Another map edit, please!

[edit]

Hi Cephas - in File:Spatula discors map.svg, could you change the area of purple on the east coast of Brazil to blue, please? They only winter there, not resident. Also, the area of orange on the west coast of North America should be yellow (migration only, not breeding), and the colour removed from Seward Peninsila (Alaska), where they do not occur regularly. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 15:02, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

Hello MPF (talk), how is this. --Cephas (talk) 17:45, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
Perfect, thanks! - MPF (talk) 17:55, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

And another, please :-) File:Nycticorax nycticorax map.svg has a couple of errors: does not occur in Hokkaido (northern Japan), so should be grey not blue; or the northern part of Michigan (between Great Lakes), should be grey not green. Also breeding is more extensive in Europe now (European Breeding Bird Atlas 2, 2021), should be yellow across all of France except close to N coast, all of the Netherlands, and throughout the lower altitude areas of eastern Europe north to 50°N (south of Czech Republic-Poland border, and all of Ukraine except northernmost parts; except for the Carpathian, Balkan, and other mountains). Thanks! - MPF (talk) 12:16, 2 March 2021 (UTC)

Range Maps for Birds

[edit]

Hello Cephas, I am an active editor of neotropical bird pages mostly on spanish wiki, with >570 new pages created and > 800 significant editions, see here. I am also an admin at Wikispecies. I miss good maps at the great majority of pages, and have no time, no skills, to create. Would you attend if I ask some I consider very important? Congrats on your work.--Hector Bottai (talk) 19:07, 16 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi Hector Bottai (talk), No problem. I'm actually completing maps for birds of North and Central America with West Indies. Just put your suggestions below. --Cephas (talk) 19:11, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
Great! My absolute priority would be on families I have completed pages and have no maps: ; ; ; ; ; and genus/family . Many thanks.--Hector Bottai (talk) 19:22, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
Your work on maps for neotropical species is being absolutely fantastic. It is funny because I asked you one map for the whole family and you are doing for every species! Please go ahead!. Please note I have categorized hundreds of your maps at Commons with for example Furnariidae distribution maps, etc. etc. having created many new categories not yet existing. Many thanks once again.--Hector Bottai (talk) 15:15, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
Hello Hector Bottai, It is because that is what I was already doing. But I still can do your map for any families, if ever you can give me references I can work from. --Cephas (talk) 15:26, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
No hurry at all. When HBW was available there were maps of families. I am not sure now at BOW, content only opened por paid suscribers. Looks you do have access. Try here for Grallariidae, for example, [1]. --Hector Bottai (talk) 16:05, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
Congrats friend! You have completed maps for one of the most complex families within Neotropical passeriformes. Thanks a Lot!--Hector Bottai (talk) 23:42, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
Hi friend. Just three species missing to complete Tityridae: ; and . Great job!!--Hector Bottai (talk) 20:07, 27 March 2021 (UTC)--Hector Bottai (talk) 20:07, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

Congrats on one more family finished: Tityridae, and...apologies, I forgot one . Cheers.--Hector Bottai (talk) 14:29, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

Good morning friend, hope you have a peaceful Easter, or just a nice sunday, independently of your beliefs. Your maps for neotropical passeriformes have been a major achievement, and now that you are almost there with the list I passed, I cannot loose the chance to add some more families that I have worked out: , , and . These last two are huge and I am sure you will have fun for several months...Cheers, and thanks once again.--Hector Bottai (talk) 12:03, 4 April 2021 (UTC)--Hector Bottai (talk) 12:03, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
@Hector Bottai: The work is motivating. I am impressed with the consistency (always a minimum amount of information, nice list of references, etc.) of the development of these birds articles in Spanish that I have never seen, neither on English nor on French Wp. --Cephas (talk) 12:23, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the recognition. You will find that consistency only partially at Tyrannidae, Pipridae and Cotingidae, still a lot of work to do at the species page level. I need to go back there, but currently working on multicoloured family Thraupidae (>400 species, 112 genera), around 40% progress and the family page is still a mess. I am remembering now some very small caribbean families recently split, some monotypic, for you to consider also: , , , , , . And split from Thraupidae. Cheers.--Hector Bottai (talk) 20:58, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
Congrats my friend! Challenging family Thamnophilidae completed! It's a major achievement. Thanks.--Hector Bottai (talk) 22:37, 4 June 2021 (UTC)

