Commons License

[edit]

Hi, so far there are only a few Commons licenses proposed - is there a way to pick another one? Thanks --Jwh (talk) 18:56, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you have version 1.11 choose "Inna" ("other" in Polish, I forgot to translate it, sorry) and type wikitext below, eg. [1]. Yarl 19:45, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - I was looking for a "Inna license" ;-) --Jwh (talk) 19:58, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, got the wrong file...Hi, I've still a concern. If I put {{PD-user|Jwh}} below "Inna", it just writes PD-user|Jwh under Licensing without grabbing the license text. Besides this, you've made a very nice tool! --Jwh (talk) 21:10, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nice to hear :). Yarl 22:24, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No upload possible: "page protected"

[edit]
Fixed in version 1.11

Hi there.

I tried to use the VicuñaUploader on my Ubuntu machine. As far as I checked it everything ran smoothly, including login and checking if a file with the chosen name already existed on Commons. But in the end, the upload failed with an error message stating that the page was protected – whatever that means. The file lies on an external hard drive, but that shouldn't be a problem, right? Greetings, --El Grafo (talk) 21:02, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It shouldn't. 'Page is protected' means that destination name is blocked on Commons, but it's rare situation, so problem is rather somewhere else. Firstly: download latest version. If there's still problem run program using console/terminal and send me log via mail. Yarl 21:27, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I used version 1.10, I'll try the 1.11 within the next few days. --El Grafo (talk) 21:36, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, in version <1.11 was bug - users with space in login couldn't upload, so it will help. Yarl 21:40, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Works now, thanks. --El Grafo (talk) 17:23, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Suggested feature

[edit]

Hello, it would be great if this tool allowed the "Information" template to be overridden with a text of our choice. I have a few hundreds of files to be uploaded that use the template {{Flore des Serres}} with the information template embedded, and it would be really great if I could use this tool to upload them. This would allow a lot more liberty on uploads, similar to the basic upload form, which is what I always use.-- Darwin Ahoy! 17:40, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, you can :). Go to Settings->Program, in 'Advanced' section change 'File desc. source' to 'from external file' and below load .txt file saved as UTF-8 without BOM. You can save there eg.
{{SomeFancyTemplate
 |description = %DESC%
 |date = %DATE%
}}

%DESC% and %DATE% will be replaced with values from fields in program. There are more, but it's not well tested, so that's why it isn't in documentation. Yarl 18:14, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Great!! And how do I know the available variables? Is there a list? I've been waiting for a thing like this for so long...-- Darwin Ahoy! 00:10, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Found it in FUpload.java. :) Great, great. will start trying it. Does it add the files to my watch list, BTW?-- Darwin Ahoy! 00:28, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Works like a charm, many thanks for this superb tool!-- Darwin Ahoy! 03:33, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No vicuna.jar

[edit]

It is writen in the docs to run it via vicuna.jar. But there is no vicuna.jar file in the package!--Juandev (talk) 00:12, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I guess you clicked the "download as zip" button here? That seems to be the whole source code – which you don't need. Try the vicuna-1.13.zip below instead, that one worked for me. --El Grafo (talk) 08:16, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

would it be possible to add the option of including geodata via the {{Object location}} Template? I know that there are good reasons for {{Location}} (camera location) being the default, but there are some cases, where Object location is useful. For example, I have some aerial pictures that were taken at rather high altitudes with a long focal length: In those cases, knowing the camera location alone is not very useful if you want to find the object you can see on the picture at Google Earth etc. I could of course simply put the template below the license by hand, but it would be great if I could use that nifty map-feature for that. However, I would not recommend to enable such a feature by default and it should not be possible to put location data from the EXIF directly into that template. Maybe it could be enabled via the settings menue – some kind of experienced users opnly? Greetings, --El Grafo (talk) 10:09, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, good idea. Yarl 17:08, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Adding automatic numbering for file names?

