Was ist Wiki Loves Monuments?
This is the first time Qatar participates in Wiki Loves Monuments competition!
Wiki Loves Monuments is a global photo contest that started in the Netherlands in 2010, then expanded to European-wide competition in 2011, and finally became global in 2012 with participating countries from all over the world. This year, 2021, we have decided to join the competition for the first time in Qatar. Wiki Loves Monuments is organized in Qatar by Qatar National Library with the support of Qatar Museums and Qatar Photographic Society.

Al Jumail village on the northwest coast of Qatar is the small traditional but ruined village of Al Jumail. It was originally inhabited by the Al Kubaisi tribe also known as fisherman's village.

How can you participate?
1- Find monuments
Look at the official lists of monuments provided below and choose the ones you would like to take pictures of.
2- Take photos
Take pictures of the monuments. Take as many pictures as possible to get a good picture!
3- Upload and tag your photos
Upload your photos to Wikimedia Commons from 1st of October till 31st of October, 2021 (make sure you have an account). In the upload form, at "Describe" step, tag your photo with correct Monument ID. Use the "Heritage Area Number" (HAR....) from the official list of monuments (links above).
Rules and regulations
The basic rules for this contest are as follows:
- Participant must be a resident or citizen of Qatar.
- Take a photo of any of the monuments listed under the list of monuments in Qatar (please check the list above).
- To upload a photo, participant will have to provide photo authorship information and agree for Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 4.0 license to allow further re-use of the photo. Photos will be used in Wikipedia articles, but others may use them as well, under the terms of this CC license.
- Once the photos are ready participant can then upload them to Wikimedia Commons between the 1st and 31st October of 2021, any pictures uploaded after 31st of October will not be eligible for the competition.
- The photographs must have been taken and uploaded by the participants themselves.
- Participant must register on Wikimedia Commons, or log into their account if they already have one to upload the photos.
- The monument identifier (which is the HAR column in the monuments list) must be provided with the uploaded photo (this can be find the in the list of monuments linked above) to help identify the monument in the picture.
- Each participant can upload up to 10 images for participation in the competition.
- 10 winners will be chosen for the local competition in Qatar.
- These 10 winners (photos) will automatically be included in the global competition for a chance to win the international "Wiki Loves Monuments" competition.
Juries & Organizers
This competition is a collaboration of Qatar National Library, Qatar Museums and Qatar Photographic Society. Juries for the competition will be representatives from each organization. For any inquiries please contact mailto:asmaaalkuwari@qnl.qa.
The Qatar Photographic Society is offering an online training workshop on the techniques of photography in the aspect of landscape photography and architectural photography for those wishing to participate in the competition on 13th October 2021 - from 4 PM till 6 PM On Microsoft Teams (Free). Qatar Photographic Society is also offering 3 field trips to three different sites that are registered as a landmark and historical heritage in the country:
First day: 14 / October / 2021 Thursday: from two o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening Location: Al-Ruwais / Al-Jameel / Al-Thaqab Station
Second day: 21 / October / 2021 Thursday: from two o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening Location: Qatar National Museum
Third day: 28 / October / 2021 Thursday: from two o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening Location: Barzan Towers

Note: Registration for the trip is 50 Qatari riyals for the participant who wishes to be part of the trips (not mandatory for participation in the competition), which will be collected on the day of the trip. The selection of the winning photos would be based on:
- Creativity
- Originality
- Quality
- Focus- Exposure
- Composition
Prizes
For the local competition in Qatar, there will be 10 winning photographs chosen. Prizes will be souvenirs given by Qatar National Library, and the top 10 winners will also be eligible to participate and get a chance to win the international competition.
