Quick question

I'm looking at files presently tagged as lacking evidence of permission, and I came across this one. The source link contains a CC BY 2.0 license, but the (derivative work) crop by the uploader appears to have been plausibly licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. @Red-tailed hawk Hi, I tagged the image as the description credits Grace Villamil, who appears to be a third party photographer (news outlets typically credit both the photographer and itself if it’s a staff photographer).

I see you tagged my photos, and as you can see from the source i've given for my photos, you can see the license is under the "free" catagory. I don't know why you decided to tag my photos without looking at the permission. Also, see this. Summerslam2022 (talk) 16:57, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

@Summerslam2022 The problem with Wallpapers.com is that nothing they host is original work so their claim of free license is pretty meaningless. And a little searching turned up these links. The photos belong to WWE and are not freely licensed.

Thanks for leaving a message here. In a word, yes, you’ve made a mistake with your categories. A good place to start is COM:OVERCAT. What you’re creating is duplication and making the larger categories overcrowded. So for example, since Category:Mohamed Salah is a subcategory of Category:People of Egypt, a photograph of Mo Salah should only be in the first category, not the second. As a general rule, you should not put files in big, general categories like Category:People of Egypt or Category:Businessmen because if you put every image that belonged in there, there would be so many images, it would be impossible to navigate.

@Johnefx You can go to Commons:Undeletion requests and request the image to be undeleted. Since your image looks just like https://www.instagram.com/p/C3DyIZRI5YA/?igsh=dms1aG9sbTF3czMx&img_index=1 but tightly cropped and the background cut out very haphazardly, you’d probably want to present the original high res image with the EXIF metadata. I was one of the photographer in afcon and most of Stanley nwabali's picture was taken by me. And also the Instagram handle you showed was Nwabali himself and most of those pictures was sent to his assistant by me, I don't think is right for you to make your decision only base on assumption. You actually keep taking down my works based on your thoughts and not base on any evidence. Anyway the logo File:BiafraRGIE svg seal.svg was given to me by the original owner, I don't know what evidence you need but do we have to sign any official document before he can give me the logo? Speedy deletion of Flickr images on Commons

Hello and well met. I saw you tagged several of the photos which I uploaded from Flickr earlier with speedy deletion. Can you please help me a little bit more in detail with the copyright issue? I received verbal approval for all of the pictures but I still don't exactly understand what I have to do. I used the same steps CeltBrowne did to upload File:Axel Tischer, June 2022 28.jpg for example. There must be something I missed apparently. Can you give me a hand in here? Thank you. Regards! @JeyReydar97 First off, I was wrong about File:Mao (wrestler), February 3, 2024.png - that one is not a copyright violation so I removed the tag.

Anyway, if you look at the Flickr source for that image ([5]) and for File:Axel Tischer, June 2022 28.jpg ([6]), you'll see that it has a Creative Commons license that allows commercial use and modification. On the other hand, [7], [8], and [9] are marked All Rights Reserved. Copyrighted images like these are not accepted on Commons.

If you have received verbal permission from the copyright owner, they would have to do one of two things:

Change the licensing on the Flickr image to CC-BY or CC-BY-SA (they must allow commercial use and modification, so any license that has ND or NC would not work).
Email the volunteer response team and confirm that they are releasing their work in to the public domain.

As for the File:Mao (wrestler), February 3, 2024.png, it was deleted in the meantime. Do I have to re-upload it or do I have to contact the user who deleted it in order to restore it? @JeyReydar97 Sorry, that shouldn't have happened-I thought I removed the copyvio tag so not sure how it was deleted. Normally, I'd tell you to go through the COM:UNDELETE process, but in this case, I took the liberty of uploading JPEG versions, File:Mao (wrestler), February 3, 2024.jpg and File:Mao (wrestler), February 3, 2024 (cropped).jpg, since you uploaded the image as a PNG file, which "flattens" the image a bit and takes longer to load on Wikipedia.

For future uploads from Flickr, I recommend using the Upload Wizard and using the "Share Flickr Image" function. It's a lot easier since you don't have to download the image to your computer, and it won't upload a file if it has an incompatible license.