[edit]
Fixed in version 1.14

Hello,

one thing I like about the Upload Wizard is, that it provides the option to copy the file name of the first image of a batch to all the other ones below and automatically add increasing numbers – that's very handy if you have a series of pictures to upload and give them consistent names but keep the original names on you harddrive. With Vicuña, I already can copy descriptions and categories (which is really an improvement over Commonist), so I guess it would be possible to enable this for filenames too? Greetings, --El Grafo (talk) 11:07, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sound good, I'll add it soon. Yarl 17:08, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done Yarl 21:00, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I dont like this feature. If I can I am trying to make a specific file name. There are also projects run by WMCZ, which demand specific file naming - not numbering. So what about to make this feature on switch?--Juandev (talk) 22:53, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oh yes please make it on switch. I didn't know about it and luckily realized what was goin' to happen just before the upload. Suddenly all christian saints had the same name, a mess to correct it manually...
I too try to make the file names as specific as possible and I'd rather prefer to have the same file names on projects as on my harddisc. Thanks for considering this. --Jwh (talk) 15:40, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The user does not know what he wants,

[edit]

until he sees what he gets...

Hi, I've tried to add |other_versions= , but didn't succeed, so I added it after the upload. Is there another way to do this?

Thanks for this great tool! --Jwh (talk) 21:42, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bad Filenames

[edit]
Fixed in version 1.14

Vicuna does not detect my Olympus-Defaultfilnames as bad (P111111.JPG). Commons denys this as "bad filename". Possible to detect the Olympus-Defaultfilenames as bad during the pre-check? There might be quite a few not yet detected standard-filenames. I suggest adding a commented regex-section for bad filenames somewhere in a config-file to allow easy updating (don't know where this is currently checked). --Ordercrazy (talk) 09:49, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done, you can find in here. Yarl 21:02, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Tooltipp for Coord-Adding-Icon is polish only

[edit]
Fixed in version 1.14

The tooltip for the icon to add Coords is only polish ("Otwiera mape z ..."). Text should be parameterized in messages-file. --Ordercrazy (talk) 09:50, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It will be fixed in ver. 1.14. Yarl 11:49, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done Yarl 21:03, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Defaults for Description

[edit]
Fixed in version 1.14

Default-Description (Right-Click in Description-Field) is currently only PL and EN. I'd like to have at least DE, possible also fr and es - maybe shown entrys (and their defaults!) can be determined by the entrys in #context menu 3 in messages.properties --Ordercrazy (talk) 09:54, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I will add some in ver. 1.14. Yarl 11:49, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done. Now in Settings -> File you can add any template you want. Yarl 21:05, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Geodata from Satellite-Pic

[edit]
Fixed in version 1.14

I'd often rely on satellite-pics for adding geo-koordinates. Would be great if Vicuna would support either googlemaps, yahoomaps or bingmaps in satellite- or hybrid-mode. --Ordercrazy (talk) 09:57, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bing sat. will be added in ver. 1.14. Yarl 21:52, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done Yarl 21:06, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Last Coords should be saved somewhere

[edit]
Fixed in version 1.14

Whenever i start vicuna and begin to add coordinates i have to zoom in my region again. Would it be possible to save coords and zoomlevel automatically on exiting the program? --Ordercrazy (talk) 09:59, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done. It saves previous location. Yarl 21:06, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

German Translation

[edit]
Fixed in version 1.14

I uploaded a german Translation-File under Commons:VicuñaUploader/messages_de_DE.properties. Far from perfect, but working (at my installation) without any changes, just add the file as messages_de_DE.properties to the .jar at the appropriate location. Hope this helps. --Ordercrazy (talk) 10:09, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, thanks :). It will be in ver. 1.14. Yarl 11:49, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done. Yarl 21:07, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Tabtitle Right "Opi" is polish

[edit]
Fixed in version 1.14

Minor: Tabtitle of MainWindow to the right reads "Opi" (Means "Grandpa" in German... :) ) --Ordercrazy (talk) 09:38, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Numeric Filenames not recognized as bad

[edit]
Fixed in version 1.14

Minor: Upload for filename "218 469-5 (01)" failed: Commons seems to deny non-alphanumeric filenames. Would be nice if Vicuna would detect this before the actual upload. --Ordercrazy (talk) 09:38, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done. Yarl 21:08, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Localisation

[edit]

Why not use translatewiki.net? Java property files are supported natively as far as I can see. --Nemo 16:18, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good, I'll think about that. Yarl 21:30, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

[edit]