Range maps

[edit]

Hi Cephas: Can I request your help with some range maps? Specifically, it would be great to get one for (Euphonia trinitatis) and (Zosterops emiliae). Also in all your spare time (ha ha), any you could do for would be much appreciated. Thanks! MeegsC (talk) 13:11, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

Hello MeegsC, I take note of the request, though I have already a whole order ongoing and I'm prioritizing species of the Ameraicas for now. --Cephas (talk) 13:25, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
No problem! Whenever you get the chance, it will be appreciated. MeegsC (talk) 13:27, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the Trinidad euphonia range map. You're a star!! MeegsC (talk) 10:37, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Range map Cinclodes pabsti

[edit]

Hello friend. Thanks again for your extraordinary work. For this species, the ssp espinhacensis is only listed as full species by the Brazilian Committee and its page is as a ssp. My sugestion is to add the small range of espinhacensis (see IUCN map) with a different colour and legend, so we can use it at both pages. Cheers.--Hector Bottai (talk) 21:43, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

Thanks!--Hector Bottai (talk) 00:05, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

Ramphocelus flammigerus map

[edit]

Hello friend, most of the authors, including BLI, HBW and IOC are separating Ramphocelus icteronotus from flammigerus, but Clements/eBird not yet. As several wikis have both pages, I suggest to either separate the maps or show both in the same figure. Great work. --Hector Bottai (talk) 14:33, 18 February 2021 (UTC)

Thanks!--Hector Bottai (talk) 23:25, 18 February 2021 (UTC)

Cyanerpes cyaneus

[edit]

Hi friend, Just a contribution. The literature shows a population in Cuba, resident, of uncertain origin, probably introduced, that is not reflected in your map. Cheers.--Hector Bottai (talk) 17:40, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the edition, but seems you forgot to paint Cuba...Cheers.--Hector Bottai (talk) 12:16, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
@Hector Bottai: Paint Cuba ? I put it in a different green to show the difference with the natural residence. Did you refresh your screen ? --Cephas (talk) 12:21, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
Funny, refreshed several times and not showing the color, but went to some application and it is! Forget it. Thanks again.--Hector Bottai (talk) 12:29, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
@Hector Bottai: Commons has sometimes (often) strange behaviours. What you experienced happened to me several times. --Cephas (talk) 12:32, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

Question about Phytotoma rara map

[edit]

Hi, Cephas. I saw that you uploaded a distribution map of Phytotoma rara. I have a question, maybe you could know the answer. I live in Chiloe Archipelago, where "Year-round" and "Breeding" territories merge (I heared one in my backyard today). Does the source say anything about that zone? I would to add some pixels for the islands but I can't check the source. Thanks in advance. Lin linao ¿dime? 02:12, 11 April 2021 (UTC)

Hello @Lin linao: , The source says the species is present year-round on Chiloe Island. The thing is, often, the scale at which my maps are drawn doesn't provide very much precisions on exact distribution: it is more a general idea about where a particular species is located in the world. In this particular case, Chiloe Island doesn't even appear on the blank map I'm using. In addition, I can say that even when the "precision" is available on the map and on the source, the source(s) is (are) not always right. I can say this based on species in my own region that I know well, and I'm sure precisions could be asked for many of the maps that I draw. --Cephas (talk) 11:54, 11 April 2021 (UTC)

Thamnistes rufescens map

[edit]

Hi friend, What I could see, the distribution of this species goes south to Bolivia (Cochabamba). Thanks.--Hector Bottai (talk) 20:01, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

Seriema map

[edit]

Hi Cephas: Any chance I can get you to do a new map for black-legged seriema? The only map available on Commons doesn't show country boundaries, which may make it hard for people to visualise where it lives. Thanks! MeegsC (talk) 14:19, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

Wow! You're quick! Merci, mon ami. MeegsC (talk) 15:24, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

Cercomacra manu map

[edit]

Dear Cephas, the map according eBird is missing isolated areas in Central amazonian Brazil, in the text they mention and they also show in the registers map. I personally took a bad photo of this difficult bird in one os those areas. The IUCN map is much more accurated in this case. Cercomacra manu Thanks! --Hector Bottai (talk) 18:24, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

Maranon Antshrike Map

[edit]

