Notes | Mediterranean mapmakers, such as Oliva, were less familiar with northern Atlantic waters. This meant charts of these areas were less accurate and ‘phantom islands’ were often included. This chart, with the British Isles at the centre, includes the ‘phantom islands’ of Frislanda and Stilanda, thought to exist in the north-west. The small red circle towards the top of the chart marks the island of Brasil, a mythical island often recorded in Irish folklore. |