Why use semicolons instead of pipes? A category name can contain semicolons, while pipes are of course impossible. This is also why Commonist uses pipes (like most tools), and compatibility is a good thing for usability. --Nemo 16:18, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Separating categories by semicolons gives the advantage to do [[Category:XXX|ABC]] which is not possibly in Commonist. One of the reasons I switched to Vicuña. --Jwh (talk) 16:52, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
How often is the sortkey used? Do you use a different one for each category or would defaultsort do the job? Do you like the approach in HotCat? Is there another character which could be used to indicate the sortkey for Vicuña? --Nemo 17:41, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, are you asking me how often I use it or how often the community feels the need to use it? Can't give you an answer, neither how many categories use a semicolon - once I'll upload to such a category I gonna use Commonist, promised. When the defaultsort does it, then there is no need for another key - if not, then there might be one, that's obvious. Hotcat's nice, but it's an extra edit after the upload. Cheers. --Jwh (talk) 19:34, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'll try to solve it somehow. Yarl 13:44, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

v 1.13 - testing

[edit]

Let me place here a dynamic list of points testing this sw:

  • great tool, great job man! looks like the replace of Commonoist
  • it wood be nice to copy categories to all selected files - its quite often I upload in batches, which goes to one cat
  • the category finder is great!
  • something which starts with Otwiera mape... would need translation to English
  • I wonder, why it firstly creates gallery?! From what? - is this proces set after upload?
  • would be nice, if it is possible to get date from ogg, oga and ogv metadata layer
  • skáču radostí - saving session is something which I missed in Commonist - several times I lost there the work of several hours
  • opis - might be also translated--Juandev (talk) 01:31, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely the BETTER commonist.
To edit (and, if you wish also name) ALL selected files: select your files, press CTRL-E (also availabe via edit-submenu), add whatever you want (with VARIABLES!) Took me a while to find this GREAT function either!

Bugs

[edit]
Fixed in version 1.14

I am unable to upload. There is an uploading process, but nothing is happening - I dont see the green line even several minutes gone. Whats wrong? I have Windows Vista. ONGOING --Juandev (talk) 01:28, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please start vicuna using .bat file, and if you see any errors, send it to me via email. Currently there is no progress in 'upload bar' during upload so you must check activity of your LAN adapter to check if it's working. Notice, that there's a problem with uploading files bigger than 100MB. Yarl 22:14, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I think LAN adapter works as far as I can upload via Commonist. These files are not more 100MB.--Juandev (talk) 22:29, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

More precisely: check activity of your LAN adapter to check if Vicuna is uploading files. Yarl 22:47, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done. There in new upload method with chunked upload support, now it should work. Yarl 21:11, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Minor: Translation

Within CTRL-E: Tooltip of Category-Box is polish only ("Kategori dla pliku"). Seems hardcoded, didn't find this in the polish txt-file. Same tonguebreaking stuff in the dropdown to the right of this box ("Metoda wstawiena..."). --Ordercrazy (talk) 07:54, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, would it be possible to change gallery order? The newest on the top? That is for the case you controll if all files uploaded well, you dont need spend time scrolling down. Thats also for a time you would like to use these images, you dont need to scroll down.--Juandev (talk) 06:53, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done. You can choose position in Settings -> Gallery. Yarl 21:10, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Great! Thank you for that!--Juandev (talk) 11:07, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GeoLocator

[edit]

Hi, I think that GeoLocator is better than the tool actually used in Vicugna. It is because you can fastly browse to the location. You type in state and village and in a while you are on the position. Than it allowes you to see satelite imaginery, which is much better to find a possition of photographer than simple map. Simple maps are usually too simple to determine, where you were staying. From satelite image you can determine it much better especially at the countriside.

And the last good thing is that you can add which way photographer made a shot. This information is valuable there, where are no buldings. So that is just what I know, I was not playing much with that open street tool.--Juandev (talk) 18:46, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Since version 1.14 there is Bing satelite imaginery, it should help. And I also think, that GeoLocator in better for geocoding, I'm using it very often :). I'll try to add heading soon. Yarl 21:19, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Automatic Update

[edit]

Hi, automatic update is a good thing, but in the case of Windows OS it would need further instructions or some extra programing. I have clicked to automatic update and system proceed. Files were downloaded but to hidden ~AppData/Roaming/~. I was not able to move this download to the position of v 1.13 and replace it. So I have downloaded V 1.14 directyl from web and deleted v 1.13--Juandev (talk) 10:41, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can you write path to vicuna.jar on your PC? Yarl 13:43, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is C:\Users\Juan\Desktop.--Juandev (talk) 14:29, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sessions compatability

