I happened to see this. @NDP Record Prod (Noël DEPARIS): if you're asking why the deletion tag is there, it was added by a bot because there was no copyright tag provided. If you add one and remove the deletion tag, it will not be deleted. Heavy Water (talk) 17:42, 28 December 2022 (UTC)

Threshold of originality?

Hello AntiCompositeNumber, I encountered this new image while on enwiki, and I was wondering if it would meet the threshold of originality as a corporate logo (it's marked with the standard CC-BY-SA-4.0). Upon comparing it to File:Threshold of originality variations.png, the example for the threshold of originality policy, I was not so sure, but I thought I would ask you. Thank you, Heavy Water (talk) 17:49, 28 December 2022 (UTC)

@Heavy Water It'd probably be PD in the US. It's probably also fine in China, based on COM:TOO China. I'd assume that's the country of origin since that's where w:ZappTax says it was founded, but the headquarters are in Belgium. If Belgium is the country of origin, it may be non-free. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 22:26, 28 December 2022 (UTC)
OK. I found that the oldest archive of their website was in 2018, by which time ZappTax had its logo and was registered in Belgium. That website says that the name Zapptax was trademarked in Belgium, so I'm going to err on the side of caution and guess that the logo was also copyrighted in Belgium.
This deletion request directs us to COM:TOO France and COM:TOO Netherlands; in the Netherlands, it is said, "In any case, excluded from this [copyright] is everything that has a shape that is so trivial or banal, that one cannot show any creative labor behind it of any kind whatsoever", so I think this logo would not meet the threshold in the Netherlands.
In France, however, "French law asserts that a work is copyrightable when it bears the "imprint of the personality of the author". In practice, it depends on the work in question, but this has left the bar quite low for many works where an artistic intent can be shown," so I'm not sure about France. Help

Hi, thanks for your quick response on IRC yesterday and undeleting file. I am once again lost at file File:Holy Roman Empire 11th century map-sl.svg, it was made with same procedures as yesterday (so SVGTRanslation tool and then fixed in Inkscape), but when uploaded it gliched and copied original file. However, when opened from my PC, it is in Slovene. I havne't seen any language switch as at File:Tsushima battle map-sl.svg. Do you have any idea, how to fix them? Thanks in advance, A09 (talk) 10:59, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Need your input on a policy impacting gadgets and UserJS

Dear interface administrator,

This is Samuel from the Security team and I hope my message finds you well.

There is an ongoing discussion on a proposed policy governing the use of external resources in gadgets and UserJS. The proposed Third-party resources policy aims at making the UserJS and Gadgets landscape a bit safer by encouraging best practices around external resources. After an initial non-public conversation with a small number of interface admins and staff, we've launched a much larger, public consultation to get a wider pool of feedback for improving the policy proposal. Based on the ideas received so far, the proposed policy now includes some of the risks related to user scripts and gadgets loading third-party resources, best practices for gadgets and UserJS developers, and exemptions requirements such as code transparency and inspectability.

As an interface administrator, your feedback and suggestions are warmly welcome until July 17, 2023 on the policy talk page.

Have a great day!

Samuel (WMF), on behalf of the Foundation's Security team 23:02, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

Any chance of adding some 'nudge' notifcations to the bot?

Would it be possible for the BOT to send out 'encouragment' notifications for the 2 situations listed below.

If you want to copy edit the notification messages into something suitable for automated use, feel free. ( I note they do need translating.)

1.

There seem to be many djvu (and PDF) files that lack a {[tl|book}} template. Having that template makes it easier for various projects (my use case is Wikisource, where the data from a Book template is used to auto-fill or auto generate parts of an Index: page.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=intitle%3A%2Fdjvu%2F+-hastemplate%3Abook&title=Special:MediaSearch&go=Go&type=other

Would it be possible for your bot to send out a version of {{Addbookdata}} to the uploaders of multipage DVJU/PDF encouraging them to add a suitable {{Book}} template?

2.

I've also noted, that situations where the {{Djvu}} or {{Book}} template has ended up on single page crops, {{Artwork}}, or {{Photograph}}'s

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=hastemplate%3Adjvu+-intitle%3Adjvu&title=Special:Search&profile=advanced&fulltext=1&ns0=1&ns6=1&ns9=1&ns12=1&ns14=1&ns100=1&ns106=1

I'd been manually removing {{Djvu}} from non Djvu items, and leaving {{Msg thisisart}} where I'd encountered {{Book}} on an artwork or photo.

Donald Trump booking photo Fulton County Georgia

Greetings. You marked the referenced photo for speedy deletion, citing "in the normal course of business" does not a free license make. The image was sent out to all news media that requested it, by a state government agency, which has no copyright interests in any of the booking photos. Their phrase "in the normal course of business" refers to the normal course of business for any news medium, and Wikimedia is such a medium. Our "normal course of business" is to provide photos for use in Wikipedia and other projects.

