Harassment of Odder

[edit]

It is essential that you have the right to communicate concerns with other users, and especially administrators, bureaucrats, and other functionaries. However, these, like you and I, are all volunteers, and when "concern" becomes harassment, it can harm the community. Please consider whether your activity with respect to Odder is helping Commons, and please avoid what is inflammatory and gratuitously uncivil.

[1] [2] [3]

[4] [5] [6]. This edit:[7] shows that the de-crat procedure to which you refer in other posts was started by you, apparently without prior discussion, the very thing you are now accusing Odder of repeatedly doing. Only this was more serious, there was much comment in the procedure that the filing was disruptive, and rights removal process almost always is.

  • In the de-crat procedure, you revealed your agenda:

[8] [9] [10] [11] ... and more. Your argument there became repetitive and tendentious. There were valid points made, but you have not accepted the community's decision re Odder, and are continuing to press for it. Drop the cudgel! Good luck. --Abd (talk) 00:51, 15 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If you self-appoint yourself as a mall cop on Wikimedia, do you still get one of those little Segways? Andy Dingley (talk) 12:32, 15 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be foolish if I expected civility as a response to a warning. No, I'm not a mall cop, so I am certainly not a self-appointed one, and I have no Segway. I am merely someone who works in the mall, as a volunteer. And I've warned another volunteer worker about something that someone could call the cops over. Unless asked for more, I've done my job here. There is no threat in the above, it is simply a warning, but I will add that those who wield cudgels often hurt themselves. "My job" is self-appointed, as with almost all jobs done by ordinary users. It's a wiki, right? --Abd (talk) 14:06, 15 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Category discussion warning

Great Western Railway boundary markers has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Warning for gross incivility

[edit]

[13] was beyond the pale. Please stop this, or I will request a block. Thanks. --Abd (talk) 21:39, 18 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Knock yourself out. You're a prime example of the failure of this place: petty little trolls with nothing constructive whatsoever to offer, but awfully busy at sticking your nose in wherever you can. Andy Dingley (talk) 21:59, 18 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Consistent, you are. Your business at [14]? But you don't need to answer me, I'm not the one who will block you. What you write on this page is fluff. What you write elsewhere, stirring up disruption, isn't. You've been warned. I very much dislike seeing users blocked without warning. So cut your own suit, and wear it. You have a lot of experience, and apparently think you are bulletproof. Maybe you are, so good luck with that. Now, back to work. --Abd (talk) 23:00, 18 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What are you _for_? Andy Dingley (talk) 23:19, 18 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Its a beautiful blue and a loverly gold but they are not needed here (if anywhere) and the original is still there. How do we get rid of the ugly ugly things if you won't let them drift off to outer space? Eddaido (talk) 22:22, 22 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to delete them, then delete them. However (as Alan Liefting has recently been pilloried for) removing all categories from an image disconnects it from the organisational tree and just leaves it in limbo. Andy Dingley (talk) 00:51, 23 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Lazy, limbo exactly right place, thought it needed an admin. Nomination for deletion of both now done. Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 04:00, 27 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
They're in-use though, so I doubt this will stick. Andy Dingley (talk) 11:19, 27 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You probably should add your comment to the end of the poll, rather than the sub-section discussing Russavia's contempt for community. Using the support/oppose icons is also not a bad idea. -- Colin (talk) 13:01, 23 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion

[edit]
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Yours sincerely, Gunnex (talk) 16:02, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I recognise your's is the orthodox way in Commons. It assumes / presumes the categoriser knows what they are categorising and that's almost always quite wrong. That's why there is always so much tidying up to be done when self-help is supposed to be the WP way. Irrational I call it, making rod for own back I call it but if (like so many around here) you've spent almost an entire life driving a computer you see things differently I suppose. Cheers, Eddaido (talk) 23:59, 17 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the change. Do we even need Category:Metal sleepers?