[edit]
Fixed in version 1.15

Are sessions saved to the PC drive compatibile? I have saved session under v 1.13, now I would like it to add it to files using v 1.14, but it "Error while loading session file: Details: null". So I made a look to session.xml, but havent found nothing which may block programme to read it.--Juandev (talk) 10:50, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sessions should be compatibile. Please send me via mail content of XML file. Yarl 13:33, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
To be concrete, v. 1.14a was not able to upload sessions made by v.1.13, while v. 1.14b is able to upload session made by v.1.14b--Juandev (talk) 19:02, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done in v. 1.15. Yarl 12:36, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

About adding matter

[edit]

You developed a good tool. when compared to commonist. It is better. It is best for own works. But its is not useful for works upload from website and other sources. I t has no copy paste options. Typing of shorts words are easy. But typing of paragraphs from sources and big website links are not easy like me because we are low in typing speed. It is an huge process than normal uploading. Please add copy paste option in those fields. Please add left mouse button option with them. Please sir. Because I upload large amount of Files. Software are useful for me.--Donaldduck100 (talk) 09:48, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If I understand you correctly, you are missing something like a paste-button, right? Have you tried to use Ctrl+v instead? As far as I remember, that works just fine … Greetings, --El Grafo (talk) 10:13, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yeaph, Ctrl+v Paste, Ctrl+c Copy as well as Ctrl+x Cut - work all perfectly --Jwh (talk) 11:12, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sir please add buttons also--Donaldduck100 (talk) 13:40, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I'll try to add it in next version. Yarl 12:34, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Default folder

[edit]

Using Windows Vista. How to set a default folder for Upload files?--Juandev (talk) 22:36, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is no option like that, but can be in the future. Yarl 19:26, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Are you sure this is a Vicugna issue? I think its more like Windows issue, but I am asking here as I dont know how to set it and maybe someone can help. I know how to set this in Windows Explorer (you open Properties and you set "Target").--Juandev (talk) 11:26, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's doable to do it in Vicuna. Now it always loads default directory set by OS. Yarl 18:44, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ummm, and do you know, how to influence/set it in OS Windows Vista?--Juandev (talk) 10:24, 28 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Media from different sources

[edit]

I have a doubt sir. It gives option for only one source. What about media from different sources--Donaldduck100 (talk) 11:15, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Category redirects

[edit]

Can we do something with category redirect in drop down help. I mean sometimes, rather then subcategories you see a category redirect. I dont know, what might be the good way how manage that, so let me come up with the example.

I am looking there for cat:Roads in construction or something like than. But it shows me Road construction category and than nothing, because it is redirected to cat:Roadworks. But without opening that category on Wikimedia Commons, I can get subcategories.

--Juandev (talk) 11:36, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, it should be fixed... Yarl 18:42, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

German Translation

[edit]

I updated Commons:VicuñaUploader/messages de DE.properties to UTF8-Umlauts and added new entries from 1.16. --Ordercrazy (talk) 10:05, 28 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Category Browser

[edit]

Really: I hate the automatic category-browser. It acts crazy, leaves Buttons and Greyspaces in the middle of the userinterface and prevents me from typing more than one category by hand. Sometimes it seems to be stuck an indefinite loop, flickering a dislocated category-field somewhere on the screen, making vicuna totoally unresponsive. To me its more a hassle than a feature. Is there any chance to disable the automatic lookup by a config-switch? --Ordercrazy (talk) 10:17, 29 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Support for {{Artwork}}, {{Photograph}} , etc.

[edit]

Currently the program only supports {{Information}} template uploads. There is a great need for tools to allow batch uploads using other templates like {{Artwork}}, {{Photograph}}, {{Book}}, etc. Would it be possible to allow those and link it to the populating fields from external files. Maybe, that could be accomplished by creating some sort of input file (xml?) that would hold all the configuration data. Than the file can be cloned and modified to allow 3 templates above and possibly more. --Jarekt (talk) 04:42, 11 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

BabelBox

[edit]
This user uploads files with VicuñaUploader

Hi Yarl, I like your VicuñaUploader and made a Babelbox to promote it. I just saw on your user page that you made also one. Maybe it should be placed on the project page itself. Regards --Hsuepfle (talk) 21:28, 11 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thx for that! Iam using it.--Juandev (talk) 23:52, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is also template {{User VicunaUploader}}, you can use it too. Yarl 21:49, 9 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
