Description
-*- This small painting on canvas is very close in style to the work of the German painter who spent most of his working life in Rome, Adam Elsheimer ( see Andrews 1977 ). The handling does not seem, however, to be by Elsheimer himself nor is there a known original of this composition by Elsheimer. It may, therefore, be the work of a follower of Elsheimer recording an original composition by the master or it may be an original work by one of his followers. In the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, there is a painting of this subject which was formerly thought to be by Elsheimer himself. It was attributed by Andrews to the Flemish painter Adriaen van Stalbemt, who also could be the artist of the Hallwyl painting (Andrews 1973, P. 301 - 307 ).
