 Info Unlike other photos of Hallgrímskirkja which have now been restored, as the building itself is now in the public domain (since January 1, 2021, see also Category:Icelandic FOP cases/undeleted), I think that several of the photos in this request are not eligible for undeletion, as they don't focus on the architecture but on parts of the interior which might still be protected by copyright as works of other artists. Such as the organ - by Klais, and its design might by copyrightable - or the baptismal font (I don't know who designed that). But I will restore some now uncontroversial ones, such as File:Hallgrímskirkja Glocken.jpg (the bells in the tower; the issue was the then-copyrighted tower architecture). Pinging original nominator Themightyquill and processing admin Jameslwoodward for your information. Gestumblindi (talk) 01:23, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Gestumblindi. I appreciate that you put thought into this. Is there a chance the organ would be exempt from copyright based on its basic function being music not art? I thought there was some rule about that, but I don't quite recall. - Themightyquill (talk) 07:42, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Themightyquill:
Erfurt, St. Severi (as en example of an ornate casing which is now out of copyright, but could be copyrighted if it were a recent work)
The casing of pipe organs is often so elaborate that it's a piece of art in itself and far exceeds the mere function of providing a case for an instrument, here's an example - but as this casing is from 1714 (housing a newer, 1930 organ), it's of course out of copyright. Now, the casing of the organ of Hallgrímskirkja is much more modern, but striking and original in its own way. The organ was built late (Hallgrímskirkja for a long time had no large main organ), in 1992. In its uniqueness it is a popular subject for photographers - which makes me think it may be unique enough to have copyright protection. But I'm not totally sure. So, personally, I'm going for a compromise: There are several images of this organ on Commons, I will not actively file deletion requests for these, as I'm not sure enough. But I will also not restore deleted images. Gestumblindi (talk) 10:53, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Thuresson: Some of the pictures of the organ I deliberately excluded from undeleting for the reasons given above have now been restored by you. So you think the organ's casing is not copyrightable? I'm not totally sure myself, but your reasoning would be interesting to know. Gestumblindi (talk) 22:03, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
These photo were requested for undeletion at Commons:Undeletion requests/Archive/2021-02#Hallgrimskirkja files. The basic argument was that the interior is not copyrighted and nobody put forth any arguments against undeletion. Thuresson (talk) 20:39, 9 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Thuresson: That undeletion request was only referring to the work of architect Guðjón Samúelsson (that is, the architecture of the church) becoming PD, which is correct, but apparently the question of possible copyright for the organ, which has nothing to do with Guðjón Samúelsson's work, wasn't a topic there. I have no really strong opinion on the copyright status of that casing, but personally, I would have been more cautious. Gestumblindi (talk) 23:52, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
