DC, and where ever I was able to complete the list was able to include in the file. Some languages were skipped because only English is used, and including them separately was not needed. Some might have been included anyway, and as other languages are added those can be removed. There are maybe a few dozen languages that had to wait as there were gaps. In two cases an Internet search turned up a list of state names in that language, and that was used. Copying each state into the file was done by making columns that had the bits that come before the language and after the name in the file, and copying everything for that state into notepad and doing a global search and replace to remove the tab spaces so it could be pasted into the svg file. Deletion discussion for File:Ph Ernst (8).JPG
[edit]See Commons:Deletion requests/File:Ph Ernst (8).JPG. I've nominated File:Ph Ernst (8).JPG to be moved to de.wikipedia.org instead, because of the URAA, a stupid copyright treaty that makes some works copyrighted longer in the U.S. than in their original countries. de.wp follows German copyright law, so the file should be safe there. - I am not sure it is much different from what I am doing. I used to be able to go to the Wikidata entry and copy and paste all the entries into notepad and from there into a spreadsheet, usually with minor edits. But now Wikidata is messed up and you can not do that, but there is a way of displaying an unformatted XML page (noted elsewhere on this page) and I use that. So it is pretty much automated anyway. I can do 100 translations about as quickly as 10. I use a spreadsheet to put in the stuff before and after for each line, so I can copy and paste all 100 into the file I am working with just as easily as doing only one. Source data for File:Swansons-law.svg.
[edit]Hi! I appreciate the existence of File:Swansons-law.svg, but it would be more helpful if the data was on the description page. I think I can read it out of the SVG file, e.g., `L 5.369, -0.237` on a log-log scale means (10^5.369, 10^-0.237), which is (233,900, 0.579), which means 234 GWp of shipments, $0.58 per watt--is this correct? I can add it in myself, but I thought it might be easier for you to do. I can't seem to find the source data from the links on the description page, and this really does seem like important stuff. grendel|khan 00:00, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
- That is correct. As a collaborative project it is helpful to have as many people as possible jumping in and updating things. You are correct in reading the data. It was read off of the original image by blowing up the image in Microsoft paint and counting the pixels and interpolating to guess the closest data. Where actual data is listed that is used instead. The data used is not listed because it is a guess, and is only visually similar to the actual data.
- We are sadly low on active contributors, which has leveled off at about 1600 after declining to around 1300 a couple of years ago of those making over 100 edits each month. That is not very many people creating all the charts and images used by up to billions of people. https://stats.wikimedia.org/wikispecial/EN/TablesWikipediaCOMMONS.htm And I have not been able to add anything since October. --Delphi234 (talk) 15:13, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi. I have updated this important graph with the latest data. Thank you for translating its legends and captions recently. Unfortunately, in order to comply with the new NASA data, I have had to alter one of the legends. Therefore, a translation update now needed for the legend 'Lowess Smoothing (5-year)' in one of the switch statements. I hope you can look at this soon (or help me find someone who can), as it is displaying incorrectly in several languages at the moment. Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Nuclear power history.svg
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Nuclear power history.svg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

Dear Delphi234, the original file File:Nuclear Power History.png which you apparently based your work on was subject to a copyleft license (GFDL and CC-BY-SA). Such licenses require that derivative works also use the same license. Would you please update the licensing on your new version to match at least one of GFDL or CC-BY-SA (or both) and acknowledge the original authorship. As the original author, I would ask that the terms of the original license be respected on any derivative works. Thank you. Dragons flight (talk) 14:19, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
Hello Delphi234, you appear to be the creator and supplier of both files File:DJIA historical graph.svg and File:DJIA historical graph (log).svg. Most pages about the DJIA include these graphs, and most state that the graphs are showing the Dow development from 1896 to today, i.e. 2018 (many text-automated using CURRENTYEAR). The problem: the graphs were updated last in 2016, while in the meantime the Dow has reached numbers above 26,000.
I would like to ask you if you are intending to update the graphs anytime soon. I realise that the update could be also be done by others as the svg code is well commented to do so. However, it would still require information about the data source used and some algorithms to speed up the process. I would assume that you are using spreadsheet and formulas in the background to generate some svg code.
Also, I wondered if the data resolution used, practically daily, to plot the graph is really necessary as it makes the file unnecessarily large. In the 10 years of 2000–2010 there are 2500 data points. Maybe 52 weekly max. numbers could be sufficient for the graph. —Pendethan (talk) 16:01, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

Official guideline restricting changes to file licensing
[edit]Hey Delphi234, you made a modification in 2014 [9] to update the official guidelines with the addition that file licenses can not be changed. In your edit message, you mention this is per a discussion village pump. Do you think you can link me to that discussion? The guidelines might need some clarification on how the discussion ended with that resolution. --Elephanthunter (talk) 20:39, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
- Ah, I think I found the conversation here. It looks like the main concern that you are addressing is historical image versions not matching up with the license on the page. So if the licensing change is less restrictive and applies to all historical image versions, it looks like the issues are avoided. --Elephanthunter (talk) 23:23, 22 August 2019 (UTC)