Maybe I'm just not experienced enough to navigate the rules. Please explain how I can cure this issue, as there is no copyright protection or assertion by the State of Georgia, who created the image. Thanks for any help you can offer. Arthur Smart (talk) 01:52, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

@Arthur Smart Copyright protection is automatic unless explicitly waived. As a matter of policy, Georgia does not release government works into the public domain. Wikimedia Commons requires all files be in the public domain or be released so that anyone can use them for any reason and in any manner, including the creation of derivative works. The license provided does not meet the requirements of the Commons licensing policy. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 01:55, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the prompt reply. Are you saying that all news media who publish the booking photos are violating copyright? Arthur Smart (talk) 02:13, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
@Arthur Smart No, it's certainly covered by fair use even if the limited license doesn't apply. Commons doesn't allow fair use claims though. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 02:23, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
Ok. Thanks again. 2600:1700:1C40:5A50:9E24:BA2:60E4:5677 03:25, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

Hello. Your bot seems to recognize {{Remove this line and insert a license instead}} as a valid license because I've never seen the bot add {{No license since}} to file with that template. See also Special:Search/hastemplate:user:AntiCompositeBot/NoLicense/tag hastemplate:"Remove this line and insert a license instead" which consequently gives 0 results. Is this intended, and in that case, why? Jonteemil (talk) 20:54, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

@Jonteemil The bot avoids tagging files that already have deletion tags on them by checking for {{Deletion template tag}}. {{Remove this line and insert a license instead}} contains that marker, so the bot ignores files tagged with it. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 21:09, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
I see, but {{Remove this line and insert a license instead}} isn't a deletion tag, right? Otherwise files wouldn't be in Category:Media uploaded without a license from February. I have now tagged all the files in the category with {{No license since}} but in the future maybe your bot should treat {{Remove this line and insert a license instead}} as not a deletion tag? Jonteemil (talk) 21:16, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
Ping. Jonteemil (talk) 03:17, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
@Jonteemil I don't want to remove {{Deletion template tag}} from the template, because I don't know what might be relying on it. It would be fine if other tools check for presence of a license and absence of deletion tags, but I obviously do not have control over them. I'm also not really interested in writing the code necessary to distinguish between {{Remove this line and insert a license instead}} and "true" deletion templates. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 21:47, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

ACNbot giving me guff

This is a bizarre diff; it's tagging the image for proposed deletion despite the fact that there's a link and the text "CC BY-SA 3.0" in the Permission param of the template. Is this something that can be fixed? JPxG (talk) 07:56, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

@JPxG The text "CC BY-SA 3.0" is not a valid license tag, but {{CC BY-SA 3.0}} is. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 17:10, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
@Mdaniels5757: Surely if there is a bot already parsing the entirety of the page and its structured data (including the string "CC-BY-SA 3.0" being in the "Permission" field), it could be capable of simply amending the template accordingly? JPxG (talk) 20:14, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
@JPxG AntiCompositeBot explicitly does not parse for license templates, it lets MediaWiki do that and checks only for templates. There are too many variations on licenses and license templates to parse for them specifically. The template is required because it contains the mandatory license link required by the license. Adding new pages for AntiCompositeBot to patrol

Hello,

I think the bot you've created that updates and maintains the "Top 200" pages on Commons is incredibly useful, and does a great job. I noticed that these pages: Top 200 images that should use vector graphics and Top 200 alphabet images that should use vector graphics are not being scanned, and I was wondering if you could add those pages to the bot's list? I can also try adding them myself in case you're very busy, but in that case I would still like to have your permission, first.

Best regards, ReneeWrites (talk) 18:55, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

@ReneeWrites I need to do some work on that bot task before it will support adding another report. I'll add it to the list. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 14:55, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

Bot mistake

Hello @AntiCompositeNumber, this file [File:Jacinto Vaz statue at Mandur, Goa.jpg] has been automatically placed a "No Licence Tag" by the bot. The licence seems to be non readable by the bot. Can you fix this from happening again? Rejoy2003(talk) 10:59, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

@Rejoy2003 For photographs of 3-dimensional sculptures, there are two different copyrights we have to consider: the copyright over the statue, and the copyright over the photo itself. The template you used, {{FoP-India}}, only applies to the statue and is not a license for the photograph itself. Because the photo is licensed All Rights Reserved on Flickr, we can not use it on Commons. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 15:03, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
@AntiCompositeNumber I don't understand. If that's the case, the licence is pretty much useless, I assume. Since we need the uploader's permission as well. I guess this template will work well with own works. Will there be a problem if I upload directly to en wiki? Rejoy2003(talk) 15:23, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for noticing the error in my uploads by AntiCompositeBot. All was fixed (I have a new laptop and lost Pattypan uploads settings so the copyright tag was ommitted from the uploading table). I would like to ask you to remove the tags. Thanks! Aktron (talk) 10:23, 24 March 2024 (UTC)

@Aktron ✓ Done You could have removed the bot tags yourself while adding the license. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 20:47, 24 March 2024 (UTC)

