Faroese stamps 1986

In 1986, Postverk Føroya, the postal administration of the Faroe Islands, issued 15 stamps, including one stamp sheet of 3 stamps.

Skrímsla

Skrímsla means "monster" in Faroese. It is the title of an old Faroese ballad, also known as "The Giant". The theme of the ballad is a fairy tale, where a farmer defeats the giant in a game. In order to save his life, the giant has to give the farmer all that he wants, and build him a castle including a fountain of youth. Bárður Jákupsson designed this set of four, which was issued 3 February 1986. In connection with this issue there was also a set of maximum cards.

Europe CEPT

Common motto for the Europe CEPT stamps in 1986 was environmental protection. The Faroes contributed with two stamps about sea pollution. Also this set was designed by Bárður Jákupsson. Date of issue was 7 April.

Amnesty International 1961-1986

Amnesty International was founded 28 May 1961 in Great Britain. The Faroese section was founded as early as in 1965 and is thus among the oldest national sections of AI. For the stamp edition was held a competition and the three winning artists are presented below. While Olivur við Neyst and Eli Smith are well known painters, was Rannvá Kunoy a school girl (today a well known artist, living in London). Date of issue was 2 June.

Hafnia 1987

For the international philatelic exhibition Hafnia in Copenhagen 1987 issued the Faroese post a stamp sheet of three stamps with the values 3.00, 4.70 and 6.00 DKK. But the sheet itself costed 20.00 DK. The benefit was to support the exhibition, thus the early date of issue in 1986 on 29 August. It is showing a water color from 1782 after a drawing from 1778 of the old Tórshavn, Eastern Bay (Eystara Vág).

Old bridges

The last edition for 1986 was a set of three by the artist Ingálvur av Reyni, depicting three old Faroese bridges. These bridges were built around 1900 and are parts of the first real ways in the Faroes. The stamps were engraved by Czeslaw Slania and were issued on 13 October.

  FR 136: Glyvragjógv at Glyvrar, Eysturoy of 1902. It is 340cm long, 215cm high, 205cm wide and costed 200 DKK. The constructers were the brothers Jákup, Wenzel and Jóhan David Jacobsen, called Sølfjarðarbrøðurnir.

  FR 137: Leypanagjógv at Oyrargjógv, Vágar of 1912. It was built by Jógvan Johannesen and Jógvan á Mýrini. It is 300cm long, 285cm high and 300cm wide. Costs: 272.77 DKK.

  FR 138: Breiðá on the way to Skælingur, Streymoy of 1908 by the brothers Andrass Jensen and Jens á Trøðni. Costs: 383 DKK.
