Description
English: Bacterial symbionts physically associate with and wrap around the Barroeca monosierra extracellular matrix (ECM).
(A) A single TEM section through a B. monosierra colony shows choanoflagellate cells on the periphery and bacteria in the center. Box indicates region shown in panels B – C.
(B, C) Section (150 nm) through the colony reveal the close proximity of bacteria to the choanoflagellate ECM.
(C) False coloring of the TEM sections highlights the associations among the ECM (orange) and bacteria (blue) that wrap around the ECM at two separate sites (1*, 2*). Choanoflagellate cells indicated as CC.