The crane in there is not the Farrell 256, which has some red-colored elements at the top of the crane. Rather that is a crane of Seaward Marine , of which I have found almost nothing. I think it's the same one as seen in this video, but I'm not entirely sure. That video showed a marking of "OLM-0026" on it , with the name "Olmsted" in smaller type below it (and something following I can't make out) but I can't find anything under that name online. I think the yellow crane in some shots is working alongside this one (that video has a similar one, which is just a regular mobile crane driven onto a barge). Carl Lindberg (talk) 14:27, 1 April 2024 (UTC)

I've moved it back to Category:Crane barges. I've also had difficulty finding information on the crane barges. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 14:30, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
@Clindberg I've been able to find the barge that the smaller yellow crane is on. According to [1] it's the Hughes Marine Firms "Hughes 2001" under contract to Seward with a Liebherr crane on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1bfrpYZecg&t=77 has a LR 1300 SX model number visible, which matches the 330 ton crane mentioned in [2]. Not sure how to best express that in category form. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 17:33, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
@AntiCompositeNumber Wow, well done. I created Category:Hughes 2001 (ship, 2004). Carl Lindberg (talk) 17:58, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
@Clindberg Looks like the Army Corps had a blue 60' Manitowoc platform ringer crane on a barge at their Olmstead, Illinois project but auctioned it off a few years ago. https://industrialscenery.blogspot.com/2020/03/usace-had-two-60-ringer-cranes.html has some pictures, unfortunately the GSA auction is a dead link. That page has a comment saying that they removed the crane from the original barge, but [3] shows them also auctioning a bunch of barges off too. No idea what Seaward calls the barge, crane, or barge-crane assembly though. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 21:25, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
That must be it. The auction site is here; those photos would be {{PD-USGov-GSA}}. The auction stated the barge was not included, but given that "Olmsted Dam" is the most likely inscription I saw, you do wonder (or as you say, maybe also bought the barge separately, or switched to one they did buy). That would also explain why I can't find much under that old name, since government ships don't need to be registered anywhere, and it may not really be the name. It must have a name now though. Seems like the crane is from 1978, but finding the barge... may be harder. But more to search for, thanks. Carl Lindberg (talk) 23:42, 1 April 2024 (UTC)

Hello AntiCompositeNumber, I see that you're a Commons admin, could you help me double check if this photo qualifies for public domain? I believe it is a screenshot from one of the copies of this video. Thank you. Starship.paint (talk) 14:50, 2 April 2024 (UTC)

How are things going?

Hello my wikifriend...

Just checking in to see how you're doing! Best wishes! Atsme Talk 📧 00:13, 14 April 2024 (UTC)

Hi AntiCompositeNumber, in 2022 you discouraged translation of Commons:FAQ. Is this still valid and/or what was the reason? The page looks OK for translation to me. Raymond (talk) 06:47, 2 May 2024 (UTC)

@Raymond I did that while importing translations as it took me a while, then forgot about it. I've un-discouraged it now. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 20:15, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
@AntiCompositeNumber Thank you very much. Raymond (talk) 20:24, 2 May 2024 (UTC)

Mushroom Observer (MO) bot?

Dear Admin AntiCompositeNumber,

You created a inaturalist bot which works well but am I correct in assuming that it is not possible to create a Mushroom Observer bot to review images like these below which I uploaded because the bot has to log in to the MO website to see the license...unlike flickr or inaturalist or youtube?

There are some good free images from the Mushroom Observer website but if no one can review them than the free images are of no use...due to a possible future license change by the copyright owner. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 02:31, 15 June 2024 (UTC)

Question about license templates and wikidata

Hi! I wanted to find out how many files that was licensed GFDL across all wikis so I started this little project but I found out it was not easy because som many templates exist and not all are linked to Wikidata. So it turned into a projects to link all license templates via wikidata but with hundreds of wikis it will take a lot of time.

So my question is if you know of a way to find the license templates that are not linked to wikidata?

I can imagine it will not be easy because not all license templates are clearly marked as a license template. So I was thinking perhaps any template used at least in one file page could be a substitute for a license template.

I asked ChatGpt and it suggested that I moved all files to Commons to make it easier to find all GFDL files. Sounds easy enough. It only took me 1 year+ to do that to Japanese Wikipedia. So I guess in 114 years all files will be moved. --MGA73 (talk) 14:05, 4 July 2024 (UTC)

There really isn't. A lot of projects use COM:Machine-readable data and can be found that way, but it's not consistent and you'll miss files. Layout templates also will make things more complex, as they will sometimes contain the machine-readable data instead. Figuring out which templates are on Wikidata or not I have no idea the best way to do that. Good luck. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 20:52, 4 July 2024 (UTC)
Thank you! I was afraid there was no easy way. So far I have linked like 100 templates to Wikidata and I also try to add metadata to some of them. But I will surely miss some templates if the only way is to do it manually. If you ever get an idea let me know. Even if you do not get the idea until in 50 years it will still mean I will save 64 years of time :-D --MGA73 (talk) 06:03, 5 July 2024 (UTC)

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