@Mr Mines Engine That's actually fine. If you go to the Flickr source page and scroll down to select "License history", you'll see that the photo originally had a Creative Commons license. @Rejoy2003 Sure. The issue is that this image is a photograph within the photograph, so the Flickr user doesn’t necessarily own the rights to the photograph inside the frame. The subject was born in 1904, he looks quite young here, definitely around 30s. Read {PD-India}, works before 1964 are in public domain. You'll have to give me more information. Which specific image are you talking about? Anyway, most of what you find online is copyrighted. "Public use", i.e. anyone can view, isn't the same thing as copyright free, meaning anyone is free to distribute, modify and publish, use it as part of a commercial product, etc. But the best thing you can do is contact the person who tagged the image for deletion (that might be me!). You uploaded them as {{Cc0}} when the flickr license Here and over Here is Public Domain Mark or {{PD-author-FlickrPDM}} So, other users had to correct your mistake. So, when you upload, in future PDM flickr licensed images, please type in {{PD-author-FlickrPDM}} It is not a cc0 license image.

Hi, The file "File:PLSCR football carnival.jpg" is the logo for the football tournament organized by our school. This logo was created by my friends and me during the 2021/2022 school year. As the design is original and was specifically created for this event, and not derived from any external copyrighted sources, it does not infringe on any copyrights. @Hard I don't make the deletion decision so you'd need to address it with an admin. And I don't agree that your authorship is proven, considering you sourced it to your own Flickr account, and your edit history shows licensing other people's work as your own. Regarding Special:Diff/951224064: You have been much too fast. You should grant some (more?) grace period, especially when a file like in this case has been uploaded with the bigChunkedUpload script, which is automatically stated in the upload comment (cannot be overwritten by the user). — Speravir – 02:56, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

@Speravir Thanks for reaching out here. I do the “no source” tagging to let uploaders know that they forgot to fill in the essential source info. “Source missing” isn’t a true speedy deletion so the image isn’t in any danger of being deleted. I’m usually looking at recent uploads, I’d rather inform uploaders earlier than later so I don’t forget and the uploader doesn’t disappear without fleshing out the info. In my mind, there’s no real downside to tagging an image missing source info (all the uploader has to do is fill out the infobox and remove the template), while there is a downside to waiting.

Also, I have no idea what bigChunkedUpload is, but if you’re doing a automated uploads, wouldn’t you want to know that some stuff is missing?

Hello, As a newcomer, there are a lot of things I don't know, but I am learning slowly from all the experienced Wikipedians here. The reason I am here is to request your help in reviewing my uploads because I think I have some confusion about copyright and licenses. Previously, three of my uploads were deleted, and recently an administrator removed one of my uploads from my draft. Almost all images you find on the web are copyrighted and are not accepted here. So, does that mean I can't use them in an article? Also, I don't have any contact with these subjects, so I can't get permission directly. I have read all the guidelines, but they are very confusing, and I can't understand them clearly. Can you please guide me on when we can upload an image freely from any organization or company?

For example,Urbansquaremall-logo.svg, this image I got from their official website, and a lot of other websites are using it. So I uploaded it too. Now, when or how will I be able to upload it? What kind of permission do I need to use this? Also, do I really need to contact them?

@Gj2020 That's correct - you cannot use them and they will be deleted by an admin.

The guidelines might seem confusing, but it's actually pretty simple: unless you took the photograph yourself, you probably can't use it. There are rare occasions when a photo isn't eligible for copyright protection (i.e., works of the US federal government, old images with expired copyrights), but almost everything you see on the web is copyrighted and cannot be used on Commons.

Now, you mention that other websites are using it. But other websites are not free-license encyclopedias (and they likely have permission from the copyright owners). For us to use an image, the copyright owner needs to release the images under a free license, like Creative Commons Attribution license. This means the image can be freely shared without any restrictions on use or modifications. Most organizations are understandably unwilling to give up that much control over their works.

In short, please don't upload an image unless you see that it is actually freely licensed (look for a Creative Commons license). Unless you see some kind of release, you should assume that it's copyrighted and not permitted here. Adeletron 3030 (talk) 15:41, 21 October 2024 (UTC)

However, you'll also notice that I wrote, Personal AI art with no apparent encyclopedic use, COM:SCOPE, COM:WEBHOST. Please inform yourself of those issues.