Hello, I would like to thank you for including an SVG map for the Thamnophilus shumbae map. I was wondering how you did it. Thanks in advance! NinjaWeeb (talk) 16:22, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

@NinjaWeeb: , I'm using Inkscape to do my maps. --Cephas (talk) 16:32, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

Knipolegus signatus

[edit]

Good morning, Your map is correct. The southern part of the range is now Knipolegus cabanisi, splitted from signatus. The spanish wiki is outdated, and others as well. I will work on it as soon as I can. Thanks!--Hector Bottai (talk) 12:18, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

Tyrannidae

[edit]

Congrats my friend, largest Passeriformes family completed is a MAJOR achievement! Thanks a lot!--Hector Bottai (talk) 16:48, 17 July 2021 (UTC)

@Hector Bottai: What proportion of South American bird maps do you evaluate are done by now (considering that Trochilidae, Parulidae and Icteridae are also done)? --Cephas (talk) 16:54, 17 July 2021 (UTC)
Considering South América have roughly 3000 species, you have done how many? More than 1500 probably. You also have partially done. Next big is but the family page is a shame. I am working on it following Genera and species order and around 85% completed. Total >400 species. Should you want I can prepare a list of fully updated genera to start working on it. Pls, don't forget the small Caribbean families I sent above. Thanks again.--Hector Bottai (talk) 17:18, 17 July 2021 (UTC)

Vireonidae

[edit]

Hello friend, one more family completed. I did a full review and update of and found a few holes on maps that you may want to fix:

  • , as all the mayor classifications already splitted , there is no sense in showing the map for the old full distribution. The map at IUCN is not that accurate, I suggest eBird.
@Hector Bottai: , I uploaded a new version for Vireo olivaceus from BoW. Is it ok ? --Cephas (talk) 18:35, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
It's fine!--Hector Bottai (talk) 19:49, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
  • , as the map is showing thoracicus only, we would need a map for IUCN splitted .
  • . The map is correct, up to you new map for IUCN splitted and .
  • , as the map is lacking IUCN splitted , we would need a map for it.
  • , as the map is lacking IUCN splitted , we would need a map for it.

Hope I am not boring you too much. Thanks a lot. --Hector Bottai (talk) 20:30, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

Merci!--Hector Bottai (talk) 17:36, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

About Jardin universitaire Roger-Van den Hende

[edit]

I have the suspicion that we were both at the same time in the botanical garden of Quebec (Jardin universitaire Roger-Van den Hende), I saw several people with cameras. I saw a man with his family and a dog, I think he was you. I come to this conclusion by the time and date of the uploads of your photos of the Garden. Either way, it was a pleasure to know that you were there, if you weren't those people. It had rained in the morning and it was perfect to capture the dew, I was there for several hours and I still have not classified the photos --Wilfredor (talk) 19:06, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

@Wilfredor: No, wrong guy: no family and no dog, but probably somewhere around. ;-) --Cephas (talk) 19:17, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
I arrived at 8 o'clock but at the entrance, the sign said that entry was only allowed after 9 o'clock.

--Wilfredor (talk) 22:48, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

@Wilfredor: Exactly the same one! How funny. You are right, it open at 9 on weekend and at 8 during the week. That is why it was so quiet for a while. --Cephas (talk) 22:59, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

Certhiasomus stictolaemus

Hi friend. O don't know why we missed this map on the so completed Furnariidae maps. Cheers.--Hector Bottai (talk) 23:55, 9 August 2021 (UTC)

Merci! --Hector Bottai (talk) 21:41, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

Melopyrrha

[edit]

Hello friend, great progress at Thraupidae, thanks. For your list of maps to do. The species was recently splitted from (and considered extinct), see eBird. Additionally, is considered separated from by Birdlife (as Pyrrhulagra taylori). I created pages for both. My best.--Hector Bottai (talk) 14:16, 23 August 2021 (UTC)

Merci! --Hector Bottai (talk) 20:18, 23 August 2021 (UTC)

Map of Painted Stork range

[edit]

Hi! I noticed you are very active and you create a lot of maps of range. Could you please upload a map of range of Painted Stork (Mycteria leucocephala)? The map we have right now is very old (29 years since publication of Handbook of the Birds of the World) and outdated (for example this species doesn't live in China anymore). Greetings Pikador (talk) 07:29, 3 September 2021 (UTC)

2021 eBird/Clements

[edit]

