Hello, Ainz Ooal Gown/Archives/2019!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

@CptViraj: Thanks, for notifying. I will try to add categories from now on. About the duplicate images, I was transferring US Navy images to Commons and for some reason, the tool didn't warn me that some files are already available on Wikimedia Commons. Must be bug. Sorry. Thanks for uploading File:MollePollie.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:MollePollie.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Hi 大诺史, I am not the one who uploaded the file. I just cropped it. You might want to move this to the original uploader's talk page instead. Masum Reza📞 04:55, 3 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
File:MollePollie.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:David Dewhurst photo.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (:File:David Dewhurst photo.jpg).

If you created the content yourself, enter Own as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, GFDL or Cc-zero to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Images on Bazura page

[edit]

Hi Masumrezarock100

I just received a notice that I've violated copyright by uploading images using wiki commons. If I own the copyright, is it still a violation? Or do I still need to upload it via a different method? I thought I was going about it the right way.

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jerry FM (talk • contribs) 07:13, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

PS: I just realised I've asked this in completely the wrong place. Sorry about that. Not super experienced with the whole wiki thing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jerry FM (talk • contribs) 07:14, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Jerry FM: If you own the copyright of a file, it is not a violation. But we don't have any proof of that. Permissions can be sent to OTRS. Also Fair use is not allowed on Commons, but it is allowed on Wikipedia under a condition that you have to provide appropriate fair use rationale, see w:en:WP:NFUR. Masum Reza📞 07:29, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I see. Sorry, the repeated violations aren't deliberate, I just assumed I'd done it the wrong way in the past. Thought I'd got it right this time! I'm not sure how to prove I own the copyright. Sounds like the best option is to upload it via fair use? Jerry FM (talk) 07:40, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Jerry FM: Yes, like I said you'll need to provide appropriate fair use rationale. But if you are the copyright owner, just sent permission to us via OTRS. But please note that Commons allows anyone to use its files even for commercial purposes. Masum Reza📞 07:45, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Cropped Images

[edit]

Hi, i appreciate your work but it's better to create new file for cropped version (for e.g. File:Aamna Sharif graces Lokmat Most Stylish Awards 2018 (02) (cropped).jpg). But you don't have to create seperate file for minor crop but it's highly suggested when original file has a watermark. If you are using CropTool then you may have notice that there is also a option for that. Thanks! -- CptViraj (📧) 08:32, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi CptViraj, it is always nice to see you. :) I thought it is allowed to overwrite existing files after removing watermarks (per COM:CROP). Regarding the upload of cropped images of Imran Shah, those images have watermarks, so I cropped some of them and overwritten them. As for this one, I only removed blank spaces. Masum Reza📞 08:57, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yeah you're right. Those images have small watermark, my apologize. Regards! -- CptViraj (📧) 10:43, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. :) Masum Reza📞 11:09, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In regards to the accidental moves of all subcategories of Category:Women to Category:Unidentified women

[edit]

This is an apology note to my future self, those who watches this talk page and those who will visit it. I apologise to all of you. I accidentally moved subcategories of Category:Women to Category:Unidentified women. Actually I was trying to move some files to Category:Unidentified women but I clicked on the option "All" by mistake. I understand that it caused a massive damage and I again apologize for that. I reverted all of my edits to the category and mainspace page. Please, please revert the ones, I missed. Sorry for the trouble. Masum Reza📞 21:04, 22 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"Other Versions" and capitalisation in templates.

[edit]

Before you waste too much more time, both of these are unnecessary. "Other versions" means of this image, not of this concept. And the template software is clever enough not to care too much about capitalisation of its fields. Thanks. Rodhullandemu (talk) 13:17, 23 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ah ok. I saw the SVG checker script decapitalizing parameters, so I thought I would do the same. Masum Reza📞 13:20, 23 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Can you do me a favour?

On enwiki, remove the keeplocal tag from all of Locke Cole's uploads. Calvinkulit (talk) 23:17, 25 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Calvinkulit: I wish I could. (: I apparently tried to remove a tag. But that created a huge mess. At first I thought this was my fault that I fail to approach that user in a good way. But it soon turned out to be wrong. That editor apparently has some "behaviourial" problems since 2005. I am sorry but I wish to stay away from that user. In any case, we should not remove keeplocal tags without knowing the reason behind the tags. But they clearly don't wish to give a reason behind their edits. Possibly there is no reason. Who knows? Anyway, the correct procedure in this case would be to nominate their files on w:en:WP:FFD. I currently do not plan to nominate their files on FFD. But that may change in future. However I've seen some problematic tagging, and I will remove those. Also just a piece of advice, stay away from that user if you can. Masum Reza📞 01:24, 26 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Masumrezarock100: I am currently requesting a g-lock. Calvinkulit (talk) 06:32, 26 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Calvinkulit: Accounts are globally locked if they are blocked indefinitely on multiple projects. So I am not sure if a global lock is necessary. Masum Reza📞 07:27, 26 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Surprise!

[edit]

Here's a surprise for you. Calvinkulit (talk) 08:26, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A bit of a sour surprise, but still a surprise I guess. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 08:38, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You should stay away from complicated stuff for now, like asking for rights and stuffs like global lock. You did the same thing to Danny. You should consult an user before asking for rights on their behalf. Instead start contributing to Commons in a good way. Like capturing your own photos and upload them to Commons. And just because you are blocked on en-wiki, doesn't mean that you can not contribute to other projects and Wikipedias in other languages. I've heard that some indefinitely blocked users start contributing to other projects such as simple wiki, and then take the standard offer on English Wikipedia. You can demonstrate that you deserve an unblock like this. Masum Reza📞 11:57, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The file page Test.svg is actually intended for testing whether an SVG is rendered properly and whether certain features (such as switch elements) are working properly. It is not intended for trial-and-error source code editing. You are blocking usage of the page by other users who simply want to test the functionality of their files which normally takes a few seconds only! If you want to find out about the effects of changing the source code, you should save the file locally and use a text editor and your browser or use an external online platform such as https://codepen.io … --Gretarsson (talk) 13:22, 28 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

You have flagged an image I uploaded (Blupi_Icon_512x512.png) and I don't understand why.

I've indicated the license (GPL3, the import tool did not let me choose it) and a link to the Github page saying it's GPL3.

Thank you for your help. Boblafoudre (talk) 22:32, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Boblafoudre: , I flagged the file as "no license" because it didn't have a valid copyrignt tag. On Wikimedia Commons, we use some copyrignt templates to describe a file's copyrignt status. It looks like it should be tagged with LGPLv3. I'll add this tag and remove the no license tag. About the import tool issue, Upload Wizard doesn't let users to upload files with GPL3 license. Warm regards, Masum Reza📞 22:51, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
