deletion due to OTRS request

User:Doc glasgow requested I delete Image:Mccartneys.jpg due to an OTRS complaint by the copyright holder. I did so but I'm not sure about this. From what I can see, it seems that the photographer decided to revoke the permission he gave ({{Attribution}} and then {{Copyrighted free use provided that}}) due to some content dispute on en. Olympic Rings

Hello there!

I'd like to see if we can re-open the discussion we previously had on the Olympic Rings. See my last comment for a summary of the problem.

I've spent countless hours removing this image from various pages on the English Wikipedia. I'd like to make sure

a. that the hours spent weren't wasted :o), and

b. that we avoid any potential litigation with this

Since that last message to you, my understanding of copyrights has grown a little bit, but it still seems backwards (and also a little dangerous) to have a free license with restrictions on its use.

Arvil Lavinge image

Hi Cary. I am needing a professional-looking photo of Arvil Lavinge and the one at Image:Avrillavignex.jpg looks just great. To actually use it, however, I am wondering if you would be willing to share a copy of the OTRS documentation releasing it under the GFDL. User:David.Monniaux seemed to have some concern about its licensing, however. At any rate, I am hoping you might help me out, and I'd certainly return the favor sometime. According to our records, and the permissions expressed in the email, this image is available via GFDL, and we assumed good faith when this was received. However, as the original site does not appear to be functioning, and we have no specific contact information for the site owner, we have no easy way of reconfirming this. The problem is not in the documentation, the problem is the email itself, which does not contain the actual email address of the person providing the approval. When this was approved, we were assuming good faith, and under most circumstances it would be acceptable enough--given that the person providing the approval was, in fact, the copyright holder, and may not therefore have been eligible to provide the license. There were a substantial number of permissions provided by the same user at one time, and I did not double check all the original sites for certainty. The site was down when I checked last, and could not see the context of the picture. Given the professional-looking quality of the photograph, it lends an air of incredulity to the original authorization (not on the part of the person requesting the authorization but on the original source, the website claiming to own it. In my experience, website owners who are copyright infringers are all too willing to claim copyright over their stolen images, and then give permission for others to use them with the goal of promoting their website. Call to arms

Hi Bastique. I write to you and all other users listed on the Welcome log helpers list, except for EugeneZelenko this Call to arms. The reason for it is that I have seen very little activity on the project by you. Because of this we have most probably failed to check the contributions of thousands of new users and have not been able to inform them of the practices on Wikimedia Commons in a timely fashion, causing more work for us and the contributor later in the process.

I would like to urge you to make a habit of checking at least 10 or so new user's contributions from the Commons:Welcome log each day you are active here. We welcome about 200 new users with contributions each day and we currently have 19 users on the helpers list. You can find links to some helpful scripts on the welcome log page, that are likely to make your life a lot easier. Re: Kreyol wikipedia

Hi Bastique !

I fully support your intention to revive the Kryol wikipedia, and hope it will succeed. I will think about it in the coming weeks but as my life is quite unstable at the moment I can't guarantee that I will be able to take part in this. Furthermore, I can't write at all in Haitian Creole, only read it, so I don't think I can write much on the Kreyol wikipedia itself. Maybe do some mopping ? If I get the motivation, why not, but I will have to speak French or English with other contributors, and I don't know whether this is acceptable - I have no experience of small wikis !

You may want to have a look at the Louverture project, if you haven't done so yet. This wiki is AFAIK the best "free" resource on Haiti on the net, written in English, often by members of the Haitian diaspora, living in the US. It could be worthwile to contact them and advertise ht.wikipedia... I will see if I know other similar projects. Maybe surprisingly, most resources on Haiti on the Web are written in English and not in Kreyol or in French.

I've worked 4 months in Haiti last summer (from which came my interest towards Haiti) but not anymore. Feel free to keep me informed and to ping me if I don't come back to you !

After a quick look at ht.wikipedia, I think I can do some cleanup & localisation (especially system messages, I've done this extensively in French) ; this would prove difficult without admin superpowers which I've become addicted to :-) Do you think it would be difficult for a non-Creole speaker to get adminship ?
