English: Around the year 700, the bishop Eadfrith wrote and painted the Lindisfarne Gospels completely by hand. Combining influences drawn from Irish, Germanic and Mediterranean cultures, it’s a stunning example of medieval art and book design.
1300 years later, the Lindisfarne Gospels stands as one of the world’s most celebrated manuscripts. Eleanor Jackson, Curator of Illuminated Manuscripts, brings this collection item into focus.
