Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:02, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

File:Capra-young.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

I noticed that you re-reverted the image that I also reverted, but failed to leave an explanation why. As per the deletion request, the image must be cropped to remove the non-free portion of the image to satisfy the image guidelines at commons. Can you please explain your reason for the revert? Dream out loud (talk) 00:30, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
--Alexey2244 (talk) 08:55, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
- The non-cropped version of the photo is non-free and is in direct violation of Commons guidelines. As a Commons user, I have every right to edit content to ensure it meets criteria that is appropriate for the site and do not need consent from the author to do so. Unexplained reversion / Необъяснимая разворота
[edit]Hello. I uploaded a new version of File:Alejandro González Iñárritu with a camera in production Cropped.jpg (derived via a lossless crop of the source file), thereby eliminating the previous version's recompression and faded coloration and adopting an improved composition at the standard aspect ratio of 3:4. I noticed that you reverted this change without comment. Please explain why. Thank you.
I don't speak Russian, but I've endeavored to translate my message through software. I apologize for any shortcomings.

File:Alejandro González Iñárritu with a camera in production Cropped (2).jpg, --Alexey2244 (talk) 10:30, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
- You appear to have misunderstood the situation. File:Alejandro González Iñárritu with a camera in production Cropped.jpg isn't the original photo, and I didn't take that file and modify it.
- The previous uploader created the file by cropping File:Alejandro González Iñárritu with a camera in production.jpg. He/she did so in a manner resulting in generation loss, with unnecessary recompression and color distortion.
- I redid the crop of File:Alejandro González Iñárritu with a camera in production.jpg via a program called Jpegcrop, which preserved the original file's data (including the Exif metadata) without degradation. This eliminated the recompression and color distortion.
- As a Commons administrator, I'm familiar with our guidelines for overwriting existing files. In general, an image should not be overwritten with one containing major differences (such as substantially tighter/looser cropping), and I see that you've rightly reverted several such attempts. In this instance, conversely, the difference between my crop and the previous version is minor (and serves only to enhance the image's composition, not to fundamentally alter its presentation), so it doesn't warrant a separate upload.
- Do you disagree that the difference is minor, or did you revert on the basis that any change in cropping is inappropriate?

[1], [2]. --Alexey2244 (talk) 11:58, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
- Oh, I think that I understand the issue. If the photograph appeared distorted in the two tables, this was because the new version was displayed at the old version's slightly different aspect ratio (a temporary problem that can be rectified immediately by clearing the page's cache). I'll make sure to take corrective action at the Russian Wikipedia without delay.
- Thanks very much!