Dear friend, the 2021 list is ready to come and all changes were antecipated in a summary. Most are confirmations or recognitions of splits which brings the need for updating some maps. I am still digesting many and working on heavy editions. My plan is to inform you one by one as soon as I understand, with possible sources of information. Here it goes the first: split into (map ok!) and (map ok!). Everythig west at this map have to be removed (it is maura now). Take your time, pls. Cheers.--Hector Bottai (talk) 11:54, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

@Hector Bottai: The easiest way to work for me is to draw the map once it is available in IUCN hence, to have a list of the reviewed species that I can update in right time would be a good strategy. I suspect IUCN to be quite quick to review the species, but I may be wrong. --Cephas (talk) 12:08, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
It is a question of efficiency: I drew maps according to some descriptions already, but it is time consuming and somewhat painfull. The less I have to do like this, the better it is. --Cephas (talk) 12:19, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
Unfortunatelly IUCN sometimes takes a different approach or delays long time in implementing changes. Taxonomy has been very dynamic and splits are happening more and more, and most of the wikis are well behind in editing. After the acquisition of Birds of the World Alive by eBird/Clements, this has become the main and reliable source of changes. Spanish wiki follows Clements and English follows IOC, those two classifications are quite aligned in most of the cases. What I can do is informing you case by case, the potential source of map information, and of course, will be your decision and availability. Anyway thanks a lot for your marvelous work. We had nothing and now I am pretending to be fully updated, is too much pretension isn't it?--Hector Bottai (talk) 12:34, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
Ok then, in this case the good approach for me would be to have, in one shot, all the cases together. Not interspersed in the discussion page: I will forget some. Can you put them aside and once you have been through the list, bring it to me in one section? Is there a lot of it? --Cephas (talk) 12:42, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
Ok I will do that, except on huge split of rufula in 16 species!! No problem.--Hector Bottai (talk) 12:49, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Clements/eBird 2021 neotropical changes one shot

[edit]

As you asked, joined almost all in one shot. Here we go, I will try my best.
1. split into (map ok!) and (map ok!). Everythig west at this map have to be removed (it is maura now).
2. (map ok!) split from . The southern smallest range at this map have to be removed.
3. (map ok!) split from . The southern smallest range at this map have to be removed.
4. split from . Everything from México to easternmost Panamá of this map is mexicanus; everything South America, including some overlap in easternmost Panamá is obscurior.
5. split from . On this map everyting north of the Amazon river is perrotii, everyting south is uniformis.
6. split from . on [this map p. 43] everyting north not including yellow is rufifrons, everything south including yellow is delattrii.
7. split from . This is the most difficult to explain because I have no map reference, only written ranges [BOW]. On this map, everything Central America, Pacific coast of Sout America, including the central leg of Colombian Andes and a small part of Carribbean coast is bilineata; all the rest of South America (including the third leg of the Colombian Andes) is plumbea.
8. recognized split of ; extinct not recognized, but both have maps at IUCN, and the existent maps at pages are not good. Up to you.
9 split from . The small range at the coast of Yucatan peninsula on this map is albiventris.

Additionally, and this is not part of the list, I created a page for treated as species by Birdlife but not by others. map here.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at any doubt. And THANKS!--Hector Bottai (talk) 14:47, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

Common Gull map

[edit]

Hi Cephas - with the long-overdue split of Larus brachyrhynchus from Larus canus finally done ([2]), the map File:Larus canus map.svg needs updating. Could you make 3 versions, please: (1) remove the North American distribution from the map, and upload as File:Larus canus map.svg (i.e., with the updated Eurasia-only L. canus distribution using the old filename!); (2) have the North American distribution as a new map File:Larus brachyrhynchus map.svg; and (3) re-upload the original combined map with a new name, either File:Larus canus & Larus brachyrhynchus combined map.svg or File:Larus canus (sensu lato) map.svg. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 22:35, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

