Migration of Beatrix Potter images to Wikisource

If it proves that this is possible, were you planning to migrate all of them yourself? I don't have a Wikisource account and uploaded 4 of them here, so if they get included in the migration that would be appreciated. BrokenSphere 07:12, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

I intend to upload all the Beatrix Potter images to Wikisource that are compatible with the Wikisource image policy. It seems that on Commons, they have to be PD both in America (which is satisfied by having been published before 1923) and in the original country, which will be satisfied 70 years after Beatrix Potter's death (which occurred in December 1943). On Wikisource, the pre-1923 rule seems to suffice. So it seems permissible to upload all of them except for The Tale of Little Pig Robinson, which was published in 1930.

I've already started. See Cecily Parsley's Nursery Rymes and The Tale of Peter Rabbit, neither of which had any images a few days ago. However, the easiest way for me to do it is to work on one book at a time, go to the Beatrix Potter section at Project Gutenberg, save each image to my disk, and then upload them to Wikisource, giving them names like PeterRabbit1.jpg, PeterRabbit2.jpg, etc. It's pretty certain that any images you uploaded to Commons will be included in what I upload to Wikisource, as I intend to include everything that belongs to her Peter Rabbit series and that's public domain. However, I'll be taking them directly from Gutenberg, rather than from here. I hope that answers your question. Cowardly Lion 16:42, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

I was originally going for book covers to put into Wikipedia, as most of the book articles there don't have them. I could upload them there as fair use just to be on the safe side. BrokenSphere 22:10, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

I presume that they'd be valid fair use in articles about the individual books. I'm not sure what the copyright status would be. As far as I know from looking at licence templates on Wikipedia, Wikipedia would accept as PD images that were published in the US before 1923. A first edition cover from a US edition would then presumably be fine. I don't know about more modern editions. If you look at one like this, the picture of Peter was by Beatrix Potter, but I don't know how much creativity would be considered to have gone into the cover design. Perhaps an image like this or this from the actual content of the book might be safer, and would be equally helpful in illustrating the article. Cowardly Lion 00:30, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
