Plants in unidentified locations

Hello! You recently removed from Category:Plants in unidentified locations the following images:

(These five from my watchlist — I fear that there was a lot more.) This is not good, in my opinion: Location is an important data point in Botany, especially when conjugated with timing. While at first glance these close up photos with bokeh backgrounds might seem impossible to locate, keeping them classified as they were might attract some more detailed research, namely by a statement from the photographer (one of the above is even a Commons user) or by comparing with other photos with close timestamps, by the same photographer. (In general all photos should have a location, except for scans of mobile, unindividual items and, maybe, for close-up photographs thereof.) -- Tuválkin ✉ ✇ 21:05, 3 January 2019 (UTC)

In my opinion it would make more sens to ask the photographer to add the location, than to attract more detailed research by putting the picture to the unidentified location category, at least with close ups.

  • Thanks for replying! The reasoning behind my categorization is that leaving it in this category is the best way to, eventually, fix the matter. Not by a long shot, surely, but still better than just ignore location at all. (The one photo above for which there is likely the author itself will add location information to is, of course, a much simpler matter. I saw this image and a few in this series. Are these images released with a free license? As almost all of my uploads, I put these pictures under the CC0 1.0 Universell (CC0 1.0) Public Domain Dedication license and I don't know why you can't find it, it's obvious. 5snake5 (talk) 05:20, 22 September 2020 (UTC)

You can assign a CC0 licence to your photographs, but Commons must also consider the copyright of the objects that appear in photographs, see Commons:Derivative works. German coins are protected by copyright unless they are sufficiently old to be public domain, see COM:CUR Germany. Verbcatcher (talk) 14:32, 22 September 2020 (UTC)

The German version of this side: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Currency#Germany says "no information available", so I gave it a try. By the way, these Pictures are showing the package of coins, what might be different. 5snake5 (talk) 05:08, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

over-categorization

Hi 5snake5! Thanks a lot for uploading the beer cap images. Please take a look at Commons:Categories#Over-categorization (Commons:Categories/de#Überkategorisierung). For example, the images under the Category:Beer caps of Germany does not need to be in the Category:Beer caps and the images in Category:Störtebeker Braumanufaktur beer caps does not need to be in Category:Beer caps of Germany or Category:Beer caps. Hi Meisam, thanks for your hint. Meanwhile I hopefully grew better with categorys. I don't upload pics of caps and labels any more, because I got a warning for copy-right violation Commons:Copyright_rules_by_subject_matter#Product_packaging and don't understand why just a few pis were affected. Thanks 5snake5. You are correct. Only the designs which are very simple shapes and text (for example File:Bottle cap - 036.png) which are ineligible for copyright or very old ones (like File:Bottle cap - 005.png, designed by Ludwig Hohlwein) which their copyright have been expired are allowed on commons.