I've been poking around in the dark corners of Category:Rail transport infrastructure trying to document some inconsistencies for discussion, and there was something I wanted to ask you in particular about. We have Category:Electrical power stations (rail transport) and Category:Rail transport electrical substations. It looks like, in theory, the first one should cover actual power plants, with boilers and dynamos and whatnot, and the second should cover facilities for AC to DC conversion and voltage conversion. Are there any other categories that might profitably be added? (It might also be nice to move the first category to something more euphonious, like "Railway power houses" or "Railway power stations".)

When I finish working through, I'll put my list of problems and suggestions on Category talk:Rail transport infrastructure and ping you and various other likely people to the discussion. Let me know if there's anything else I should do. Choess (talk) 17:13, 17 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

We don't have a problem with metal sleepers and its three members (cast iron is needed too), but we shouldn't break the useful navigation of sleepers by materials in favour of an obsessive view that nothing can ever be in both a category and a parent of that category at the same time.
I'd be inclined to keep Category:Electrical power stations (rail transport) where it is under Category:Electrical power stations, or whatever the name for electricity generating plants is. That's more useful consistency than trying to name it based on rail infrastructure. However Commons has (of course) done something perversely stupid instead and put it under Category:Power plants by type instead, as if it was a choice between coal, oil and gas turbine. Category:Power plants is then so broad that it lumps electricity generations in with district heating and hydraulic power. We should create Category:Electrical power stations (or some equivalent name). Andy Dingley (talk) 18:52, 17 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I have no problem with it being non-diffusible. If I couldn't handle that, philosophically, I'd be writing tracts for the en-MoS.
I agree that Category:Electrical power stations (rail transport) should be kicked up a level; "by type" is clearly meant to classify on the basis of energy source for the plant. Looking at the contents of the category, though, Category:Power plants is predominantly electrical generating plants, and has a lot of children that would have to be renamed if we created a category for electrical power stations. Maybe it would be better to confine "Power plants" to electrical generating stations, and move Category:District heating plants up to Category:Industry buildings by function. (Also, I have no idea what Category:Thermal power plants is supposed to represent.) Choess (talk) 21:19, 17 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Categories like "Tennis in the 1920s"

[edit]

Any category called something like "Foo in the 2010s" is not a metacategory. It would be a metacat if it were called something like "Foo in the 2010s by year", because that specifies that the contents are grouped by year. You could put a tag like {{Categorise}} on "Foo in the 2010s" to specify that files should go in the specific year cats where possible, but "Foo in the 2010s" could contain 2010s things not identifiable by year.

As an example of why these cannot be metacats, look at Category:Tennis in the 1900s. It contains the image File:A tennis player in Calcutta (c. 1903).jpg. The only date information given for that image is "circa 1903". That fits in "Tennis in the 1900s", even though we don't have a specific year. Another (hypothetical) example would be if there were images of something tennis-related that is known to have existed only during a certain decade, but either didn't have a date specified or was a category containing things from multiple years. That could be a tennis court that was both built and abandoned/destroyed during a single decade, or an organization that was both established and disestablished during a decade.

Even if a "Foo in the [decade]" category happens to contain only categories, that doesn't mean it is a metacat. What determines a metacat is not what is in a category, but what can be in it.

I'm going to take the metacat tags back off the tennis/decade categories. Please don't put them back unless you rename the categories to specify "by year" and remove any files that are in them. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 11:36, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello :-) I wanted to close this discussion and finish this movement, but I have a problem with this category. I don't know where do you want to move it. To a 'Category:Halogen lamps with GU10 screw' or somewhere else? Wieralee (talk) 09:46, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Delete it or leave it, up to you. I've given up on trying to fix the lighting cats, everything just kept getting reverted. Andy Dingley (talk) 12:51, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Russavia's talk page

[edit]