Thanks; apologies for the typo in brachyrhynchus! The Larus canus map still includes it, though? - MPF (talk) 07:18, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
@MPF: Larus canus is coming. --Cephas (talk) 10:09, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
Excellent, thanks! If the new version could 'unsplit' Iceland, that would be great too! - MPF (talk) 10:59, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
Been forgetting - that's superb, thanks! One small correction, they don't breed in Morocco, that is a wintering location - MPF (talk) 20:35, 19 September 2021 (UTC)
@MPF: About Morocco, the IUCN bland colors are confusing, but Birds of the World clearly indicate a breeding range. It does not matter to me to put wintering range in Morocco, but I would need a reference to do so. --Cephas (talk) 20:56, 19 September 2021 (UTC)
Thanks! This is an obvious error, they don't breed there, and never have done (and is right at the southern limit of the wintering range, too; quite rare that far south); perhaps a compilation error referring to some other gull?? Will Olsen & Larsson, Gulls of Europe, Asia and North America do for a reference? Or Svensson et al., Collins Bird Guide? Or Snow & Perrins, The Birds of the Western Palearctic? None of them map it breeding there. - MPF (talk) 22:13, 19 September 2021 (UTC)

Phalacrocorax fuscicollis map.svg

[edit]

Thanks for updating Eudocimus albus map. I found a map created by you 11 years ago which is very outdated (Phalacrocorax fuscicollis map.svg). IUCN and Birds of the World have the same new version with much reduced range compared to that old map. Could you update it (or create a new one)? Pikador (talk) 05:16, 11 September 2021 (UTC)

The Grallaria rufula complex

[edit]

Hello friend. The former has been splitted into a lot of new or resurrected sp: – – – – – – – – – – – – . IUCN still do not recognize but other yes. In this paper you will find a good map with all the above sp: SACC 883. This will need to rework G. rufula, of course. Thanks a lot.--Hector Bottai (talk) 14:15, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

Borders on your maps

[edit]

Hi! I really like your maps and noticed something interesting about them that I wanted to ask about.
On your maps, e.g. Cyornis ruckii map.svg, you make the political boundary cut off at the ocean, instead of it wrapping back round on the coastline. How do you do this? Do you use a special data set? I use ArcGIS but I am also happy to know how to do this in QGIS.
Many thanks — Berrely • TC 17:13, 8 November 2021 (UTC)

@Berrely: I'm using Inkscape at a very basic level and I'm not sure to understand your question. --Cephas (talk) 19:17, 8 November 2021 (UTC)

Map clarity

[edit]

Hi Cephas - on File:Chlidonias niger map.svg the winter distribution is barely visible (blue presence on blue sea!) Could you make it more conspicuous, please - thicker blue wintering, and make the sea a much paler blue? Also, it should be shown as present on migration both inland in western Europe (west of the breeding range, and north to England - File:Chlidonias niger, Big Waters, Northumberland 1.jpg ;-)), and offshore likewise on Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts (south from southern Scandinavia and England) to connect to the wintering areas in Africa. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 23:50, 10 November 2021 (UTC)

@MPF: If I use the IUCN map as source, would that be ok (about the migration area)? --Cephas (talk) 23:55, 10 November 2021 (UTC)
Yes, that looks fine, thanks! Only slight difference, I'd extend it a little further north in England - they are scarce, but regular in small numbers, where I am at 55°N in northeast England. Decidedly rare in Scotland, so don't extend it that far! - MPF (talk) 00:04, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
Another map that could be improved for clarity: File:Podiceps andinus map.svg could you add the coastlines of adjacent Ecuador, Panama, Venezuela, and indicate the sea in a different colour (pale blue?), please? Perhaps also the country names, though that might conflict with language neutrality. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 22:45, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
That's super, thanks! - MPF (talk) 00:14, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi Cephas - File:Sterna dougallii map.svg needs some small improvements, please: (a) it no longer breeds on the south coast of England; and (b) breeding should be shown extending further south on the east coast of Ireland (the largest colony is just off Dublin). Could you also make the orange breeding areas in northeast England, SE Canada, and NE USA, a bit more conspicuous too, please? Thanks! - MPF (talk) 22:25, 25 December 2021 (UTC)

Excellent, thanks! - MPF (talk) 15:30, 27 December 2021 (UTC)

Distribution map for Sabine's gull

[edit]

Hi, I've noticed that your distribution map for Sabine's gull (Xema_sabini) doesn't include any breeding areas in Canada. You based your map File:Xema_sabini_map.svg on the IUCN map here: https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/22694479/157413905 which also doesn't show any Canadian breeding areas. I think this is an error on the part of the IUCN (Birdlife International)

The IUCN text has "This species breeds in the Arctic and has a circumpolar distribution through northernmost North America and Eurasia." which suggests that birds breed in North America.