I might agree with you Andy, but as you can see, it was not me who protected Russavia's talk page. You should ask to the admin who did. -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 16:51, 21 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, my watchlist seemed to think it was you. Watchlists aren't having a good week though. Andy Dingley (talk) 17:20, 21 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It's true that it was me who protected Russavia's user page (not talk page), btw. -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 21:26, 21 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, well fill your boots there - there's no reason for anyone to be editing that. Andy Dingley (talk) 21:28, 21 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Andy! Some days ago, you've created the category "Ruined castles". Could you please explain the intended difference between this category and the long-existing category "Castle ruins"? Thank you and kind regards, Sir Gawain (talk) 17:32, 11 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Also we have a well-developed hierarchy under Category:Ruins of castles in the United Kingdom which is a subcategory of Category:Ruins of castles by country. For the Uk at least, I think we should stick with the existing structure and if necessary, merge into it fromthe others. Rodhullandemu (talk) 17:45, 11 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We don't have a category for "Castle ruins", just a redirect. Also in English we use the term "Ruined castles", not "Ruins of castles". Andy Dingley (talk) 10:21, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If Commons is to continue its shift to German, then that's fine, but why continually use German grammar structures with English words? Andy Dingley (talk) 10:21, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
So now there are two different category trees, your Category:Ruined castles with its subcategories and the pre-existing Category:Ruins of castles with its own subcategories. Did you intend a different purpose for the new category, or was it that you just didn't like the old category's name? --YMS (talk) 12:00, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No, I created some categories to categorize new images. As there was no category under the obvious COMMONNAME, I created one. Why are you arguing so keenly to preserve the aberrant wording, rather than fixing it? Andy Dingley (talk) 22:52, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Normally we're correcting the one driver who's riding in the wrong direction than turning around the other hundreds… --Matthiasb (talk) 09:51, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That's the "billion flies" argument. If something is wrong (and this is very much a German language issue), then we fix it according to the objective, independent and external standard, that way it stays fixed long-term. Andy Dingley (talk) 11:38, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, let's move all Images of XY and Pictures of XY categories to Imaged houses and Pictured XY as well… wait shouldn't we think about wether Ruined castle is really the wrong pattern. No doubts on my side, though. --Matthiasb (talk) 12:59, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
By all means think about which one is best per COMMONNAME – I really don't care. If you think that Imaged houses is correct, or that wether means something other than a sheep, then maybe your own language skills aren't the best for this task. Andy Dingley (talk) 14:30, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
As a native UK English speaker who also has knowledge of German, I don't see any merit in a nit-picking difference that will confuse nobody. It seems clear that whatever policies and guidelines apply here, you lack consensus for your version, and I would ask that you accept that, agree to renaming according to consensus, and move on. Cheers. Rodhullandemu (talk) 20:33, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I went ahead and combined the categories (including at least one subcategory) so that everything would be in one place. Whatever you all decide, please just make it one category instead of duplicate ones. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:08, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Invasion of Fishguard images

[edit]
Carngwasted & Ebewalin
Goodwick sands

Hi Andy. Thanks for your interest in this image from the National Library of Wales. I have done some digging and found the first publication of these images in Baker's PICTURESQUE GUIDE THROUGH WALES. Under this images, and the other similar image, it states published as the act directs. May 1st 1797 by J Baker. Later that year Baker also published A Brief Narrative of the French Invasion, see details here. I found one online source that states these images depict French troops landing and not British. Looking at the flags on the original pen and ink drawings (they were colored later) this is distinctly possible - the flags on the two ships are clearly divided into three vertical panels. The flag on the Goodwick sands images is less clear. The images are not printed in context in the volume i have but A Brief Narrative of the French Invasion should have the ansewer, if i can find a copy. Cheers Jason.nlw (talk) 16:00, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting, but there's little I can really add. I can't distinguish any of the ensigns on the ships, although I'd think that the one on land is a white ensign, which accords with British marines. Andy Dingley (talk) 20:07, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