Other sources all show birds breeding in Canada.

which has on p. 194: "Distribution. Breeds in North America from northern and coastal western Alaska (south to Bristol Bay), northwestern Mackenzie, and Banks, Victoria, Bathurst, northwestern Devon and Bylot islands south locally to King William, southern Southampton and southwestern Baffin islands, and northern Keewatin; and in the Palearctic in northern Greenland and Spitsbergen, and from the New Siberian Islands and northern Siberia south to the Taimyr Peninsula and Lena Delta."
  • Recent article on breeding in Alaska: Amundson, C. L., P. L. Flint, R. A. Stehn, R. M. Platte, H. M. Wilson, W. W. Larned and J. B. Fischer. 2019. Can you update the map - or would you like me to try to do so? - Aa77zz (talk) 19:00, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

Done. Cephas (talk) 23:10, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
Many thanks for your quick response. I wondered whether Birdlife International had somehow split the species but this doesn't appear to be the case. Their taxonomy is available from http://datazone.birdlife.org/species/taxonomy ("Download an Excel version of the current list" HBW-BirdLife_Checklist_v5_Dec20.zip).
And many thanks for all your hard work in creating so many distribution maps. A distribution map is a very important part of an article - second only to having a photograph of the bird itself. Many people will not bother to read the text. - Aa77zz (talk) 08:08, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

File:Leucocarbo atriceps map.svg

[edit]

In taxonomy used by IUCN this species lives also on South Sandwich Islands, few islands in southern Indian Ocean and few islands south of New Zealand (Macquarie Island, Bishop and Clerk Islets). They all are small and would be barely visible on a map but maybe use small cirles to indicate this bird lives there? Different zooming of the map (just showing southern oceans) would help also. However in taxonomy by IOC and Birds of the World most subspecies are split (only subspecies from South America and Falkland Islands remain) and it would require creating another map. Pikador (talk) 22:54, 26 December 2021 (UTC)

Diopsittaca nobilis map.svg

[edit]

Hi! Could you please make a 2nd map for this species? The one you created today is based on IUCN taxonomy (it includes 1 subspecies only) while IOC and Birds of the World recognize 3 subspecies - they lump Diopsittaca nobilis with Diopsittaca cumanensis (2 subspecies). So the new map would require combining those 2 IUCN maps. Pikador (talk) 20:41, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

Euphonia affinis x Euphonia godmani

[edit]

Hello friend, long time. Hope everything goes well. Euphonia godmani has been officially (IOC) split form E. affinis. Range of the blue-headed parrot

[edit]

I've modified the range map File:Pionus menstruus map.svg for the blue-headed parrot to include the range of the subspecies Pionus menstruous reichenowi as per the IOC. Birdlife International treats this subspecies as a full species, the blue-breasted parrot, and has a separate range map. See here. I've retained the same file name and I now realise that this may be an error. I notice that many other wikis also use this map and I'm not sure that they all use the IOC taxonomy. Should I upload the file with a different name? Feel free to replace my map if you consider it unsatisfactory - I don't use Inkscape very often and each time I have to relearn how to manipulate a map.- Aa77zz (talk) 13:29, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

I have encountered this situation several times. It is indeed preferable to keep the two maps and let the contributors choose the one that suits their needs. Let's leave it that way, but if there are criticisms, we will do appropriate corrections. Cephas (talk) 22:12, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

Map edit request

[edit]

Hi Cephas - File:Nucifraga columbiana map.svg needs a couple of small additions for isolated populations in Mexico not currently shown: one in northern Baja California in the Sierra San Pedro Martír mountains (around 31°N 115.4°W, in a narrow NNW-SSE strip about 70 km long), and one around Cerro Potosí (24.87°N 100.23°W) and nearby summits (north to 25.44°N 100.53°W) in the Sierra Madre Oriental along the Nuevo León - Coahuila border. References, e.g. North American Bird Guide (Sibley 2000) shows both [also pers. obs. for Cerro Potosí :-)]. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 17:34, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

Excellent, thanks! - MPF (talk) 19:40, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
Hi Cephas - another edit request, please! File:Cygnus columbianus map.svg is missing any indication of migration in Eurasia like it is shown for North America. Could you add some yellow connections between the Arctic Eurasian breeding grounds, and the wintering areas in NW Europe, and SW & E Asia, please? Additional correction: very few now winter in Ireland, only in the southeast (due to short stopping with global warming). Indication of the two subspecies (C. c. bewickii in Eurasia, C. c. columbianus in N America) would also help (no doubt they'll be split some day!). Also, would it be feasible to make the map divide at 30°W, rather than 0°, please? It doesn't look good with the UK wintering population split at each end of the map. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 14:12, 24 May 2022 (UTC)
And another one, please; much easier this time! File:Haematopus ater map.svg needs North America removing; the area marked there is H. bachmani, which is already mapped separately as File:Haematopus bachmani map.svg. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 14:17, 28 May 2022 (UTC)

Eastern meadowlark range map

[edit]

Hi, the AOU and the IOC (version 12.2) have split the en:Eastern meadowlark to create an additional species, the en:Chihuahuan meadowlark. I've created a new map for the Eastern meadowlark to reflect this split. To do this I've edited the map that you created File:Sturnella magna map.svg and removed the ranges of the two subspecies (lilianae and auropectoralis) to create a new map File:Sturnella magna map after split.svg. I took the ranges from Fig 1 in doi:10.1093/ornithology/ukab004 (open access).

I did not know what author to specify for the modified map - and what license to use. Have a look and please change it if necessary. Thanks - Aa77zz (talk) 10:04, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

[edit]

Hi Cephas - on File:Ardenna gravis map.svg, could you add Tristan da Cunha highlighted as the only significant breeding colony, please? There is also a very small colony on the Falkland Islands, up to you whether you want to add that too. Also, the non-breeding range needs some extension in the northeast Atlantic, to reach the southern fringes of Iceland, the north, west and south coasts of Ireland, and the western fringes of Scotland, Cornwall, Brittany, and Iberia. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 20:40, 10 September 2022 (UTC)

Hirundinea ferruginea and H. bellicosa

[edit]

Hi friend, The only taxonomy to split those two is Birdlife. Current map is splitted H. ferruginea, so we are missing a map for H. bellicosa (good map at IUCN). Egretta caerulea map

[edit]

Hi! Could you create a new map for Egretta caerulea? The old one (which I suggest to keep as a separate file for historical reasons) is quite different than new maps on IUCN and Birds of the World sites. Pikador (talk) 08:07, 5 November 2022 (UTC)

I such a case, I'm often told to replace the old map so there is no need to make the change in all the pages that uses it. Cephas (talk) 09:55, 5 November 2022 (UTC)

À propos des oiseaux et autres animaux

[edit]

Cephas (talk) 20:47, 20 November 2022 (UTC)

Elaenia albiceps vs. Elaenia chilensis

[edit]

Hello friend. These two taxons are splitted by some authors (including IOC) and not by others (like Birdlife). Current map for albiceps is including chilensis. IOC 13.1

[edit]

Hello fried. IOC version 13.1 brings a big number of taxonomic changes, many splits, few lumps, which affect maps, of course. I only take care of Neotropics, no time for the rest. How do you prefer to infom you, case by case or in a bunch? Example: Contopus punensis (map ok) and Contopus bogotensis (map ok) splitted from Contopus cinereus (map includes all), new good map at IUCN. Please tell me. my best Hector Hector Bottai (talk) 21:50, 19 November 2022 (UTC)

Pampa excellens

[edit]

Pampa excellens is lumped into Pampa curvipennis. Suggest creating a Pampa curvipennis 2 merging both maps. Hector Bottai (talk) 01:37, 26 December 2022 (UTC)

Nesotriccus incomtus

[edit]

Nesotriccus incomtus is split from Phaeomyias murina (now Nesotriccus murinus). Unfortunately I don't have a good reference for map. BOW only shows the Hot Map, and IUCN is not updated yet. Maybe the hot map gives you a reasonable good idea for the split. Hector Bottai (talk) 14:22, 29 December 2022 (UTC)

Nesotriccus maranonicus

[edit]

Nesotriccus maranonicus is split from Phaeomyias tumbezana (now Nesotriccus tumbezanus), in current map, the small eastern area is maranonicus. Hector Bottai (talk) 14:26, 29 December 2022 (UTC)

Trogon surrucura

[edit]

Could you create another map for this species? The existing map, made according to IUCN, displays range of only 1 subspecies, but other authorities (IOC, Birds of the World) include Trogon aurantius as second subspecies of Trogon surrucura.
